  • Steve Deace says there’s one lazy, stupid fan trope surrounding Michigan football that needs to stop. Michael Spath from WTKA in Ann Arbor and Wolverine Digest stops by to discuss who staying and who’s leaving the Michigan football program. The pair also mull a point of contention they have with Michigan basketball coach Juwan Howard.

I remember SI doing a big expose of this very thing in the 1990's and none other than Jim Harbaugh talking about how he was dissuaded from majoring in something substantial (History) while he was taking a shot while he was the HC at Stanford. It's well documented that UMs admission requirements don't apply to the football team. Not that this is rare, but they certainly aren't as above it as some of their fans believe they are.

There's a cultural issue in the football program that begins and ends with the head coach. Sometimes it’s great to be an online commenter that actually has the correct answer and No one will listen. That’s me. I have the answer for scUM football to be put back on the national map and begin beating tOSU on a regular basis. I will share this knowing that absolutely no one will listen...and I love it! Go back and see the way the culture changed around the tOSU program once Cooper was fired and Jim Tressel took over. It was a culture change (just as you have said), and the change wasn’t just in the program....it was extended to the student body. In short, it was everyone’s job to get on board and do whatever they could to beat scUM 365 days of the year, and 366 on leap year. No lie.....things changed dramatically. It changed so much that once Urban took over, he only had to maintain the deep respect for THE GAME that had been instilled by Tress. Tress got the horse back to its winning ways, and Urban was just a better jockey on an already fast horse.
Admitting that there needed to be a culture change was easy for tOSU fans once Coop was gone...we craved for change. Few seem to realize what the real problem is up in AA.......and I am hoping they never do

    • @Brettwbeyer14
      @Brettwbeyer14 4 года назад

@@quengmingmeow Most Michigan fans know that it's a coaching, player development and culture problem. However there's things that us regular fans cannot control. For example, what really bothers me is how lots of the more elitist season ticket holders sell their tickets to Ohio fans and the there's like 38% red in the stands. That needs to change. Another thing to keep in mind, is that the whole state cannot rally behind michigan for the goal of beating OSU, since it's divided between MSU and Michigan. MSU fans hate Michigan and don't really hate OSU. Really all we can do is just waiting and hope that things change internally within the program which doesnt seem to be likely until a regime change happens which will not be in the foreseeable future as long as they keep winning 9 and 10 games a season. We're literally in college football purgatory.

I am not sure we can really say Michigan has had good QB play this past decade. Sure there have been a few games but I don't think that necessarily means that the play was good. I mean, Shea rarely hit a WR in stride down the field. Shouldn't that be a minimum standard for good QB play?

He had very few instances on fly/vertical routes and those were the ones that he over or under threw his receivers. If people have a hard time not overreacting to week #1 then week #2 is sure to do them in.
In your last podcast you seemed to focus on Warren as the main problem. I would say he is the less of their problems.
I'll say this again, this is a really good team that is going to take some time to get to know itself.
A lot of this is going to fall on the coaches. That's my main concern. How they respond.
There is no reason this team can't do what Alabama did last year. Some said it was Saban's best job of coachng.
Not only did they lose to Texas too they had a hard time with South Florida!
Georgia also struggled last year and Alabama almost got to the national championship game
when no one thought they could.
Again I think it really falls on the coaches as this game I think ultimately did.
Michigan was not ready to play that game and that falls squarely on the coaches.
Nick Saban always put the responsibility of losses on himself first.
I've yet to hear any of Michigan's coaches put that loss as starting with them.
This team has the potential to be be in the top 2 or 3 in the country.
Regardless of what people say. Last year it was the players who seemed to run the team. This year at least for now it better be the coaches.

  • @TheRichardSmithChannel
    @TheRichardSmithChannel 4 года назад

The difference from my eyes is the talent gap and offensive strategy. The reason Bama had been better than most in recent years is because of the talent on the D Line especially the defensive tackle position and O Line with their guards. The tide turned when Clemson and Ohio State were able to recruit these top positions to their teams.
Ohio State is able to stay on top of the Big Ten because they stick with duel threat QBs. Having a running/passing QB with a spread offense opens up more opportunities for scoring. Ohio State wins because their number #1 focus is on the running game. Michigan will not compete until they copy what Ohio State is doing and the change can only come with a Coach that understands that.

I liked what I saw out of Michigan’s offense at the end of the year. This team is an elite QB away from being an excellent team. Imagine LSU without Burrow. They are just an average team. Harbaugh has yet to land a real competitor at that position. Watching Shea hand off on all those read options all year was so annoying. Great kid, but not an elite QB. I think Milton could be the answer with this new system. He may not be elite yet, but he is athletic enough to run this offense.

