In the heart of Boulogne-sur-Mer, discover the fascinating history of the Annunciades, a former convent that still resonates with echoes of the past. This building, constructed on the foundations of a medieval hospice, is one of the few witnesses of the religious institutions of the Ancien Régime in the city.
After going through turbulent periods marked by mysterious events and tragic destinies, the Annunciades convent was completely restored and has been home to the Municipal Library of the Annunciades since 1975. This is where the heritage collections of Quadrant, the library network of Boulogne-sur-Mer, find their refuge.
A Convent Steeped in History and Spirit: Originally, this building was the Sainte-Catherine hospice, founded at the beginning of the 13th century. Over time, the Franciscan sisters brought a mystical dimension by affiliating themselves with the contemplative order of the Annunciades, founded by Jeanne de France, the wife of Louis XII. This order quickly gained fame, gathering a large number of nuns within the convent. The history of the building is marked by mysterious events and renovations, including the construction of the chapel in 1779.
Shadows of the Past: The convent went through dark moments during the French Revolution, serving alternately as a prison, hospital, and munitions depot. The building then regained a religious vocation, becoming the seat of the parish of Saint-Joseph after the cathedral's destruction. During the Restoration, the Annunciades sisters retook possession of the premises to continue their mission. In 1904, they left the convent for England, leaving an atmosphere imbued with anticlericalism and a mysterious past.
A Menacing Renaissance: After being damaged during World War II and left in disrepair, the convent was restored from 1973 to 1975 to house the municipal library. Despite the vicissitudes of time, the convent remains a place where the spirit of the past seems to haunt every stone.
