Those throws are awesome, we have a few. It’s my go to sleep system in the summer. In a tent or our camper van. Great job on the modifications you made
I did the same thing but added a second blanket to double the thickness. I have used it in my sleeping system down to about 35 degrees. I just used a snap at the top to tuck behind my head.
Thanks a ton! Love your videos :-) I bought one of these lightweight cheap quilts a couple of days ago, and inspired by you, delved into a little project. I was a bit lazy, and just added 3 loops in the bottom (after lengthening and forming a foot box) for an elastic (3 elastics) and I used some material to close about a foot of the foot box - leaving it permanently closed... I came back from buying supplies and finished in a about 3 or 4 hours. (I don't sew much, so I consider this good timing). I didn't have a lot of time to play or optimize, because I go on a little hike starting in 2 days (Florida Trail). A huge thanks to you!!!
That's so cool, sounds like you made some awesome modifications! I hear the Florida trail is great and long!) I hope to hike some of it someday. Enjoy the trip.
Nothing major as far as mods. The main part was all you!! This next hike will determine if I can call myself a section hiker or not... I'm aiming to go further than I've ever gone (We are only talking 70 to 85 miles). Very open. Some woods & lots of farmland, roads and following canals. Very different than the AT. I'll be following your adventures. Lots of luck & have a ton of fun! Again, many thanks. Ari.
WOW! Really well-done DIY video! I started following your channel a month ago, but I'm following a few thruhikers and it's difficult to have time to look at their beginning the hike videos. I'm glad I came across this (or maybe I should thank RUclips's algorithms for suggesting this video) as you explain things so well! I think I'll start watching your hike prep videos!
Awesome. I have just ordered several sets of the Costco throws. They were on sale for Black Friday. I had planned something similar and your video will be a great help to explain to my seamstress . I plan to use mine to slip over my down bag in extreme cold weather or use as a quilt for warm weather. Thnks for sharing your journey.
Super DIY! Great job and I would love to take sewing classes from you. Many "cottage" stores started with DIY ideas such as yours. Happy trails to you!
Hi. I have the quilt in the same color. Because the baffles are sewn through the quilt is only ever good for fairly warm nights, but to add some warmth I've used a seam ripper and removed the lengthwise seams so now it's width-wise channels of down rather than squares. This way there are less cold spots where it's sewn through and I can shake the down to the center and have more loft over me with the edges on either side tucked under me. The underneath warmth coming from the pad. My pad insulated. This makes sense because if the down were evenly distributed and tucked underneath a person that compressed down will offer little insulation so it may as well be atop and a bit warmer. Another idea would be to remove the seams so that the channels run the length of the quilt to your toe box, then take down from the outer channels and put an even amount in the channels that would provide the most insulation over a person. Then create the channels going width-wise over the toe box. To better envision this look up enlightened equipment revelation or enigma quilt. In any case this does provide some added warmth but will always be a summer quilt due to the remaining sewn through seams and quality of the down. If you're messing with down its a good idea to set up a tent indoors and do this down transfer inside to keep it from getting everywhere and also wear your mask like we all have these days!
Great instructional. I bought a few of the Costco quilts and have been scouring RUclips for ideas but most are “no sew” which doesn’t usually produce as good a result. One change I’ll probably make is to mate the two sides of the quilt for a couple squares beyond the foot box. I like that feature in my commercially bought top quilts.
Wow, very impressive crafting project! Great job on the quilt. I love your do - it - yourself attitude. You can be very proud of your achievements - knowing that all of your "crafting" will be working for you on the trail! Cheers! Lamplighter 2019 out! 😉
I don't sew but I took a quilt and folded in thirds lengthwise. Then tie a knot at one end with a cord about 2 inches from the edge. Then turn it inside out and it becomes a top quilt with a foot box. I like that little 2" nub on the inside to separate and cushion my feet when I am sleeping on my side.
Now that you've gotten through the summer on the AT with this, how'd it work for you? What temps were you comfortable with? Good luck with finishing your hike!
Nicely done! Much like what I've thought about doing. Just wondering how many of the other DIY videos out there you watched to distill your idea/design ( I've seen a bunch--some, like yours, look easy; some look way too involved for me). I've even wondered about sandwiching two throws together to boost temp rating. Can't wait to hear how it works for you after testing it out. BTW check out the Sierra Designs quilts for some interesting design ideas. The corner pockets look handy and would be easy to add with just fabric.
Went to costco to buy one of these and was dissapointed in the quality. I guess it's what one should expect for $23, but the amount of down they're putting in nowadays is dysfunctionaly low...some of the baffles were practically flat! To make sure, I put it on me and it didnt have that instant heat im used to with down insulated products...in fact, it never did get very warm at all.
That’s a bummer! The quality on mine was good, but they are pretty lightweight. I decided to save mine for shorter Spring or summer trips. I ended up getting a 20° quilt from Underground Quilts that I love.
@@JoyfulRambler I was kinda desperate for something for winter camping (never camped before) and bought a marmot helium for half price on black friday. It's a premium bag and super warm (i sleep cold)...but, even though it's considered "roomy" for a mummy, i discovered i dislike ANY constriction (full zip seal & hood are nice options on super cold or windy nights, but not for over 40F). I unzip it to use as a quilt, but could use a little more width and the hood in my face can be annoying. Wish i woulda known about UGQ before...the options are fantastic!
This is by far the best Modification to these throws I have seen to date. Awesome Idea. Wish I had half of the sewing skills.

Thanks for sharing a great mod for the Costco down throw. Now for the challenge of convincing my wife to do that to one of ours.

OMG!!! You are a rock-star!!! "Best MOD ever." Thank you for sharing.
I really like the modification you have done hear. It makes the quilt so much more technical for camping. Thanks for showing.

Great job and very good ideas from a low cost throw. I think there are some projects people need to do now!
Super DIY! Great job and I would love to take sewing classes from you. Many "cottage" stores started with DIY ideas such as yours. Happy trails to you!
GREAT video! I'm thinking about doing something similar to make a top quilt for my hammock... You've given me some things to think about.
Great modification concept. Love the sheet idea.
Great video, wow thanks!!
Really great DIY for a warm weather quilt! I might try this if I can find those throws at Costco.
Thanks for sharing

Smart. Very impressed. Thank you.
although i cannot sew so this is not an option for me....This is the best concept of topquilt DIY that i have seen. super cool.
u b a smart grl !!!! well done..... makes trip more enjoyable !!!!!
Very informative DIY project. Great job!
I love your ingenuity! Keep up the good work.

Awesome job

Very informative
I plan to hike & document my preparation and AT journey 2025
New sub
(Joey-Mac Gyver). You are left-handed, which make's you smarter than the average bear!
Great design. I'm sure you enjoyed the project and saved $$$.

Very cool!
Fantastic!
very nice work!!
WELL DONE😊
Very good. Thanks.
Great instructional video! How did you find using it? What would you guess the temperature rating is?
I'm really happy with it, but mainly for warmer weather. Maybe a 40-degree rating (totally unscientific).
wow good job it pays to know how to sow!
