- Although it didn't really need it, I decided it was time to do some maintenance on my 2020 Jeffsy Base...along with some upgrades.
In this video, I remove the and clean the crankset and the bottom bracket, and upgrade the shifter and derailleur from SX to SRAM GX (while keeping the same chainring, cassette, and chain).

Good for you Charlie it always feels like a great sense of accomplishment when you can work on your own bike to fix issues or replace parts and you get to really learn about your bike. Great vid!!!
Yeah for sure! Even though I didn't fix everything, getting to the end and having the bike still work feels like an accomplishment lol
Great insight as always keep it going Charlie getting better!
Much appreciated!
You're quickly becoming a professional bike mechanic lol!
Nice job though. My hardtail was creaking for the longest time and it's sometimes hard to specify exactly where the creak is coming from. In the end though, it happened to be my derailleur hanger wasn't tight enough.
But, did you try tightening your pedals?
The GX is alot beefier and its quite good looking to boot.
I ordered a GX crankset, and that arrived last week. Now, if my jeffsy I've been waiting on for over two months would just get here........
And wow, I can't believe how much crap was inside of that BB dude! Holy shit......
Yeah I don't know how all that junk got into the bb, I was kind of shocked tbh.
I don't think the crease is the pedals, because I actually replaced them recently, but I will double-check they're still properly tight.
This is crazy....i basically just did the same damn thing to my bike. As ive commented before i just got my 2020 jeffsy base al 27.5, 2 months ago. Actually had a bent sx derailleur from YT and know someone else with the same issue. Yt warranted my bad sx derailleur, in the mean time i upgraded to a GX and its great. I also had a creak after a few rides and ended up pulling the bolts for the shock out and giving them a cleaning as well as the rear pivot bearings in the rear chainstay back by the rear axle. That rear pivot was actually dry and creaking alot when bunnyhopping and stuff. I never pulled the BB cause i dont have the tool yet. Also checked the derailleur hanger with a parktool dag 2.2 and it was straight. Great videos and so happy to see a fellow jeffsy owner out there doing there own maintenance. Absolutely awesome. Great bikes!!!!
How much of a job was it pulling and greasing the pivots? I think I need to try that next...
@@CharlieWentOutside very easy and way easier than the bottom bracket. Just make sure you have a good quality allen wrench so no stripped bolt heads
Nice video, Charlie!
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing!
The creak could be coming from your cranks. I would heavily grease where the spindle and drive side crank connect. I had that problem on my bike and it took me forever to find what the creak was.
One small tip about the creaking issue: grease your pedals! I had a similar very annoying creaking problem with BB30 onCX and bike. I was 100% sure that the sound came from the BB. I disassembled my BB and applied Loctite as recommended by many people in forms. No change. I changed my BB bearings. Still creaking. I greased and tightened the crank. Still the same sound. And only after i greased and retightened my pedals did the creaking went away. Its takes only a couple of minutes and is worth trying in my opinion.
Yeah, I will check that when I wrench on it again, but I'm pretty sure it isn't the pedals - I've actually switched them between when the creaking started and now, and the new ones that are in there definitely went in with a hefty dose of anti-sieze. But I'll take them out, clean, and reinsert next time anyway just in case!
Couldn’t you just upgrade to the gx derailer without changing the shifters? Or are new upgraded shifters necessary for getting the benefits out of the new derailer?
Great video, I've got the exact same bike and I just started getting creaking from the bottom bracket as well. I'm also getting rattling noise from the internal cable when climbing, do you get that as well?
Hmm, I haven't noticed any internal rattling, but I'll keep an ear out for it.
What is the standard BB inside the Jeffsy 2020 when the bearings needs replacement? Great video...thanks.
SRAM DUB, BB92 Pressfit. I'll be replacing this with a different set of BBs in an upcoming video.
Can you do a video on removing frame bearings ? Thanks
Charlie, as I mentioned on one of your other videos, from the get go my Jeffsy has this clicking sound that i cannot pinpoint where is it coming from (checked the crank, re torqued the whole bike and checked the back shock) and still has the same clicking sound.
As far as shifting, it doesn’t shift smoothly even when I regressed it and adjusted it.
My local bike shop won’t work on YT because direct consumer bike companies are killing their business. So I need to look for another bike shop.
Have you tried cleaning the bottom bracket? Didn't fix this for me, but it might for you.
Also yeah, find a new bike shop. That attitude is so stupid. I understand why bike shops don't like the direct-to-consumer business model, but refusing other business and turning money away because of it is cutting off your nose to spite your face. And you can't really complain someone *else* is "killing your business" when you're literally kicking would-be paying customers out the door. /rant
Is it required to upgrade the SRAM cassette to GX as well or is the entire Eagle line compatible? I am looking at upgrading to the GX groupset but I am hesitant because I do not have really any wear on the cassette or even the crankset. With the shifter and derailleur, I could save half the cost. Any help would be appreciated as you have the same model bike and it's awesome to learn from your videos.
Nope, you don't need to upgrade the cassette (or the crankset). The cassette and crankset on my Jeffsy are still stock, I just replaced the derailleur and shifter. The Eagle stuff is all cross-compatible, with the exception of the new 52-tooth cassette I think (but the Jeffsy doesn't have that so it's not an issue you need to worry about in this case)
🔥👍🏻 thanks
Question!!! If I bought an XO1 groupset will the cassette be compatible? I saw somewhere that the freehub
what are the references of the two park tools you used (the oe for pushing the BB out and the other one for pressing it in)?
