Cookies and beer? Learn to work on your bike yourself, problem solved. I don't know why everyone acts like it's so hard. I'm fairly new to mountain biking. I've repaired/replaced absolutely every component on my bike and it couldn't have been easier. Bike shops have that snobby attitude because deep down, they know they are really no longer needed. May be replacing my bike soon, and the jeffsy 27.5 has got my attention.........
It's often a question of time, and how much you want to put into it. But you're right, there's a video on RUclips for every last DIY bike repair there is.
The YT bikes come with a very detailed manual for putting together and service. Most people should be fine on their own iMO

YT deez nutz! Bike shops suck deez nutz!!! Shops charge a lot for what they do. I will bring my cash but they better be the ones setting out cookies and beer. Chicks dig me, dudes wanna be me, kids look up to me. I am a carbon crank crushing beast and doggonit bike shops don't like me cuz I don't suck up, dang! So get your bike hit some sweet jumps get some vote for Pedro tools and diy...
You bring them cookies and beer, rubbish! I take mine to my local bike shops and spend £££ on new parts and servicing so they are quids in. My shop also did some warranty work and I paid them to remover the faulty reverb because I'm a lazy git.
sampsalol depends on your riding style. do you like pedalling a lot? do you like jumping around a lot? do you want agility or top speed? i just ordered the cf one 27.5 and im 1.90m tall cuz i want a bike i can throw around. i dont care about lap times and/or rolling over obstacles easier. its all about having fun for me and a smaller wheeled, snappier bike is more fun. now you decide for yourself whats gonna be fun for you.
They do not this year. They have some excuse that you can tell how any hardtail is going to ride just by looking at it's geometry and components. Maybe that's true for engineers but it certainly isn't for the average consumer. Just last year I rode two trail hardtails with very similar geometry and fork travel and yet they performed very differently. Most of us still ride hardtails, we want to see more hardtails.
Typical response from the "stuck in the past" bike industry. Their thinking, when applied to the book industry, pre-dates barnes and noble, let alone Amazon. What the fourth wall breaking presenter fails to recognize is that a lot of shops are failing because of poor overall service and the unspoken truth that they can't call out the industry on, which is the ridiculous price points for any bike. They talk about 3000 dollar starter bikes!?! Canyon and YT are going to fix this problem, which is responsible for shrinking the number of people on bikes (lowest point in 30-40 years). No one is talking about that in the industry, because they're a bit of an echo chamber. I guess we can look forward to more "cookies and beer" kind of comments from them next year when they're reviewing the Spectral and Strive from Canyon. :)
I don't get the whole bike-shop-against-servicing-direct-to-consumer sold bikes. It's like bikes shops only want to service the brand(s) that they sell. I don't know of any bike shop that sells every brand. If your bike shop doesn't make money servicing bikes don't service bikes. It shouldn't matter how the bike was sold, whether it was from another shop or online, or secondhand, If you can service it, do so, and charge appropriately, without bitching about sales models that you believe are a threat to your outdated way of business. One of the most successful bike shops I deal with sells just two brands of bike but will go out of their way to service and help out anyone, with any brand of bike, who comes in the door, so they come back again and again. Online bike sales are a reality, deal with it. Jeffsy looks great BTW. Seriously considering one.
shop I work at does not discriminate , if somebody wants to bring in a build easy money . Thats like not fixing somebodys bike because they bought it second hand lol . Sounds like there is some really shit LBS in the world .
If I'm bringing my bike to a bike shop, I'm bringing them money. If that's not good enough, they can K my A and I'll take the bike elsewhere. Wanna know why bike shops are "struggling"? Because 95% of them are owned and run by A Holes. I went into a shop a week ago to get some sealant and a set of tubeless valves. The guy acted like I was annoying him by coming in. Why the hell would I buy a bike there? My dad took his Schwinn into the one of the longest established shops where I live. He wanted a tune-up on his bike. They told him to leave, because "that's not a bike". Not kidding you at all. This whole "support your LBS" nonsense has no foundation in reality.
What happened to your video(and AUDIO) production quality this year!? Was anyone even monitoring the audio during this recording? Is that auto-gain noise or was there someone tumbling a cage of walnuts off camera? I couldnt even concentrate on what the guys are saying.
I can't wait until Canyon is in the states! Much needed disruption to the bike industry, bringing high quality stuff at a more appropriate price. Shops with good service will continue to do well. Those with poor service will fail, and new services, like VeloFix will find a place as the "amazon model" is adopted.
Cookies and Beer??? Seriously? The bike industry began writing it's own demise by continuously pressing the consumer with ridiculous margins for the past 15-20 years. They, (LBS, factories, wholesalers) should be begging people to keep supporting their outdated business model. Nobody should have to take out a loan to buy a f'n bike. If a LBS doesn't like the YT/Diamondback/Canyon bike that someone brings in, then they don't get the business.END! Working on a bike isn't rocket surgery. Plenty of RUclips vids on how to DIY. As another poster commented, "Adapt or die"!
Direct sales will drive shops to close more likely. Small ones at least. These days...the only thing most shops are good for are hanging out and mechanical work since you can get the bikes and all the accessories much cheaper online. And since more people are taking on working on their bikes at home...even the shop mechanics are becoming obsolete. Sure...if you want one of the larger name bike you have to go through a shop...but more and more they aren't offering anything better than you can get through direct sales. And direct sales bikes cutting out the shop profits are able to get you the same or more bike for the money. It's a win lose situation. I hate to see the shops close. But I also like saving hundreds or even $1000+ dollars on a bike.
