Yes, it is rare for a company to allow a member to choose the other members. I think that adds to the uniqueness of SKZ. Bang Chan obviously saw something in the members he chose and look where they all are now! It was a huge responsibility and he still takes it deeply seriously. After 7 long years as a trainee, he almost gave up at times and withdrew when others debuted before him to protect himself emotionally. He has said before that his members saved him, literally, and he would do anything for them. I can't recall if you listened to Social Path but if you pay attention to the lyrics, they are about his long trainee journey through to debut, to get where they are now. It starts with, "Gave up my youth for my future...." remembering he left Australia at 13 to pursue his dream yet he continues, "...I just want to Rise up stronger....I know it's gon' be lonely 'Cause everyone keeps turning me down.....You only get to live one life, I know I'm ready, Take that chance no matter what thеy tell me. I cannot explain this feeling, Yеah, this path was meant to be my dream. Look back, the ashes prove my Passion always burns eternally, No regrets, I love this feeling, Down on this road, call it the Social Path."

Hello Terrence, I have been enjoying your journey into SKZ so far. Since you have been so interested, I have found some tidbits to add on to your questions you asked, from the Stayville library for non and babyStay. Thank you to Stay @jadefrog:
⭐4th gen means 4th generation of K-Pop. So older groups like Shinee, Super Junior, Wonder Girls and Girls Generation are 2nd gen, BTS & Blackpink are 3rd gen, Stray Kids is the beginning of 4th gen, and now we've got some 5th gen coming out.
⭐About the Rachas: The members have specialties inside the group. The producing group, 3Racha, was a separate group to begin with, the first 3 members of Stray Kids, they write & produce almost all the group's tracks. They still release 3Racha tracks and perform sometimes as a separate unit, with a harder, more rap based less pop sound. They named themselves to rhyme with the hot sauce sriracha, because there are three of them, and their music is spicy. Danceracha are the three members most involved in dancing, Lee Know, Hyunjin and Felix. They spend a lot of time together rehearsing and working on dances, have posted dance videos and done lives together as a group, so STAY (Stray kids fans) started calling them Danceracha to fit in with 3Racha. And then came Vocalracha because no one wanted Seungmin & I.N to be left out and they also function as a small unit, doing lots of covers and focusing a lot on their vocals.
⭐ In K-Pop groups, Leader is a specific position. It doesn't necessarily mean the member who is "best" at singing/rap/dance or whatever. It is a position given to a very responsible member who is the best at being in charge. The leader is the member who is best at getting everyone working together, who everyone respects and listens to, who is good at working with the company, things like that. The leader needs to be good enough at singing, rapping or dancing to have the other members respect. The members need to trust that the leader knows what they're talking about, but sometimes the leader is not the best at any of those things, just the best at actually leading. Chan is a wonderful vocalist, a good rapper & a fine dancer, he's a genius producer/writer and an awesome performer. He is also a natural leader, he just easily takes charge in any situation, he always makes sure his members are safe and well-treated, and he deals well with support staff and with official company business. He also has a vision of where he wants this group to go and the type of group he wants them to be, and he takes in input so it is not just his vision, but the vision of all the members.
⭐ Often the leader is the oldest member of the group, but not always. In Korea, age is very important, younger people are supposed to look up to older ones, even a newer group is supposed to respect a group that has been around longer. Because age is so important in Korean culture, most guides go through members from oldest to youngest, following Korean norms. So Chan is the oldest and is listed first, and IN is the youngest listed last. It means you don't have to worry about offending someone by trying to list in order of who's "best" or "most popular", you just go oldest to youngest. If the leader is not the oldest member, they will be listed according to their age, not their position.
⭐ They have specific words for the various age relationships, not just between people but also between groups. So a group that debuted more recently is a younger group and has to defer to and show respect for an older group, and an older group is supposed to show care and kindness to a younger group. If you watch the competition show Kingdom: Legendary War, you need to understand this, because it is makes a big difference to how the contestants treat one another.
⭐ Kingdom: LW is a competition show where 6 groups compete. The performances are insanely good. The 6 groups, oldest to youngest, are: BTOB, IKON, Sf9, The Boyz, Stray Kids & Ateez. Their is an incredible section where the 6 groups join together into 2 supergroups, which they called "It's One" and "Mayfly". Stray Kids was in Mayfly with BTOB and Ateez, and those performances are amazing. The only problem with reacting to Kingdom is that it was produced by Korean network MNET, which is really nasty about blocking reaction videos made on its content. So if you want to react to Kingdom, you might want to do things to mess up the visuals of the video you are reacting to, like putting a logo on top of the video image, or reversing it, etc.
✴ I will see if I locate the K-Pop generation year listing info (its around here somewhere). Looking forward to your Part 2 for this guide, got my popcorn at the ready..

Well explained. The importance of age / seniority clarifies a lot for those newer to K-pop, as you rightly say.

Definitely my favorite IU drama. I have My Mister as a top 5 drama that I have seen so far. The emotions portrayed in this drama are next to none. It still amazes me how you can have such a heartwarming relationship between two leads who are not physically attracted to each other, but genuinely want the best for each other. 10/10
