Always thought McConaughey was a bit of a hollywood blow hard putting on the Texan thing as a bit of a show but now I want to read that book. Seems like a legitimate and genuinely decent bloke with a heart a gold a zest for life. Enjoyed the bit about stand ups being the truth tellers. Sad but true right now. Guess there isn't any corporate money involved to corrupt it!
As much as like him as an actor I don't think he would be able to pull of a stand up routine, perhaps a talk but stand up is a art form that needs to be perfected over time
As a young guy who is right wing in N Ireland who has been told they are a racist an a transphobe for just being a Conservative (the idea not the party) this really spoke to me
I remember reading a book by Tim Allen and being extremely surprised at his depth and articulate ability with complex ideas. After the last three interviews I seen of Matthew I suspect it will similarly be very enlightening. I think It's worth the read...
@@tessalee6253 I think he wrote 2 books. The one I referred to was "I'm Not Really Here" I think that was the title. Lots of references to quantum mechanics and "Zen and the art of motorcycle mechanics". A great read... The other one I managed to read about halfway before someone pinched it.👍
An audience with Matthew McConaughey. There used to be a show like that but it was with musicians. Usually the ones who have done it all, like Rod Stewart or Elton John.
"People don't appreciate context anymore" 16.40: A fantastic explanation about cancel culture and the incessant desire for oversimplification. It's far easier to throw people into a category of 'good' or 'bad' - so to say, "worth listening to" and "not worth listening to" - than to analyse someone and give them intrinsic respect (and also to consider that complexity exists, especially with these matters). Because shared respect shows that you're willing to listen, and in turn you say: "I'm willing to listen to you and risk being offended or wrong in the pursuit of absolute truth". As, after all, truth should always be the absolute driving factor for problem solving. Not winning the argument or proving someone wrong because that then transforms the issue from one of humanity to one of the self, the ego. To summarise: someone without respect of the ideology of absolute truth is subconsciously or consciously (the former being ignorance, the latter being malevolence) fighting for their interests; no matter how much they paint it as a movement of social justice or altruism. Why is it that we're seeing an increase in this form of 'SJW', for lack of a better term, mentality? I'm afraid it's something I haven't really delved into too much, but if I had to guess I would attribute it to decreased attention span due to the ineffable acceleration of the information age (the amount of information we take in each day is too much, essentially breaking down the circuitry that controls the input of it on a neurological level ) paired with the fact that it is so damn easy to be part of a movement and to have a voice courtesy of online platforms - the latter is no bad thing, but it goes without saying that we must tread with caution (imagine if someone with the mind of Hitler had access to social media)... So perhaps these are two factors: the first blocks out reasoning and promotes impatience and the second gives one an inflated sense of power, importance and opportunity. It's the age of self-proclamation. There used to be a time where to have a voice about a matter, especially one with weight, one would have to study along a rigorous path of trial and error, experiments, teachings, experience and ultimately a coming of maturity before they were deemed applicable for having their voice heard; status through proven respectability, so to speak. For better or for worse, we now live in an age where this means less and less, and subsequently a movement based primarily on pride is driven by people who don't even have a fundamental grasp on the movement they're advocating: it's about them, boredom, an urge to prove, to be right, their insecurities, a matter of feeling worth. How can you blame them? It's no easy task to find these things, when we're hopeless we become desperate, and when we're desperate we do illogical things - and I think this is at the root of the modern issue of a lack of desire for context. For someone to consider context is to consider the wider picture: a priori, for them it was never about that in the first place.

I haven't had the stomach to turn the TV on for over 2 years. You just reminded me, how much I miss the old days before every tv personalty hated half of their own nation.
lol i dont think theres ever been a time in history where there wasnt polarizing hate
I bet you are fun at parties...
same over here (UK)
@@jacksevert3099 If you think this is the way it's always been, you must be very young.
@@epictetus9221 if you dont think that then you're probably a child and thinks social media is the whole world
Matthew is a prime example that how you were raised as a child directly relates to how you will become as an adult.
"You have to have confrontation to have unity" - Love this quote a lot, I wrote it down
Brilliant conversation! You've made a new fan!
Russell, this was by far the most wholesome, funny, open, honest and thoroughly interesting interview I have ever watched. The questions you asked, the answers and the honesty from you both was heart warming to be honest. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and was genuinely disappointed when it ended! This was proper TV , proper journalism, and I am convince that you guys should so tour together dude! 10 out of 10. Thank you!
After my mom passed we gave a lot of her clothes to charities, it seems like not all of them made it to the charities.
LowlyGrinder Hehe...can’t unsee it now
Best comment I've ever seen
lol :) i scrolled down to the comments just to see what people were saying about the shirt
I wouldn't assume that. He probably shops there.