You know they're selling those things direct out of a warehouse right here in Gnarly B.C. Why don't you guys ever film yourselves testing a bike like that on terrain that's truly sphincter tightening?
That dude with the V neck would be impressed with a Dodge Grand Caravan. Get him off these tests if you want to maintain any credibility. God he just reads the specs like they describe his ride, just a boring personality to listen to.
Appreciate the discussion because I'm feeling this bike but don't want to be diggin in my pocket for service and repairs on it. This sucks to hear because I Fuckz with my LBS but don't want BS by choosing to obviously better Bang for the Buck choice.
Mail/internet order shops are still bike shops that hire bike mechanics, sales, etc. just like a brick and mortar shop. Personally where I live the shops rarely have higher end bikes in stock in multiple sizes and I would would rather get good service over the internet, since I do 95% of my own mechanic work. There is no reason to feel sorry for the local bike shop. These same comments were being said 20+ years ago about mail order and guess what? Bike shops still exist! In fact, they've expanded!
As a shop employee, let me say this: These days, the best bike stores are the ones that make themselves community hubs. They work their butts off to make sure everyone is as stoked on riding bikes as they can be. Whether you're riding a Bikes Direct bike or a YT or a Canyon, they will work on it and put in just as much effort as on the bikes they carry. The difference is that they'll know a lot more about the bikes they carry and likely have the ability to give more support on them. i.e. if some small part breaks, it's more likely for a shop to have it if they carry that brand and quicker to get it in than if they don't. And always bring your mechanic beer(s), goddammit!
Hi! What size would you recommend for someone that is 5" 8.5 (1.74 cm) (to be precise)? YT says a medium on their website, but I've heard I should go for a large considering the bikes are small in sizes.
Great review! I just got my Jeffsy 29er aluminium. I'm absolutely delighted with it, It's beyond my expectations. Good job there is big powerful brakes because it is lightening quick!
I've had my eye on a YT (Capra), but as a former bike shop employee I've also wondered how a shop would react if I brought one in for service. Not that I think they'd do a poor job, but I can't help thinking that LBSs must be recoiling at the thought of consumer-direct sales. Hopefully cookies and beer will suffice to soothe the LBS. As a consumer though, YT is definitely at the top of my list value-wise and I'm happy to hear that the Bike Mag guys have a favorable opinion of the Jeffsy.
I have wondered the same thing. I think though that companies like YT and Canyon compete in a very different arena than most local bike shops. These days most shops are diversifying their business, focusing on service, selling parts and accessories and selling largely entry level bikes for people who are either not interested in or not willing to work on their own bikes. YT might take a couple of high end sales here and there but they won't compete with the bulk of the LBS business. I find the changes in the bike industry a little unsettling as well but that's the nature of a relatively young industry, in order to stick with it we all have to be ready to adapt.
Wild Outdoor Living Well put. I think there was a Bike Mag video where they discussed the topic. One good point that I recall was that the best LBSs are becoming more of a community center providing services rather than being more centered around sales.
I work at a Trek shop and Trek now does certain things online. We were really offended by it at first but the money we make doing services on bikes that are brought in from other shops is almost more than we make on selling bikes as well as those bikes that are picked up at our shop. We're a smaller shop so our profit from high end stuff doesn't really add up. Probably different for the bigger stores.
The bike shops in europe charge about 40-45% more for servicing YT and Canyon bikes. Some of them even refuse to do it.People who buy these bike are quite good at servicing bikes so they do it by themself. I owned a canyon bike and I got a good buddy who would help a lot, if I would take the bike to the bike shops all the time I would pay lots of €€€. I
That's quite interesting I did not know that. In the US good bike shops will typically work on everything that comes through the door (there's way less bikes here though). Most people who are buying higher end bikes regardless of the brand do the majority of the minor services themselves and only come into a shop when the job needs a specialty tool, like a headset or BB press.
I am really having an issue picking a new bike. I sold my new Kona Process 153 27.5 because it was a size smaller than i thought it should be. Instead of just getting the large of the Kona i am considering something different. The kona 29er felt hugeeeee, not sure i want to go that route. The YT Jeffsy CF Pro is top of my list, but i was also considering YT Cabra, the Evil Following MB, maybe a Trek ex7 or 8...I think a mid travel 29er is what i want, that can play like a 27.5 but can be planted like a 29er. For the money is this bike the best, most playful, best all around bike you think for the money?? Help! lol
People, if you have to ingratiate yourself to a "wrench" to get them to take your money for services they offer, go somewhere else. And if they can't do it in a manner that lets you know they are geniunely grateful for your business, let the "wrench" go dig ditches.
There will come a point when the comment at the end will be 100% true. Bike shops will have to stop servicing these bikes and owners will have to use stand alone repair buisnesses like Velofix.
Nonsense. You're clueless about any type of economy. If bike shops start refusing to service direct sales, I'm immediately opening a shop that services everything and those shops will be QUICKLY out of business. And so are 10 other guys. That demand doesn't just evaporate into the ether. Someone will gladly take that business.
I shouldn't have to bribe a shop before OR after I bring them business!
When are you guys going to get your hands on a canyon?
Looks like a fun bike
Potsie is hammered!
You bring them cookies and beer, rubbish! I take mine to my local bike shops and spend £££ on new parts and servicing so they are quids in. My shop also did some warranty work and I paid them to remover the faulty reverb because I'm a lazy git.
Should I get this bike in 29 or 27.5? I just don't know.. I'm 175cm with small to medium build.

