i have a surge protector for my surge protector.
oh and the first surge protector is connected to a battery back up bank.
+The silent gamer Talk about prepared
+raven still i still have set up my whole home power generator/mini nuclear power plant
Zombie Apocalypse here i come.
+raven still well more like widespread power outage apocalypse. for the zombie one i have a separate bunker
+The silent gamer dude in my area, no one would be willing to take nuclear waste! how do you manage to get rid of the waste?
Oh god I thought all these years power strips had surge protection. At least none of my consoles never fried
Thats why to buy 15£ power strips not £5 power strips
Some do, some don’t, have to make sure you get the right ones
Get a surge protected power strip with integrated circuit breaker.
When I played Minecraft on my Xbox 360, I always built a house out of wood planks since it was the easiest and quickest to get within an in-game day (around 10 minutes irl) and I’m surprised they never burned down when I put a furnace in ‘em
@Eddie Kittredge got filtered lol
"destroy it entirely". it makes me remember some motherboards being fried...i just can't.... remember where i saw it
+Icaro Vasconcelos i sense some sarcasm here....
+Icaro Vasconcelos You two should get a room.
+waffle muncher iph u no wut y meen ;0
+Icaro Vasconcelos hmm i remember something of this kind the legend says they lost 3 mobo's to build a router.
+Eping | Gaming & More I think you forgot something else, I don't know, I Xeon?!
This was actually one of the most informative and useful videos I've seen on this channel. I usually just watch this for entertainment, but this has a great deal of valuable insight I can pass on to family members less in the know about electronics and even less on how to protect them.
Highly appreciated video!
0:17 Poor Dennis xD
Those electrons at 1:33 look an awful lot like atoms
they couldn't find that in clip art XD
+2facedjoker also the electrons go from the negative to the positive instead of the other way around
+Joe Mills You're not wrong but electrons are usually represented on paper as "e-" or just "e".
+2facedjoker And there flowing from positive to negative which is wrong too.
+2facedjoker they many not be electrons all electricity is a moving charged particle
This is really one of the best channels no youtube, its short and sweet yet still gives just enough info to educate you.
This was funny as hell and informative. Great job man on the video.
I do highly appreciate for your plain talk . this is a great info channel
Rip to my brother's HDTV that got fried from a lightning strike and wasn't connected to a protector. At least our whole house is surge protected now, which I never knew was possible.
I believe nowadays it is code required for new construction.
Today, some handyman was working in my neighborhood. He knocked the power out for ≈ 10 minutes.
My computer was nearly fried; but luckily I was able to do a few thinger-ma-jigs to get it booted back up.
This video reminds me of that time a few months ago where a lightning strike took out our TV, satellite + cable TV STB, Apple TV and the WAN port on the router. They were all connected to a Belkin surge protector. Guess it was too strong for it.
Had to get a new set of AV equipment. And a new surge protector that offers more protection than the one before.
Tripp-lite surge protectors seem to work out really well for many.
Nicely made video, maybe you should inform people of the different types of suppressors and their uses! Also can I stack my type 2 suppressors and get more bangs for my bucks ?
"10 dollars for absolutely free" okay linus.
thanks linus!! great vid
APC and Monoprice makes nice surge protectors. I have different models from both brands everywhere around my house.
In my relatively remote part of Scotland we don't have power hungry Aircon units and we dont have many lightning storms. all plugs & devices are fused, all homes have fuse/breaker boxes. I've never had or heard of anyone who (at least in Scotland) has had a Surge and all their electrical equipment has been fried.
You're awesome man.. !
I would like to see a video comparing different quality surge protectors. What is the minimum ratings for a single office PC vs a dual PC workstation?
The power strip surge protector is helpful as it gives some protection, and if there is a nearby storm you can unplug just the
power strip, and not have to individually unplug the TV, and the Cable box, and the Game console, and the Sound System.
5:09 "That's right; ten dollars for absolutely free..." - Linus
Hahaha! Please tell me that I am not the only one who caught that...
Hey Linus I've had a couple years of college for EE and I can say that the best way Voltage was ever described to me was "electrical pressure" so I like to pass that phrase on when I can :D
Bweiss1234
Then what is amperage?
