Noway has been playing it in German 2nd Diff playoffs which he won their AD playes varus too so it's a good flex for them. The low level is because you can't play side lanes that well especially if you don't have ult so you will be a little under leveled. force of nature is good against varus forces voidstaff 4th and delays the power spike against tanks a little bit.
After playing this occasionally for several seasons now, let me tell you very simple counter to this pick, STACK TENACITY. Buy merc's and take at least one tenacity rune and the Varus you are versing, will be so annoyed. With enough tenacity you will cripple his R so much, AP Varus is relying on R to stack Blight and also to charge Q. You will be able to dodge Q and also he will be forced to AA to full stack Blight, meaning he will be forced to close the distance.

Buying Merc's instead of Ionians or Sorcs is the only difference here in damage and even that is such a tiny difference. Arguably you don't even loose the damage against Varus, because you are CCed for less amount of time, thus you can close the gap faster. The second potential loss of damage is going Legend: Tenacity instead of Alacrity and thats just not even worth mentioning. And going Unflinching in case you go Resolve runes is just no brainer. Lets say you have Legend: Tenacity and Merc's, that adds up to 51% tenacity reduction. Meaning Varus R roots you for ~1s instead of 2s. His Q channel is 1.25 seconds to max range&dmg, so he won't even be able to fully charge his Q before you will be able to move. On top of that it takes 1.5s to get 3 stacks of Bligh on you with R, so he won't even get full damage there. Now tell me if its worth to loose dmg from Sorcs/Ionians & Legend: Alacrity, while AP Varus will be doing so much less damage :)

Main issue here is that after getting out of root, many many champs can dash, zhonyas, flash and basically dodging his charged Q after ultimate is like 3/4 of his dmg. If you are rooted you just stand there and wait for him to hit you. And I want to mention again, that Varus won't have full Blight stacks against tenacity opponent just with R (he must AA at least once). With 400AP each stack is 15% of your maximum health so he will loose at least the stack if he doesn't come up close to AA range.

With all that mr, i still got 90% of my hp removed with Varus ult+e+2AA+q. I litterally got blown up before getting out of his ult.

If you are full ap (witha zhonya or something) then you will 1 shot them lvl 18 unless they build heavy MR. Especially if you do 3 stack into ult (ult procs stacks too) But yeah I exclusively play Varus in his AP playstyle however i usually adc with a nashors rush and DH.
Why is that first back for caps is darkseal and refillable, and xerath is darkseak and book? But they both have an assist and caps had more cs, my thought is that caps is sitting on like 300 gold or so but then its so inefficient
I hate how people say it was "AP Corki". It was never AP Corki. It was always AD. He just deals magic damage, but scales with AD, thus the Magic Pen boots and Ludens for the mythic that provides tons of MPen. Everything else was AD.

Ive playing ap varus everytime I can get him in aram for years. Manamune Ludens then magic pen stack with arcane comet. Build horizon focus at some point as well. R into w q one shots tanks.
@@dane-uk Nashor guinsoo actually sucks, it's not an onhit varus so you don't have to actually weave a lot of autos to kill and even if you do rift maker Nashor outperform this build with actual sustain.

not a varus main here but w max seems unefficent as the cd is hella long so you wont be using it nearly as much as you are with q, and q is ur highest source of dmg from the looks of things and would most likely be scaling better with ap and levels.
if u level W first, what your getting per level is extra on hit damage and a measly 1% max hp damage per stack. You level Q because base damage and AD ratio scale up better. Also the missing hp damage from W active scales with level.
Q max is better early both in damage, and even more importantly, waveclear. if u maxed w ur waveclear would be nonexistent which is detrimental for wave control

But anyways, it's troll to be picking this into mages. Any mid laner with good spacing and ranged cc will make you go 0/5 because junglers exist (any lpl mid enjoyers out there?). But the matchup into melees is almost unplayable for them lol.

I feel like AP Varus is fair, unlike AP Zeri and Corki because it’s long-range poke on a champ that doesn’t have any mobility. Obviously this is why we never see Xerath in pro play when you’d think he’d be a strong meta pick due to his similarity to Corki and AP Zeri

AP varus was (re-)popularized by EUW midlaner Noway. He was also the inspiration for caps to pick it up.
He played that in high Challenger but he use different runes then Caps

rift is not for the healing, its for the extra %health damage. with riftmaker once you have ~600 ap you outdamage the ludens build

Riftmaker is used for the sustain because of the omnivamp and also true damage to help in finishing off kills
