I cannot express to you how utterly strange finding this video has been for me.
This concert occurred on my birthday. Like, my _first_ birthday, the original one, at the hospital. I was approximately 2 hours drive away. Eleven years later, I would steal a Windham Hill CD from my Dad, I would play it on a Walkman I bought at Salvation Army. I dubbed it to tape and played it on an under-charged tape deck so it would be slow enough for me to work out what he was doing. I worshiped this guy, he's the reason I started playing guitar.
Now 24 years later, and two days before my 35th birthday, I find this video on a random dive through the algorithm. I play Layover as a lullaby for my 1 year old daughter.
The kicker? You posted this on February 6th. My mother's birthday.
I have debated posting this at all, the experience is so strange I fear I may be dreaming. But I decided that since you, however inadvertently, caused this experience for me, you should at the very least be entitled to share it.

I first experienced Michael Hedges music at the Fox theater in St Louis Mo. It was billed as an evening with Windom Hill.I went to see Shadowfax, but was completely blown away with his style.
I seen him twice afterwards. The last was a twin billing of Michael and Leo Kotke. After Michael's set I went to the lobby to get a drink and Michael was walking by himself.I said hello to him and we talked for 20 minutes. He was such a down to earth guy and made an impact on my musical taste and inspired me to play guitar more.
He was a amazing individual and to this day one of my favorite guitarist.
Thank you for posting this show.
P.S. Thanks for the music, inspiration.RIP Micheal

Michael has left a deep impression on everyone he performed for, and really anyone who has had the pleasure to hear his music. He's clearly a rare personality, with such presence, warmth and talent unmatched, unrivaled. We are blessed to have his music, interviews and the stories of those who performed with him to remember him. I miss you Michael, you'll forever live in my heart and mind.

My guitar hero, he invented the style many copied and developed later. I was lucky to see him twice live (in Baltimore and Annapolis). He was a composer first and player second, both guitar and flute excellent playing. Too many guitar players today just fool around on guitar and paste together a composition, he worked opposite (right) way: create it in his head and then decide how to play it, and on which instrument. Can't imagine what would he play today, if not for that late night accident ...

Feel so fortunate to have seen Michael play in Sapporo, Japan in 1986. My fiancé at the time (now wife of 30 years) had choreographed some dance to Michael’s music. We went back stage after the show and found him to be one of the most genuine, engaging person we had ever met.

I a huge Hedges fan. Sat front row at two of his shows here in Phoenix. One was an outdoor show where everyone brought their lawn chair and ice coolers. There was a lot of beer drinking that night! That was the Taproot tour. After the concert I hung around and Hedges came out at sat at a picnic table. there was about five of us still hanging around. Michael came out and signed autographs and sat and talked for 30 minutes or so. It was down to earth conversation. Good times.

I saw Michael at Westport theatre in the round (St. Louis) revolving stage earlier in the year of his passing. Only two times got very upset of musicians passing, SRV and Michael. He looked me in the eye as he does some of the audience when playing hammer-ons. I just waved him off like come on man. What a player and human being!

I attended this show, I got his album the christmas before and sat with my guitar trying to figure out his tunings. I was lucky to be living in great barrington with my parents, I was back on college break. It was intense to watch something that you never would have thought to see again. My brother jon suters has become a local guitar legend in the berkshires and I believe his time listening to michaels cds helped influence the player he is.

I really want to thank you for posting this. When I was going to Rutgers in the late 80s, a friend of mine gave me an audio version of this show. I lost track of it some years ago and have been trying to find it ever since. Michael Hedges was one of the very best guitar players ever. He was incredibly innovative, totally fearless, and absolutely unique. People may forget, but he was revered by the great guitarists’ of his era. The fact that this is, without question, one of The greatest performances on RUclips of anyone playing guitar in any capacity and, in all the time it’s been up, there are not even 500 likes, just shows how few people even know of his existence. Being virtually forgotten is a fate he certainly does not deserve. If you’re into guitar, I highly suggest this video. I promise he will blow you away. Again, thanks for posting.

I saw him live here in Knoxville. I was in the fifth row center. He blew me away. I'll never forget that concert. On All Along the Watchtower, in my not so humble opinion, he puts Jimi Hendrix in the gutter. What an incredible talent. RIP. What a tragic loss. Aerial Boundaries will forever be one of my favorites. An incredible talent. He was one of a kind and I've never heard anyone come close to his talent.

I remember reading a Guitar Player magazine in the late 90's and there was just a short paragraph about his passing away. I remember being disappointed that his passing was just a two square inch footnote on one of the misc. comment pages. When all my friends where into Heavy Metal I was spending a lot of time listening to Hedges "Heavy Mental!"

Love "Because its There". It is so arresting. I know the backstory is about the Japanese explorer. I feel that spirit in the song. Maybe Its saying something to me...
I remember reading the insert dedication Michael left in his "Aerial Boundaries" album cd. Dedicated to Hans Lippershey the inventor of the lens used in the "Looker" looking scope. :^)
Michael allowed himself freedom to walk inspired and stay in the creative spirit.
    Be free to be.

I'm only part way into the concert but I already know one thing. If a guitar had its own voice, if it could play what is inside of its wood and steel and workmanship, if it could play itself with no human intervention, it would be singing Silent Anticipations through Michael Hedges oracular fingers.
Thanks so much to the poster. You have done a service to our species!