Good question! For pushing the BB out: RT-1. For squeezing it back in: HHP-3. They also make a nicer "shop" version of a bearing press but it costs more.
I also used their shop hammer (HMR-4) but that's not really necessary; any hammer you have should do the job, and the anti-sieze I put on was theirs too, ASC-1.
Hey charley how did you get your hand on this beauty? What month did you order?
Ordered in March
I have the same bike and had a clicking sound while pedaling. Did the same thing with the bottom bracket but the sound was still there. I removed the seat clamp and greased the inside and the clicking sound is gone. Give it a shot.
Interesting, I will have to try this! I had kinda ruled out the seat because it happens even when I'm standing, but the dropper clamp didn't even occur to me...
Please report back of that's it!
@@smckinnon Will do!
Same here for the jeffsy base! I first thought the sound was coming from the headset, but it was the seat clamp.
Hi Charlie!
Which bike stand do you use? Happy with it?
Many thx for your videos and keep up the good work!
x
Thanks! Currently my bike stand is "lean the bike against a cardboard box" and so far I'm pretty happy with it 😂. Someday I will probably buy or build something, but for now this works fine.
@@CharlieWentOutside :
Hi Charlie!
Sorry, for being unclear: I was referring to the assembly stand that to use to work on your bike.

@@bernhardsteirer5552 Oh OK! It is a cheap Amazon one, and I am happy with it, but I'm not sure I'd buy it now. It was $50 when I bought it, but I checked just now on Amazon and it now costs over $70: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TGUL89C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I'd probably look for something cheaper, as it doesn't really have to have any complex features or be nice, it just needs to steadily hold the bike off the ground.
@@CharlieWentOutside Many thx for clarifying!
As a keen jeffsy rider since 2016 carried out most repares an noises on the bike ,contact me if u need some help with the bb or any other noises .
Does the jeffsy comp use the same type of bottom bracket mine is creaking too
I think they all use the same BB, yeah. However, before you spring for a new BB, have you tried this? This is what ended up fixing it for me: ruclips.net/video/TLpnhSA18xQ/видео.html
Try putting a dab of oil in all pivots and bearings, it usually fixes creaking problems
What kind of oil?
Charlie Went Outside Any high viscosity oil, for transmision or similar will do
What exactly happened to ur shifter and derailleur? I see lots of negative comments about SX too but not sure if it's really that bad.
Nothing really, I was just struggling to get it tuned correctly, and heard the same horror stories about SX. I figured if nothing else, upgrading to GX would make a worthwhile challenge/video and teach me more about the bike, so I went for it.
@@CharlieWentOutside U mean the sx just won't shift smoothly and correctly? That's why u change the shifter and derailleur?
@@tonggan7318 That and hearing a lot of stories about it causing problems, and being interested in seeing if I could do an upgrade myself, yes.
@@CharlieWentOutside Sounds Amazing! But i'll see for myself if SX is really that bad, if it is I gonna chop it off and get another combo 😂 And why wouldn't u go straight to X01 But GX?
@@tonggan7318 Price. X01 costs more (not a TON more, but there's only so much I can spend on bike stuff in a given month, and the local guy I talked to with a jeffsy whose SX got sucked into the wheel had upgraded to, and recommended, GX)
Do you know which bottom bracket is? I need to replace my 2020 jeffsy bottom bracket. Sram dub pressbit 92mm??
BB92 pressfit dub, yes. The one specced with it is made by sram and pretty cheap, but there are a couple third party options as well. I'd recommend checking out the YT owners group on Facebook and searching for bottom bracket, I think you'll find some posts there that list all the different available options.
@@CharlieWentOutside thanks man! I’m gonna try to find that group on FB!!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Charlie what did the creaking end up being caused by?
One of the linkage bolts being out of torque. I made a quick video about it here: ruclips.net/video/TLpnhSA18xQ/видео.html
@@CharlieWentOutside Awesome, thanks Charlie!
Any idea what BB is in the 2020 Jeffsy Base AL?
SRAM DUB pressfit is what it comes with I believe
Maybe try a threaded BB?
You mean convert to a threaded BB that can still fit into the jeffsy's not-threaded frame? Definitely considering it, but tbh I don't know what options there really are, and there are so many different BB types it's kinda confusing trying to figure out if a given product can actually fit in my bike.
Are there good options you know about that would specifically fit in the Jeffsy?
Sorry, not really sure how. I am just kinda throwing ideas out there. My Jeffsy arrives in 4 weeks and now im a little concerned. Wheels mfg has an option that looks likes its press on one side and threaded on the other
@@markf4968 Yeah there do seem to be a few options. Anyway, I wouldn't be too concerned about it if I were you - it's just a noise, and one that any bike can end up making. Other commenters here have suggested it might actually be the dropper clamp though, I'm going to look into that. Might not even actually be the bb at all.
Cutting the Old cable was pretty unnecessary. You could have only pull the wire end cap off. Now you can't use cable again or if you're selling the derailleur the cable is probably too short.
It can be replaced, but tbh I kinda doubt anyone would want a used SX shifter anyway. They're $30 NEW.
