As a MacBook Air 15 owner, the only reason (and it’s a very good reason) to buy the Air over the new 14” MacBook Pro M3 is the Air’s fanless design. Fan’s are often the first thing to give trouble in a computer. They draw air into the computer, exposing the circuitry to dust, moisture and salt if you live by the coastline. They are the only mechanical moving components in a computer so it makes sense to eliminate them if possible.
I went from my MacBook Air Intel 2020 to MacBook Air 15 inch 24gb ram & 256 SSD and it was absolute game changer and with it for me! I have iCloud+ and external hard drive for the storage and with the 24gb ram it will last me a long time and love how it’s lightweight even though it has a bigger screen. Note: for anyone that says “24gb ram is overkill” I use a gaming monitor and connect a lot of cables for Ethernet and HDD drive which goes up to 13-17gb ram in use and with No overload whatsoever and haven’t had it over heat not once! I freaking love it I don’t think I need to explain further of why I decided to go with 24gb ram RAM > Storage
Really you need to add $200 to the price of the 15” to get it to 512GB of storage like the new M3 Base pro. This make it a $100 difference for the screen and extra ports
Do remember however that a 512GB Air is now cheaper from third parties and Apple refurbished, so you’re saving hundreds of dollars if you go with the 15” either way
Thanks for the comparison. Helpful, except for the unclear discussion of ports near the beginning, which seems geared towards those who already know what ports the two machines have.
I think refurbished M1 Pro and M1 Max MBP is much better option than either, it comes with more RAM and higher memory bandwidth, albeit the performance is somewhat similar to M3 regular
I agree, but at least here in the UK, it hasn’t been in stock on the Apple refurbished site for months. I know Amazon and eBay probably still have them but you have to be a little more weary about the condition and battery health if you shop from there, so I wish Apple refurbished still had the M1 Pro in stock.
The 14” Pro only weighs 40 grams 15” Air and despite being thicker feels more portable. For the same spec 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD the price of the M3 14” is only AU$200 more in Australia. And you get all the nice stuff, better screen, better speakers, SD card reader. I’ve looked at them side by side and IMO you’d be nuts to buy the M2 15” Air right at the moment unless prices start to widen more over time.
Maybe in Australia. Here in the states i just picked up a 1TB/16GB 15 Air for $1600. The same price as the base pro. I could say the same picking up the pro. With no fan, no contest. You would be crazy to get a base pro.
I am eyeing on MBA 15’ base (1190$ where I live) and MBP M1 Pro 14’ with 1T storage (1499$). I plan on keeping the laptop for 5years from now. Which one do you suggest? Also, should I be waiting for the M3 air 15’ instead? (I’m office worker, doing very basic stuff, but thinking that the MBP M1 pro might better future proof)
I am concidering getting the 15” M2 Air (512gb) for $1249.00 & mainly going to use it for DJ’ing & editing 4K GoPro videos. Not editing that crazy, basic editing. I also don’t care about the rendering time. Do you think the it’s sufficient enough to do that?? I like the bigger screen…especially for DJing because I’m a little further away from Laptop. But I also don’t want to miss out on the M3 chip. I plan on keeping this laptop for 4-5 years and don’t want to be to far behind in technology. I don’t know which one I should get. Also…do you have any guess when they’re going to release the M3 Air?
M3 Air should launch in the spring if I were to guess, and for basic editing it should fine. If you can, I would try and get 16GB to help with longevity though.
On one hand i like the sleeker design of the air and the slightly bigger screen. The 16gb and 500gb version is about the same price as the m3 8gb version but that has a 120hz an newer chip and more ports. If i chose the 16gb m2 will it outperform the m3 8gb?
Depends on what you do, but 16GB will help the Mac age better either way so I don’t think it’s a bad option to go with. Definitely look around on Apple’s refurbished site too, you might be able to get a 16/512 configuration for even less.
I understand that too - I am comparing them for those in the market for a new Mac who might be cross shopping between these two. If you have a 15” M2 Air rn, ofc you shouldn’t upgrade
@@SaranByte Agree. I have an 2013 MBA and am looking forward to upgrade (The battery died and replacements have not worked as expected). So I am indeed looking between options. comparing these 2 is very helpful.

I have the 15 “ also space grey
That’s a very good point

Does the laptop get heated quicker since it doesn’t have fans? Or is it more slow because it doesn’t have fans?

The holes on the speaker grill on the pro are a façade. The speakers are in the palm underneath the solid sheet of metal.

as a person who prefers a bigger screen and only use word to do work, air is a better choice!
as a person with a 16 inch macbook pro, the 14 inch macbook pro is better
M2 MacBook Air 15 + 16GB Ram upgrade
Yeah that would be the ideal configuration imo

Which spec m1 air do you use to edit 4k videos and watch yt videos, also from the UK, keep up with the solid work on the channel 👍
if im upgrading both to 16gb ram and 512gb which one would be more worth
Does mini led really makes a difference in watching movies ?
Yes
Yes I would say so. But try and go see one in person and judge for yourself

In my opinion, you get better value from the 15 inch M2 Air than the 14 inch M3 Pro. Bigger screen, no noise from fan, less expensive.
If you can find it for less than retail price, then yes that’s a very good deal
More 1 inch with ssd 256

Of those two, everyone should skip them and go for the 14" M2 instead.
YES! Thanks you. I said exactly the same thing. 14" Mac Pro should have come with 12gb RAM.
the m3 isnt targeted at ppl who own m2s, its for ppl with intels and m1 users. i thoguht this was understood

The M2 is end-of-life, it'd be silly to get that now.
The 15 inch m2 came out 4 months ago