This is really tough to swallow but it's 100 pct true: the Detroit Lions with Matthew Stafford would be at most on a neutral field an 11 point underdog to the best teams in the NFL. There's dozens of games of data verifying this. That said Michigan football would have been at minimum 17-point underdogs last night to lsu and probably even closer to 20.
Add it all up and the lowly Lions nowadays have a much better chance of beating the top teams in NFL than Michigan now does in cfb. Just look at the two toughest games they played this year against Green Bay in lambeau and home versus Kansas City and both games went down to the very end. does anyone really think Michigan would play down to the wire games against Clemson and then LSU.
This isn't meant to be a slam on Michigan but instead on college football where the 4 or 5 elite teams have totally separated from the rest of the teams in the country. I don't recall another time before in cfb where a solid program like a Michigan is this far away from beating the elite.

In doing so, they were smelling their own farts, believing a "Michigan Man" could be the second coming. If they want to win big games, they need to do what they did to become a brand and hire a coach from Ohio, since that is where their legendary coaches and players hailed from. I was born in Ohio and I am a Buckeye fan but I also lived in Ann Arbor for 20 years and was close to the UM football program. I can tell you UM's problems are certainly not a lack of donor money nor alumni involvement nor facilities. I can also tell you the biggest problem I have seen over the last 15 years is not a lack of cheating. It is not recruitment/ rankings. The real problem for Michigan is a LACK OF PLAYER DEVELOPMENT. My favorite UM player was Mike Hart but Michigan hasn't devised a system nor developed a RB since (that was 13 years ago). Michigan had some great recruitment classes and blue chip players that the Buckeyes would love to have. But Harbaugh and those before him have done a marginal job at best with what they recruited. You have to own it. You have to make changes. If you settle then stop whining.

Listen to ex players on various podcasts talk about what they are seeing on the field; the lack of player leadership, the poor execution and choices, untying shoe laces and jumping off sides in critical times....these are not the characteristics of a championship program. Jimmy is a treasure trove of football knowledge, that's part of what makes a coach great. He lacks the other part, the Bo part, getting the max out of his players and getting them to enforce the team discipline themselves. Ward worshipping at Jimmy's feet doesn't spell long-term success, he doesn't have the stones to do what's necessary to get the team to elite status.

Just look back at all the qbs at Bama, Ohio State and LSU in the past who made it to the NFL, there's not very many. That's what changed a few few years ago as now they not only have the best players all over the field but they combined them now with the top quarterbacks. The elite nfl first rnd quarterback is often the difference between a top ten program and a championship. However, Michigan I dont think is ready yet to take that leap if they get that qb. Barrett under OSU along with Cardale Jones were not elite QBs, but behind a great system, great team and coaching were able to win the national championship in 2014 and were elite in 2015, 2016 and 17. Having a more disciplined team with good player development is really most important for Michigan to compete with the elites right now.

Online classes are still difficult. In my opinion they are harder than in-person classes because you are completely responsible for all the content for a semester. All the people whining about them have probably never stepped foot in a University classroom

Hoke left a talented roster and Harbaugh took it to an elite level. The reason he loses is he because the best players are on the bench. Joe Milton, McGrone, Hinton...
When u get a 5 star guy play him from day 1 because after 3 years if he's any good he will leave for the nfl.
Rashon Gary came to Mich. for academics but left after 3 yrs - lol
Unfortunately the term student athlete is a myth.

Curt C not at all. Still mad about 15 of the last 16 years? That’s obvious considering the fact that you’re living vicariously through Clemson cause your team can’t beat Ohio State. 😂

Who said I was a Michigan fan? It's you big mouthed buckeye fans that can't seem to win the big one...when you can...little fella then we'll listen to your tripe.

Curt C seeing as how my comment triggered you, and you’re commenting on a ttun channel, it’s pretty obvious you’re a fan of ttun, little fella. Don’t be so butthurt. You’ll win one eventually, little fella.

Joe Milton and Dylan McCaffrey are good QBs! They just lack experience. Harbaugh has not started a QB that he has recruited in 5 years now. No more grad transfers please. I thought shae wouldnt be good enough from the beginning.. and unfortunately i was right. If Dylan has even 70% of his brother's talent he will have an unreal year. And Joe Milton has a cannon! Ive wanted to see these guys play since they set foot on campus.

Steve made this up.... I've never heard Michigan fans saying any of this stuff. I used to enjoy the show, now I'm on the verge of unsubscribing.. He's more of an outsider than an insider and he NEVER has any breaking news.

I think Jim need to go hire an passing game coordinator. Move Anthony Campanile to safety coach and Bush to the LB coach. Then I say we could go 11-1 or 12-0. A lot of teams we have on our schedule do not have a lot of experience.
