    Beautiful collections - my favourites are Schmincke, Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton... I have a 1/2 pan set of 24 Sennelier watercolours in a wooden box and I hardly use it as the half pans have such a small surface area that make it very awkward to get good paint coverage on my brush (for the most part the smallest brush I use is a size 8) without going over and over the pan & fear of ruining my brush & so after that experience it put me off ½ pans forever & I’m just amazed that people use them - or maybe people who use small brushes & paint small pictures.... other than that I also found them to be a ‘weak’ paint, not very vibrant and so they are probably perfect for glazing... please tell me as I’m really curious to know, how often do you get to use ALL these paints? I too looooove beautiful quality watercolour supplies and have to force myself to NOT by them for fear I’ll NEVER get good use out of them & then I’ll feel overwhelmed that I should use them so they are not wasted... I’m lucky if I paint every 2nd day & rarely do I finish a painting in one sitting or one day, minimum size painting I do is a ¼ sheet of watercolour paper - always doing a value study before hand, it all takes me a long time to prepare & work out composition before I actually start on the finished painting so in all probability I’ll have enough paints, kolinsky sable brushes and beautiful hand made brass palettes to last a lifetime... using them all is an absolute joy and I hope that I NEVER tire of watercolour painting as I’d hate for all my beautiful supplies to be sitting idle and unloved....

      It's so interesting to hear your work process! I probably should do more value studies but I tend to just dive right on in and make it up as I go along, haha! I am usually fine with half pans; for bigger brushes they can be pretty awkward but otherwise most of the time they're ok. I haven't wrecked a brush yet, though I totally get the risk especially with fine animal hair ones! I really do have more paints than I could ever use but I do my best to paint with them all and I like having a variety to choose from, depending on my mood. I also go through phases with paints. Thank you for watching my video and posting your thoughtful comment. ❤️

    I’ve sort of done the same thing. I’ve slowed down on my watercolor paint buying because I’m starting to wonder if I can ever use them all. Unfortunately I’ve just substituted with other art supplies. So that’s a fail. 😂

    That could sound wrong... but luckily....ykwim! 😂😂😂😂
    But that’s ok: I have my Cotman, Pretty Excellent, Reeves, Mungyo, Kmart/Anko and Mont Marte cheapie paints....and I was happy til I saw this video, haha......but DANG, all those DS tubes look delicious!

    Thank you for this fantastic review of your choices of watercolour paints. Like you, Sennellier is my first choice of make. Just love the shiny honey finish on them in my pans. I began with one set of 12 tubes in a tin, then bought a travel set in a plastic palette. This is hard to use as the pull out trays are rather flimsy. So I bought other field boxes and filled them with Sennellier paints in half pans. Recently, I have bought silver and brass boxes on ebay and packed them with whole pans loaded with Sennellier paints, to take on holiday or to art classes. Whole pans are easier on your brushes. I have tried other brands but always come back to Sennellier for their instant visual appeal, as you open up your palette and their end result in paintings. Just love them. Kathy xx

My fav brand is Daniel Smith, and I also use Winsor & Newton Pro, M Graham and have a few Sennelier. Haven't really tried Schmincke as they're very expensive in the States, so would like to learn more about them. Thanks for sharing your collection!

    I am guessing that the D.S. interference and cytochrome paints might work best layered over a traditional wash to really see the paint on white paper. I have found Finetec metallic watercolors,to be the most affordable and high quality source of metallic paint. Sorry for spelling weirdness, the AI changes my spellings often.

    So which is your go to palette? I love the DS amythest too as well as you have to try the DS Apatite genuine if you like granulation greens. I used it in my Feybruary day 9 challenge creature..the paint is just so lovely. Seeing the Blood stone on your card makes me want to try that and sleeping beauty as well. I keep my DS in one of the mijello air tight plastic palettes and I do not seem to have the problem with the Rhondonite that is another color I use a lot. I have a dot card and I am trying not to buy any more DS until I swatch the colors and know I will love it. But they are an addictive paint brand. I have a travel set of sennelier paints I have not tried yet that I received at christmas again the downfall of having so many. I trust i will love them since they are have honey like my M graham. I love the huge box of the sennelier tubes you purchased. Lovely. Going to watch your m graham video to see what you think of those.

      Thank you so much for all of your wonderful comments! I woke up to them and I'm reading through them all now. It's hard to say which is my go to palette as it changes a lot, but right now I've been using the Sennelier boxes a lot, and I painted the Eiffel Tower and the Disney Castle with them. There has been no travel or going out to sketch at all lately, so everything is sitting neglected in my studio staring at me accusingly. Normally I would quite often take out my sets of Holbein and Art Spectrum, and I also was using that much larger travel box with a mix of DS and Schmincke. Ah, memories..... Now of course I have Qor and M Graham which haven't had an opportunity to go outside at all, doh!

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  3 года назад +2

      Ok somehow it didn't show me your comment so I am seeing this six months later, eek! In answer to your question, the plastic insert does not have holes big enough to put in a half pan, so you'd need to squeeze the paint directly into the cavity. Or take out the plastic insert and put the half pans into the tin itself. Sorry this is so late but I hope it helps!

  • @anjakritzelkram5544
    @anjakritzelkram5544 4 года назад +5

    Ah, all the good stuff 😍
    I am an official Horadamoholic, they are my favourites. Luckily I am from Germany so I can get my greedy hands on all of their special edition sets. I like the way they mix, it is easy to get the desired color, compared to Daniel Smith or Sennelier.
    I like Qor for their flow and their modern approach on the subject and Daniel Smith has some unusual colors, I love the amethyst too, have some tubes and some of their pans as well.
    I managed to get the Sennelier tubes „used“ so I got the full range for a good price and I own some pan sets including the 48 set. But I prefer poured pans and unfortunately the tube paints stay quite sticky. Also I don‘t like the fact that the Sennelier pans and tubes often provide different shades for the same color.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  4 года назад

      I can respect that! I have to agree that Schmincke do some really beautiful poured pans, nicer than most other companies. Really they're all lovely paints and it's so hard to rank them. Just for whatever reason I took to Sennelier and it's not even really something I can explain other than they bring me joy, lol! I imagine if I lived in Germany I would have bought the entire wooden box of Horadam 5ml tubes instead of or as well as Sennelier, haha. 😁

    • @anjakritzelkram5544
      @anjakritzelkram5544 4 года назад

      😊 Yeah, it is most important to enjoy the process of painting and the performance of your materials.
      So far, I only got some small limited edition sets from Schmincke like the one in the leather case. This year they already came up with several sets. Out of the 139 colors I am missing only around 20.
      I only bought one bigger set with 54 half pans which only came in cardboard. While the wooden box sets look very impressive it is so much money to spend at once and I am not a big fan of wooden boxes anyway, especially given my workspace is rather small.
      I found it quite complicated to get a good use of such big sets anyway. My 98 Sennelier pans used to sit in one tin from one of Senneliers travel set. I now moved them to two of this smaller tins you find from Sennelier and Jacksons (those with a plastic insert ) and hope this helps me to use them more often.
