Rod Strickland "Bronx Jelly" Unblockable Lay Up Package

  • You didn't think I was done, did you? Can't forget the Bronx's own Rod Strickland, one of the best point guard finishers around the rim, especially for a smaller below the rim type player. Also a BIG influence on Kyrie Irving. Although seldom mentioned today as one the NBA's best guards, those who played with him (like Shaq) have nothing but respect for his game.
    I like to think of Rod Strickland as the bridge between the old generation of players (Erving, Dr Jay, Jordan) known for their lay up ability and the new players (Drose, Kyrie, etc....). This was supposed to be part of the "Jelly 3" highlight mix from a few months ago, but as you know that video would've been too long. It fits better as a separate upload.

    To me, the craziest thing about Strickland's game is that he didn't have a 3-point shot, wasn't great from 2-point long distance, and he wasn't that fast, but DAMN he just got to the rim almost at will. It's hard to get to the rim when defenders don't have to worry about the outside shot, but Strickland did it anyway.

    DePaul played Louisville once while "Strick" was still there and had one of the best college games I've seen. He put this move on Pervis Ellison from Louisville that I don't know how he got off...RS went up for a shot down on the right block but Pervis jumped up to block it....RS double clutched, brought the ball down on his left side avoiding Ellison's block and somehow shot the ball with his left hand...Awesome enough for me to remember that play near 40 years later!

    Rod Strickland was nice in H.S. he and my classmate Dwayne "Pearl" Washington went head to head once I believe it was a playoff game which was much anticipated because they both were All-Americans and it didn't disappoint, it was a sizzler. Pearl was a flashy shake & bake showman who could get you out your seat and Rod Strickland went toe to toe with him. He wasn't flashy but did everything Pearl could do, quietly and very quick. I don't remember who won the game but they both had over 30 I believe. I was a fan of Rod Strickland's ever since and was pissed with the Knicks traded him and kept that slow footed cornball Mark Jackson. Strickland was NBA fast forward, he was quick, drove to the basket strong, was a pass first point and played aggressive defense and typical Knicks to make the wrong choice every time which is another topic all together.

    What I notice is on all his drives he takes off from the same distance every time. Being a former ball player (48), I understand the meaning of this. He always had you were he wanted you! An that's the description of someone you would call nice! An Rod was most definitely nice! But I'm from The Bronx! Tracey Towers stand up!!!!

    • @trevorcunningham8687
      @trevorcunningham8687 4 года назад +2

      @risingStar I appreciate your honesty so I'll give it to you str8! Follow me. It's all about knowing an believing in what you can do. He knew that if he was able to get to a certain spot he could do alot of things to a defense. He couldn't jump from where Jordan did an be successful, it would get blocked everytime. But if he could lull a defender into a certain spot he knew he had an array of moves to get to the basket as well as using the rim to shed off would be shit blockers. An as evidenced he was able to make a living by putting defenders in a certain spot an then proceeding to be very disrespectful with it. If you need to know anything else let me know.

    • @trevorcunningham8687
      @trevorcunningham8687 4 года назад +4

      @risingStar the jordan jumping was just an example of what Rod couldn't do. But he knew where he could jump from an be successful. That's why his take off seems to always be from the same spot. He was able to put defenders in a certain spot due to his tremendous dribbling abilities an deception with his handle. If you want to put a spin on the ball known as English, you need to find a court an practice. Glad to help if you need anymore info.

    • @Xhadowgdm
      @Xhadowgdm 4 года назад +3

      His jump was more about his the distance from the ring plus his hang time. This gave him a couple of advantages. 1) Once another player made contact with him he can most often get the foul. 2) His hang time gave him more time to modify his layup to counter what the defender was doing. 3) Because he is fully utilizing his hang time as part of his layup, he has more opportunities in terms of when and where to take his shot - early, mid or late into his jump. 4) Jumping from further away give him a better view of where his potential challengers are and what they’re going to do so he can make his counter that half second early which is what gave him the edge. 5) jumping early puts the defenders on their heels making them react to him and making them more concerned about fouling him therefore weakening their defensive posture. 6) jumping early also improved his spatial awareness in terms of him being more accurate about his body position in mid air in relation to the backboard. Once he knows where the glass is he can make the shot using his ball spin against the glass.

    What sucks about that era is it was hard to see these guys play. Like the only times I saw the Bullets was when they faced the Bulls on WGN or the 1st rd of the playoffs when Calbert Cheaney guarded MJ. I was a big fan of Cheaney being from Indiana, but not close enough to Indy to get Pacers games.

      Idiot Whisperer once again MJ doesn’t rep NY, barely knows shit from NY, wasn’t raised in NY. He was raised in Carolina that’s what he reps. Any reg person that was born in NY but raised somewhere else and y’all would be on their ass for trying to rep NY. And it’s kinda funny, NYers always get on ppl for repping NY when they’re not from the city but that goes out the window for Dr J tho😂