@@totallyfrozen the amount of whatever is flowing at a time and causing pressure. If you think of it as water in a water hose, the amps is the amount of water that is coming out every second.
Can you make a video testing major brand surge protectors please?
There are also surge protectors that have a fuse in them, and if too much current runs through that fuse, it'll break. Thus not allowing any current through to anything plugged into it. Wish he would've mentioned that.
Do they have inbuilt circuit tripping feature to protect against short circuits & high currents? Also do any ups come with inbuilt surge protector?
Is this too outdated ?
Entirely. It really needs a redo/update at this point. It makes no mention at all of the other type of surge protectors that offer FAR more protection than the MOV ones he's covering in this video: Series mode, inductance-based surge protectors like the ones from SurgeX, BrickWall and Audioquest. Those are much more expensive, of course, but they can take surges up to 6000v/3000A several thousand times over without having to be replaced.
I had no idea that a surge protected power strip would still work after a power surge. The joule rating is cumulative. It can be used up over 10 years in 100 small surges, or all at once. But if you CANT SEE the indicator light, or your surge protector doesnt have an aubile alarm, youd never know it wasnt working anymore. I just lost my washer and dryer from damage to my power line from a storm and a surge protector that was likely no longer working. Hower my 86" tv and home theater was likely saved from a new surger protector with a high joule rating i bought last year. That thing popped so loud i heard it happen and could see the glow from the indicator light went off under my media console. I immediately unplugged all that.
1:47. I was using noise cancelling headphones and I found that scary ;(;(
THANK you.
About the "high number of joules", do you mean as in accumulated amount over its lifetime or in one instance? (given the 'last longer' that you added)
There was a power surge recently in my area and my MacBook's SSD (Solid State Drive) (Hard Drive) was wiped and damaged and the fan is broken and the heat sensor and 3 wires
Actually, just to correct something (maybe it is true for North America, I don't know), but here in Australia, we have powerboards (what north americans call powerstrips) which come with surge protectors built into them, the cheap ones are only good for 1 surge, but they do exist.
Another good thing we have over here is that most home insurances come with burnt motor protection, so if a surge fries the motor in say your vacuum cleaner, the insurance company will replace it
can you recommend some surge protectors? or did you already make a video on that one.
0:18 LOLOLOL Dennis photoshoped into that image lololol im weak
How do you know if your surge protector is bad? I've had this one for a good while now.
Thanks, man!
I have an ac unit causing power surges and my surge protector doesn't seem to be doing its job although it's new and handles high watts and joules. I give up.
How do you know when it's run out of surge protection?
I didn't know that the earth pin in North America is cylindrical not flat.. That's what I learnt in this video!
+Ankit Sharma It's also longer than the hot and neutral pin so that any shorts can be grounded as quickly as possible.
+Ankit Sharma It's also longer than the hot and neutral pin so that any shorts can be grounded as quickly as possible.
+UntouchedWagons Actually it's longer so that the ground connects first when you plug it in.
I knew it's longer.. I just didn't know it was rounded off
+GrayWolfTech That's more or less what I said.
So if that power board you showed did not have a surge protector, what is the little black button on the end of it?
I don't plug anything directly into the wall out let I always use a surge protection first. My TV Sound System Computer Game console Internet Router exc all plug into it first plus I also use it for Cable lines and Ethernet lines and Phone lines. I had a surge spike once fried everything I owned.
The Xbox One power brick has a built in surge protector but no third prong. So where are the voltages going to?
so here is basically the summary.
don't use a surge protector because they likely will stop being useful after a couple surges, and you have to physically unplug it anyway after that, so...why not just unplug the electronics during storms. kinda defeats the purpose.
don't use UPS system back up power supplies because they need to be powered on constantly and charge constantly even when off and make your power bill go up. some of them also beep and make noise.
so basically what it comes down to is....just. DONT use anything. its best to keep an eye on the weather and unplug during bad storms or just keep UPS power supply unplugged and only plug it in and plug stuff into during bad storms to be prepared.
there is no easy way to deal with this issue apparently. everything requires you to physically keep an eye on things and unplug or plug things.
