I always use to sew from top to bottom then I saw on RUclips someone said to do it opposite way is correct I'm going back to my old way
There is an idea of "directional sewing." Directional sewing has to with sewing along the grain to prevent puckering. On tapered pieces, one stitches from the widest to the narrowest (e.g, the bottom of a pant leg to the waistline); on curved pieces the stitching is done from the lowest point to the highest, sometimes in multiple passes. Directional sewing, like basting, takes extra time and is supposed to give a garment a nicer finish.
Can I do this for darts on pants? Mean from down to up.

I prefer to use a magnet made to hold pins. It's faster and if I drop my pins I just wave the magnet over the fallen pins and they go back onto the magnet. Make sure you have steel pins and not aluminum pins. The aluminum pins won't be picked up by the magnet. I don't know why anyone would want aluminum pins because they bend easy.

Generally when sewing the dart the opposite way you sew past the point a half inch to secure.
Why can’t it be marked with a marker pen instead, saving time?
Rebecca Wong I can’t speak for the instructor, but given the great expense and fineness of many couture-quality fabrics, it might be better not to risk marring or staining the fabric.
I marked my darts with a ball point pen in my first big project and my fabric is now slightly stained after washing it for the first time. Presumably that's why. Hope i can still get the stains out with some spot treatment and further washing.
It is actually more accurate to sew along a basting stitch than a marker (my experience).
I think the point is couture vs time saving hacks.
