There's also capacitive screens that are capable of working with gloves - it was one of the selling points for the Lumia 920.

i really do miss buttons on my phone, not being able to click on the exact button because you can't feel where the button is
Button phones still exist though but not as much
Those phones don't really exist anymore
The buttons also with heavy use can fall apart over time
Button phones are also what I refer to as Dumb Phones
We won't be seeing the button phones come back anytime soon so you will need to lump it or like it if you do not like the touchscreen devices

Yay! I remember posting this for the first time. Glad my question was answered, this was actually pretty interesting.
I've been thinking about this for a long time. Best possible use screens that you can feel is if you can feel the layout of websites/apps you are using and being able to tell buttons on the onscreen keyboard apart by touch.

i think touch screens are great for navigation and multitasking. as for information input- typing and things like car console instruments, i think tactile analog controls are the way to go

I had a colleague once who hated everything touchscreen because of the dirty screens and the fat on the fingers. He did have a touchscreen device for private and did not need a touchscreen device for work.

interesting because i made the experience that resistive screens are much less durable than capacitive ones. In retail the resistive screens are worn out very quickly due to the plastic top surface hammered by the fingernails of the cashier women (and men), where the capacitive screens have a glass top layer which is much more durable. often those women complained about the face that they can't use the screen anymore by their nails though. some resistive screens only lasted about half a year before they had to be replaced.

It is STILL not the same Linus. After I moved to the iPhone 2008 I switched to a BlackBerry Passport this year and I'm so much faster because it allows touch typing!

Resistive touchscreens do not lack precision, in fact they are more precise than capacitive (Notice how a stylus for a resistive touchscreen is a fine point while for capacitive they are like a pencil eraser nub). Their main drawbacks are that you need a lot more pressure than capacitive for them to register a touch and that they can't really do multitouch. Other than some hackish ways to get them to register a measly two touch points, they can mostly only sense a single point being touched.

I still use my Touch Pro 2. Not having physical keys is just unacceptable to me. And despite being like 5-6 years old, the phone still does all the things i need it to.
One of the most recent black berries has a keyboard and a touch screen.

the rise of incidents of texting and driving correlate with the implementation of touch screens. regular buttons are tactile enough to press while not looking while touch screens rely on sight to operate making them more dangerous to use while driving.

p.s. They make gloves that work with touchscreens nowadays and that reminds me I need to get new one's because bad thing about them is if they get dirty you can't wash them because then they stop working LOL!
daviangel Dunno how it worked but the Nokia Lumia 1020 worked with gloves - even non touch screen ones!
I wont lie i was a sceptic and hesitant to get touch screen and when i did it came with a keyboard but when i got a proper smartphone i loved it and was like omg i dont need a key pad this shit is dope
I was actually hoping he would explain how touchscreens know what exactly I'm touching. Like if there're 150 small buttons how does it know which one I picked? Like it knows exactly what it's showing and has exact coordinates programmed for each button and senses where exactly was the difference of charge?

2023 here. I would pay 2x "flagship" price for a modern-day version of the Droid 3!
The only reason I changed to touch screen smart phones was because of the screen size. But I do miss the days when I could text, watch the rode while I was driving and talk to the passenger at the same time. Now if I do that I wouldn't be able to drive one mile withought crashing my car.

Okay, but how does nokia does it? They marketed the Lumia 920 (which I own) with a highly sensitive touchscreen that works even with gloves, and it does! Even a car key works in that touchscreen with no pressure at all, how's that?

Companies forced us to get rid of physical buttons since they stopped making devices with them for the most part, I still don't know why there doesn't exist a universal clip on keyboard

Texting IS completely different without the analog buttons! It's better than a 12 key numpad, but worse than a physical QWERTY (Like the HTC Arrive or, I suppose, a Blackberry).