logically true.
Brilliant interview, sir. This expanded format is wonderful. Maybe make it a thing.
i've just discovered Russell Howard's interviews, and i am amazed. dude is a fantastic interviewer. i knew his stand-up, and i'd seen bits of his show, but interviews are new to me, and i'm disappointed i didn't know earlier.
Great interview. I love how Mathew says exactly what he is thinking.
Such an honest conversation, I needed that today. The way he grabs his pen - so relatable!
Yes 👏
that's an old trick people use to look and sound more authentic and authoritative.
Didn’t wake up this morning thinking I’d be thanking Matthew McConaughey for helping me realize that I am in fact ‘aggressively centric’.
And I didn't wake up this morning thinking that one of my favourite producers would be commenting on the content I love so much
There are very few celebs who i could watch being interviewed time and time again, and Mathew McConaughey is one of them. Comes across as such an intelligent, charismatic and approachable guy.
This was absofrickinlutely great!!! Its about time the way the public really feels is aloud on camera these days! Love the validation so i know im not crazy! Thank you!
Loved this open conversation between you guys...just open, objective, very down the earth kind of a way. No biasing, no need to politicize. Wanting to see the truth for what it is, and not for what we want it to be as opposed from the both spectrum of extreme thinkers these days. And god Interviewer, job well done :)
Not often do you get an actor so good (and funny), so honest, and with their heart in the right place. MM; you are amazing sir.
absolutely captivating conversation, really enjoyed it
This has been my favourite interview to date. Literally of all the ones I've ever seen, on TV, on the internet, in magazines... this tops them all.
I love how you interact with Matthew and Jordan peterson, you really hold your own and have so many good points! Really enjoyed this! Thank you!
Such a respectful interview. You can tell that Russell admires him and what a lovely guy Matthew is. A great interview
I listened to it on Audible and it was incredible listening. It was like listening to him play the screen play of his life.
These are the sort of interviews actors and celebraties want to have intellectual and thought provocing conversations instead of what's ur favourite food
I’d disagree to be fair. 99% of celebrities are either too dumb or too concerned about their image to have this conversation. This is a rare gem
The ones who are true artists will love it. A lot prefer to just play the PR game!
Seriously? You think this is intellectual? This is so shallow and trite. Definitely not thought provoking (note spelling) ... what is this deep idea here?
You asked them all did you?
@@DocnoXXX If you cant see that for yourself then you are a bit dim, or just pissed of at, well whatever you may be angry at. I truly hope you have a good day further though. One more thing, sometimes people need a layman's perspective and insight to what is going on around them to actually connect and think for themselves. Its not a bad thing.
one of the best interviews EVER...so insightful and real. thank you
Russell is a great interviewer. He should be doing this more on prime time tv
I rarely comment on the clips I consume on this platform, but this was absolute medicin for the soul. Thank you for this!
I didn’t even skip any this is 💯🙏🏽
You forget that this person is a very intelligent, centred, deep thinking, honest, value affirming human. You often forget that there are a lot of celebrities here in the UK, in the USA that are very very intelligent folks that talk a lot of sense. Unfortunately recently “celebs’ are fake, selfie obsessed folks that just spout nonsense and jump on the current popular bandwagon.... Good interview
He definitely cares a lot about people
He spouted a fair bit of nonsense himself to be honest
@@boomerhgt not really.
yeah true, he's genuine ... interesting and down to earth
Hes the exception to the rule unfortunately.
I am a full-time lurker on youtube, but I HAVE to say this is an amazing interview!
I'm gaining a lot of respect for Matthew McConaughey.
Forreal I thought he was an airhead. Quite the opposite!
Agreed, but what the shit is he wearing?

