The brother's GF actually didn't know how to do mash potatoes as the brother dump the responsibility on her because he wanted to feel part of the family. The GF panik because she forgot the recipe and find one online with raisins and thought it was "fine", and not even the brother knew it , but try to play along. In the end even the GF knew the mash potato salad was a mess too and even the brother couldn't hide it when confront by OP and win a verbal smack by OP for dump all the responsibility on his GF too. In the end OP and the GF end up bonding from this situation and the brother learn the lesson too, even OP offer herself to teach the GF how to do the mash potato salad as well, this time without raisins.

For my wedding I had so many friends and family donate (at their offer, not me asking) their time and skills to do the cake, bridesmaids dresses, decorating, flowers, officiate, music, hair, makeup in lieu of a present. We didn’t need presents so it was a perfect solution. Never expect free/reduced services, but be thankful when someone does offer it
Last story: As a sister, wife and mom: a word of advice. Always let the family know off your bringing someone. And always pre-arrange the fish they are bringing, preferably a bottle of wine, a bunch of flowers or a cake. (I know flowers aren't edible but they are always enjoyed.)

In the wedding dress story OP is not the jerk. Making a wedding dress can be very difficult. Plus, even if OP made that their wedding gift for their friend, there's a good chance that they might try to guilt trip OP into giving more. Also, OP was actually being very generous making the dress cost 1/4th of what it should be if it came from another person with the same job and skill level.

I consider myself a sociopath. I have done many horrible spiteful things to people in the past, people who tried to thwart me and ruin my day/life. Best example: laundry day, piles of clothes everywhere. Trying to sort and also throw away clothes we don't need anymore to lessen the load. A friend comes over and notices the bottle of bleach near the door which was for the laundry. Nothing said but it was deduced it was her because she was the only visitor that day - few days later CPS visits, they received a complaint about harmful chemicals being near children. CPS are bad and very annoying people that inconvenience your life. So I cut that friend's breaklines. She has an accident and becomes a paraplegic. The end.

I personally would have dug a huge pit under the area where the blankets were, filling that with the garbage and glass and then covering it up with a blanket. I’m an artist and I Used to have a friend that constantly demanded that I create art for her and her friends for free all the time. She would also call to get me to talk to my estranged brother, because he was an electrician, and she constantly wanted free services. Obviously we are not friends anymore. Not the jerk!!!

In response to the first jerk. Nope they were justified. I'd have done the same. I know in my heart I've done something similar but can't quite remember what. Only ones I remember clearly is 2 flats different times different flat mates. I bought a lovely sofa bed then I discovered I was going to be moving abroad so asked my flat mate if he would buy it as I couldn't take it with me. For months I waited for his payment after reminding him. Day of moving, still no money. So to stop him getting an expensive free sofa bed, I drenched it in cooking oil lol and another flat with a shared garden I asked the neighbors if they would buy the new garden furniture. Yeah sure. When they knew I was moving that's when the noise started constant music etc keeping me awake, seeing them sitting on my furniture smoking etc. Instead of asking again I went out one evening and again covered all cushions and seats in greasy cooking oil. Am I the jerk for getting annoyed with people taking the piss out of me?

The last story... Thanksgiving meals are about traditions. Things passed down from generation to generation. Recipes from generation to generation. My mother-in-law always brought the Green Jell-O Thing, they all loved it, and nobody else knew how to make it, she'd been making it since WWII. I make the Green Bean Casserole. We bring home empty dishes for the things we bring. Her sister made a green bean casserole one year, my dish was empty, she was the only one that ate hers... even her husband ate mine. Made me happy mine is exceptional, and everyone had multiple servings of mine. She had an attitude all day. I didn't have her phone number, and told my mother-in-law to tell her that's what I was bringing, so I don't know why she made one, and so cheaply either. My mother-in-law also brought her sweet potato casserole. If you ask people to bring food with them, you need to coordinate what all is being brought over. Otherwise you could end up with multiples of the same thing. The brother bringing a girlfriend unannounced, and knowing his sister makes the mashed potatoes was stupid on his part, he's a jerk. Especially since apparently he's never tasted the girlfriend's mashed potatoes to know they aren't very good. Always call days ahead when inviting new people to family gatherings and holidays. And ask what they need you to bring with you. They might only need a bag of ice in a cooler. 👵☮️🖖