Wow, this is the most substantive commentary from the "bible" of bike tests which is literally marketing and brand stroking gibberish.
I most have missed something but I didn't understand the end
direct sales cut out the local bike shop
Quebec Echo you can buy this bike directly from YT. So you're not "supporting" your LBS
pwho LBS can still earn with upgrades and service. If they throw out the customer just because he got a bargain not good for the sport.

Quebec Echo, Don't worry about it. It's just more BS from Travis Engel. (Explanation above).
awesome the dude who has a hard on for santa cruz isn't on the panel tonight

Swap out the camera man for someone that doesn’t have Parkinson’s please.
that bike shop comment was unnecessary you bring them good money they fix bike!

How about testing the 2019 Stumpjumper
Ever heard of a tripod
They have a film student that thinks the Blair Witch shaky, blurry cam is art nouveau.
LOL
27.5" Jeffsy test ????
YT RULES
If you had to choose between the Jeffsy 29 and the Pivot 429 trail, as an all around trail bike, which would you choose?
Endo Alley Jeffsy. I think the Pivots ugly.
Maybe. I just wonder which bike rides better.
Endo Alley ..Pivot is a really good bike but ugly colors on the 429 trail and has a Lego look to them
Why is the 360p only?
softbatch7236 whaddya mean?
When I loaded in the quality was 360p only. Now it's got fullHD.
Was just uploaded. Try it again.