Thank you for letting me feel good about being in the Center.
I could listen to the two of you talk all day. Also, I'm so relieved and happy to hear I'm not alone in the center. This was a great conversation! *subscribed*
That..was..fantastic. A human conversation we need to listen to. It’s a glimpse of what we could be in these incredibly tensile times. Thank you guys.
"When people are lost in laughter, it's like a societal orgasm" is legitimately one of the greatest sentences I've heard on the topic.
Dunno wow I've only just learned that you exist, but I'm glad I did!!
And that moment, when Matthew gets in the right headspace for saying his line shows a consumate artist.
The way he got himself there sent shivers through my spine. It's like I was watching it the first time.
Absolutely cracking interview. Some real food for thought. Totally agree that context is all too often left out of modern discourse. More interviews like this please, Russell!
This is the best interview he's done on this tour!!!
This was a genuinely heartwarming interview
Absolutely the best McConaghey interview ever!!!! You two could have carried on for a month and I'd have stayed with it!!! Thanks be to whoever came up with the idea to get you two fascinating, articulate beauties in the same virtual room!!!!
I really enjoyed Russell's interview approach. Not many interviewers allow the guest to speak without being constantly interrupted.
Great conversation
What a great interview, best I've seen in a long time...Reminded me of two long lost mates catching up.
Sincerely Russell...this is one of the best interviews bloody ever!!! x
I think i just lost my absolute MIND that was the best thing i have ever watched - the two of you are both some of the most interesting people on earth
This is a really great, unfiltered interview. Thanks for posting in its entirety
One minute left and this brought me oh so much joy. Deep thanks to both of you!
Wow I put this on for a quick look see and I could not stop listening. I'm very grateful for the enrichment.
When you're speaking about laughing in the face of adversity and time of crisis, just watch any military group! I'm ex-Royal Navy and we used to make jokes and laugh at stuff that would make a lot of people's toes curl! You both nailed it by saying it doesn't detract from the topic but enables a way of dealing with it!

I would love to talk to Matthew as someone who grew up similarly and is going through a midlife crisis lmao. I think he'd actually have great perspective. I lived in Austin my whole life even and always missed him hahaha. Love this, thanks Russell!!
That was fantastic. MM is one of my favorite actors. Hands down. It was really nice to hear his thoughtful reflections. I hope to see more of his work. And you Russell. I hope to see you in a movie soon.
This is the interview I didn’t know I needed
This is everything, I look for a in a great conversation.
No ego, intelligent banter.
You question where you stand in the world, all while throwing in some jokes.
Matthew always gives a great interview.
Matt is the best man in Hollywood. Love that he has the stones to stand for what he believes.
I would absolutely love for MM to do live stand-up shows! He has the charisma, complexity and compassion to win over crowds anywhere he goes!
I was thinking the same. He would sell out arenas in seconds. He has the style, and the character to pull off a wonderful show.
As much as like him as an actor I don't think he would be able to pull of a stand up routine, perhaps a talk but stand up is a art form that needs to be perfected over time
Another excellent interview, it's amazing, I didn't know I could love this guy anymore.
Russell has gone way up in my estimation. This is a better format than his stand up. Suits him.
As a young guy who is right wing in N Ireland who has been told they are a racist an a transphobe for just being a Conservative (the idea not the party) this really spoke to me
Stay strong and true to yourself man.
I didn’t know you folks in Ireland were dealing with the same problems we were here in the states.

Victimization? What are you talking about? Do you even know what that word means?
I remember reading a book by Tim Allen and being extremely surprised at his depth and articulate ability with complex ideas. After the last three interviews I seen of Matthew I suspect it will similarly be very enlightening.
I think It's worth the read...
@@tessalee6253 I think he wrote 2 books. The one I referred to was "I'm Not Really Here" I think that was the title. Lots of references to quantum mechanics and "Zen and the art of motorcycle mechanics". A great read... The other one I managed to read about halfway before someone pinched it.👍
I would absolutely love to see Matthew do a show where we just hear his stories and then have a conversation with him.
"Aggressively Centric" absolutely couldn't agree more with Matthew
I took a trip based on a wet dream as well. Unfortunately I can’t write about it. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.