Oh my god. The mashed potato situation. That exact shit has happened to me but with deviled eggs, the dish I always did for like 20+ years. I'm still bitter about it years later. I just continued bringing my own for several years and only ate mine, my cousin made a ton and hardly anyone ate hers, pretty much just her husband whose idea it was in the first place because he didn't like mine (ie doesn't actually like deviled eggs as a dish). Eventually she stopped bringing them. Though everyone to this day are too chickenshit to tell her how terrible hers were and deluded her into somehow believing they weren't god awful. Like they were made with sugar and mayo as essentially the only ingredients, they were essentially a desert rather than a savory dish. No hot sauce, no onion of any kind, no mustard, no salt or pepper, not even paprika on top - no, she used chili powder on top. They were utterly irredeemable.
2nd story is the reason why my mother quit from the tailor made business as 3 relatives (2 of her sisters and an aunt) abuse of that in the past too. The last thing she did was a dress for my 1st sister and that's about it. After that she didn't take anything else at all and didn't want to do it. Even with 2 sewing machines (an old Singer and a new lightway all purpose Singer), she doesn't want anything to do and now days she only use them for repair some old clothes and repropouse some old ones too or any other fix is need in mine, her , my dad or my sister's clothes and underwears too. Even our dogs too when it came to repair their dog's sweaters.

Another thing I'd do is fill parts of it with saltwater so the infections and cuts hurt even worse. (kinda like the traps used in the Vietnam war, but with garbage and saltwater.)

I’m an artist and I Used to have a friend that constantly demanded that I create art for her and her friends for free all the time. When i was little i was bullied by 2 kids older than me, one day i went to the beach and had prepared a concrete sand castle, when it came time for them to bully me the concrete castle was covered in sand, and i made 2 more small toweres like it to make it look like it wasnt a trap, all i can say is they didint bully me after that, because they could not walk

In response to the first jerk. Nope they were justified. I'd have done the same. I know in my heart I've done something similar but can't quite remember what. Only ones I remember clearly is 2 flats different times different flat mates. I bought a lovely sofa bed then I discovered I was going to be moving abroad so asked my flat mate if he would buy it as I couldn't take it with me. For months I waited for his payment after reminding him. Day of moving, still no money. So to stop him getting an expensive free sofa bed, I drenched it in cooking oil lol and another flat with a shared garden I asked the neighbors if they would buy the new garden furniture. Yeah sure. When they knew I was moving that's when the noise started constant music etc keeping me awake, seeing them sitting on my furniture smoking etc. Instead of asking again I went out one evening and again covered all cushions and seats in greasy cooking oil. Am I the jerk for getting annoyed with people taking the piss out of me?
OMG As funny as that is, that is probably beyond where it should have gone... I hope the cow didn't get too sick from the filth and hopefully her and her boys learned their lesson...
The last story... Thanksgiving meals are about traditions. Things passed down from generation to generation. Recipes from generation to generation. My mother-in-law always brought the Green Jell-O Thing, they all loved it, and nobody else knew how to make it, she'd been making it since WWII. I make the Green Bean Casserole. We bring home empty dishes for the things we bring. Her sister made a green bean casserole one year, my dish was empty, she was the only one that ate hers... even her husband ate mine. Made me happy mine is exceptional, and everyone had multiple servings of mine. She had an attitude all day. I didn't have her phone number, and told my mother-in-law to tell her that's what I was bringing, so I don't know why she made one, and so cheaply either. My mother-in-law also brought her sweet potato casserole.
If you ask people to bring food with them, you need to coordinate what all is being brought over. Otherwise you could end up with multiples of the same thing. The brother bringing a girlfriend unannounced, and knowing his sister makes the mashed potatoes was stupid on his part, he's a jerk. Especially since apparently he's never tasted the girlfriend's mashed potatoes to know they aren't very good. Always call days ahead when inviting new people to family gatherings and holidays. And ask what they need you to bring with you. They might only need a bag of ice in a cooler.

Oh my god. The mashed potato situation. That exact shit has happened to me but with deviled eggs, the dish I always did for like 20+ years. I'm still bitter about it years later. I just continued bringing my own for several years and only ate mine, my cousin made a ton and hardly anyone ate hers, pretty much just her husband whose idea it was in the first place because he didn't like mine (ie doesn't actually like deviled eggs as a dish). Eventually she stopped bringing them. Though everyone to this day are too chickenshit to tell her how terrible hers were and deluded her into somehow believing they weren't god awful. Like they were made with sugar and mayo as essentially the only ingredients, they were essentially a desert rather than a savory dish. No hot sauce, no onion of any kind, no mustard, no salt or pepper, not even paprika on top - no, she used chili powder on top. They were utterly irredeemable.

2nd story is the reason why my mother quit from the tailor made business as 3 relatives (2 of her sisters and an aunt) abuse of that in the past too. The last thing she did was a dress for my 1st sister and that's about it. After that she didn't take anything else at all and didn't want to do it. Even with 2 sewing machines (an old Singer and a new lightway all purpose Singer), she doesn't want anything to do and now days she only use them for repair some old clothes and repropouse some old ones too or any other fix is need in mine, her , my dad or my sister's clothes and underwears too. Even our dogs too when it came to repair their dog's sweaters.