Are you dense? Bad weather doesnt account for all surges, in fact they account for less than half. He even says in the video like wtf
My power supplies keep breaking within hours, is this apower surge or could a faulty motherboard cause them to break? Also will a surge protector stop my power supply breaking?
Ok, so, how DO you protect against a lightning strike? Is turning the surge protector switch off enough? Or does it need to be completely unplugged. I just lost over $3k worth of gear due to a lightning strike and everything was plugged into highly rated surge protectors...
I used to make surge protectors at Western Electric in Kansas City, Missouri. They were porcelain.
what surge protector can I get for a 800w 8000 btu window ac? I see some specifically targeted at 24k btu 220v units or just small electronics, nothing in the middle...
I need a black 6 plug surge protector with 2 amp usb outputs in the UK. Any suggestions? not the 2x2 style either just a long single one.
So is it necessary to plug my power supply to a surge protector strip or could I plug it straight to a wall ac?
1:34 No particles actually move, if I'm not mistaken. Just flow of delocalised electrons through metal/cations.
My house doesn't have the grounding plug on the outlets (Built in the early 1900's - knob and tube wiring). I'm assuming this means even if I use a surge protector power bar it will have no effect? Is there any way to fix this without spending thousands of dollars to re-wire my house?
I love your videos, the quick format is great! I have three questions 1. What if you chain several surge protectors together? what happens if they are not identical in terms of clamping voltage or joule rating? 2. If you have a power conditioner, and a surge protector, and a UPS is there a sequence which they would most optimally be chained? 3. Will using a surge-protector, with a power conditioner on the same breaker allow a surge that is safely shunted to ground, to re-enter the electrical wiring through the power conditioners softer interface with the shared ground? is that a thing? like aaaa ground loop of death!...?. 4. BONUS QUESTION! what about a really, really,... ReALLy.... BiG magnet!
All of these good questions and no answers.
Does a surge protector stop protecting after one power outage?
Linus!
Please do a tech quickie on wireless saturation.
Thanks!
You know the best thing about watching a fast as possible video? It's the perfect length to watch while pooping. 👍🏻
0:18 holy crap! Dennis! what are you doing???? :DDDDDDDD
Wouldn't a voltage surge simply reduce current draw limited by the resistance of the load?
Is the next video going to be on UPS'? cause it should =P
i like your style !
surge protection is good but if i don't have grounded all house, i have a line off grounding but only in kitchen what will happen if no grounding. . ???
I got one that says 134 joules and 2000va/2000w is that enough for a mid range pc gamer?
Do the power companys have power surge protection ?
I have a surge protector that tells me if it has protection or not. It has a green light that says "protection present" if it's on, I have protection. When the limit of Joules hits it, the light would turn off. According to dad, when the Joules limit hits a surge suppressor, it will just not work anymore and my dad knows about it.
TECHQUICKIE< the joules rating doesn't tell you what is the "response time" how long is the surge protectors response time because if the power surge is 2 seconds or more it will damage everything that is plugged into the surge protector? Most surge protectors use VAR but the VAR is rated in Joules? because the VAR for 300 joules and a VAR for 4500 Joules I don't see in the VAR data sheets rated in joules
So how DO you protect your electronics from lightning strikes? (For the general user)
Is adding a Protection Plan or Extended Warranty to a Surge Protector pointless?
Do electrons go from positive to negative in Canada?
can a surge kill my on board lan port?
because em
it was thundering n stuff
i went to sleep and when i woke up my pc was turned off and when i turned it back on it couldn't detect my lan port anymore
nice quick guide from a younger version of Linus!
Linus Nye the science guy
I can't unsee the hand-to-pocket promoter advance
i had a surge protector, but the lighting just fried my computers via Ethernet so still screwed, don't forget to protect that too.
good thing i installed wifi kit for my pc
Here I thought I was being paranoid when I went to the electronics section specifically for a surge protector and not a power strip that I found in the other sections at Walmart. Nope. The surge protector is superiour. Though at 500j I'm feeling a bit cheated. Oh well. Better than nothing!
My surge protector has one Ethernet port so what is that for and how can I use it.
hey linus, how circuit breaker works video please?
good video .. i did learn a little about surge protectors that I didn't know but .... your little graphic with the negative and positive and the (what looks like a representation of) electrons is backwards. Electrons which are the partials that "carry" electricity are negatively charged. A negative terminal has more electrons and the positive terminal has fewer therefor electricity moves from negative to positive because it always tries to "even out". Going from positive to negative is a common misconception ... maybe because everyone sees circuits terminating at ground which is negative they assume that ground is where the electricity "stops" .. lol other than that .. I did like the video ... just thought I would point that out :)
@0:18 omgdennis you never looked so good.
Linus...i have a 6-plug protector and then a multiplug protector with a replaceable fuse and built in breaker, overkill? Who knows.
this video was quite shocking
haha
😐
✔✔✔FUNNY ALERT?!?!? *NOT CLICKBAIT* (REAL POLICE CALLED) (PUN FOUND😯😯😯😯) 😱👍✌🤩🙂✔💘🤩😠🙂😳
any recommendations?
If Thor is angry at ya and threatens to unleash his wrath on you by hitting you with mjölnir a power surge would be my last of worries ...
this guy is linus tech tips
I just had 2 power surges in one month in this shitty hotel I'm staying and it ruined my $1,300 gaming laptop! 😠
Report them
You know what sucks, grounded outlets aren't a standard in Denmark yet, so we have no way of properly grounding electronics.
My new surge protector is 3000 Joules and is not certified by UL and it was the only one at Lowe's so I just got it anyway
At 1:32 doesn't electrons move from the negative pole to the positive one? You animated it the other way around.
Then whats the difference between the stabilizers and surge protectors??
So when my pc suddenly shuts down and reboots and it says Asus power surge protected you from... Isn't my PSU being broken but the electricity going to it being to much aka a surge?
Hey Linus can u do a stabilizers as fast as possible?
Doesn't Canada go more by CSA or is that less reliable than UL?
My UPS has surge protector and insurance for up to 750 000 USD and i have 3 😅
One for the display.
One for the computer.
And one for the sound system.
It is because the power goes down here in my house and the grid too often and i hate when everything goes in bluescreen or having trouble starting again
lightning is a big problem where I live right on top of a hill on average 3 strikes hit with in 30m of my house every storm and surge protectors do nothing even $250 top end ones had one pc explode wile using it also took out $20k more of stuff so when there is a storm just unplug sensitive electronics also since I don't unplug my modem router they die basically every year or every time the dsl line takes a direct hit
his right hand grabs his belt every 10 secs
He is switching to the next slide...It can never be unseen now...
Is MET acceptable in place of UL?
1:30 electricity actually flows from negative to positive
Yes it does. "Hole flow" or conventional current flows from positive to negative.
PhilfreezeCH yeah but we aren't living in Benjamin Franklin's time
Okay, so the answer to this is actually a gray area. In physics, electrons travel from negative to positive. This is the actual way electricity flows. But, electrical engineers write wiring diagrams and understand semiconductors under the assumption that electricity goes from positive to negative. Either way is fine and it really just depends on the environment.
MY FUCKING HEART headphones in and that thunder sound effect scared the shit out of me
My PS3 and AT&T got hit bad during a storm. Fried any use of the HDMI1. Yet my 360 still can run on HDMI2.
is a surge suppressor and a surge protector the same?
Whole house surge protectors/suppressors work best (one can add point of use surge protectors as a second line of defense if desired). Whole house units don't cost that much and do a much better job than fancily-packaged point of use units.
Not actually true. A whole-house surge protector normally has a much higher clamping/let-through voltage point than an individual device surge protector does. Because of this, you always want to take a layered approach to surge protection. Never rely on just a whole-house surge protector by itself. It's a good idea to have one at your service panel, for sure, but you should also have individual device surge protection on each of your high-value electronics as well. Keep in mind here that surges can actually come from inside the house (washers and dryers, furnaces, AC systems, garbage disposals, lighting systems, etc.) as well as from outside. Studies have shown that roughly 80% of all surges experienced at a site originate from on-premise equipment. This is why individual surge protectors are still very important, even when a whole-house surge protection device is in place.
Linus, Thor uses his hammer (Mjölnir) to control lightning.
