The definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy, “Lightyear” follows the legendary Space Ranger after he’s marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew. As Buzz tries to find a way back home through space and time, he’s joined by a group of ambitious recruits and his charming robot companion cat, Sox. Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda.
The film features the voices of Chris Evans as accomplished Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear, Uzo Aduba as his commander and best friend Alisha Hawthorne and Peter Sohn as Sox. Keke Palmer, Taika Waititi and Dale Soules lend their voices to the Junior Zap Patrol’s Izzy Hawthorne, Mo Morrison and Darby Steel, respectively, and James Brolin can be heard as the enigmatic Zurg. The voice cast also includes Mary McDonald-Lewis as onboard computer I.V.A.N., Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Commander Burnside, Efren Ramirez as Airman Diaz, and Keira Hairston as Young Izzy. Directed by Angus MacLane (co-director “Finding Dory”), produced by Galyn Susman (“Toy Story That Time Forgot”) and featuring a score by award-winning composer Michael Giacchino (“The Batman,” “Up”), “Lightyear” opens only in cinemas on June 17, 2022.

If everyone knew Zurg was his father, Pixar should have used this to their advantage to make their journey meaningful. Heck, his dad could have "died" in some way, only to show up in Zurg armor that keeps him bearly alive. Zurg itself could have been an AI robot using his father for something. This way you have a father and son journey, perfect for "Fathers Day".

Who knows maybe he might even kill future Buzz for stealing his stuff and show that he doesn’t fuck around.

Can you imagine, if Zurg had been Buzz father, it could've given such a ground for his villany, Zurg being mad how command treated Buzz, how they gave up on searching for him. All he wanted was get revenge on those who wronged Buzz in his eyes, and when he finally got Buzz back, be so blinded and mad with years of resentment, he couldn't let it all go.
Something along those lines, and given the whole father reveal such an impact, would've been amazing, following original Toy Story reveal, but make it their own

I wonder how many scenes they scrapped when they decided to change the twist.
I mean we all know what was said in Toy Story 2, but even then they would have had to foreshadow Buzz's father at least once (or have him be on the same planet and somehow survive the 62 years before Sox perfected the hyper fuel), and somehow explained how he had all this technology.

Like father like son, he got mad only Buzz was doing it, and he tried to do it, something went wrong, and people thought he had died, but in truth, he survived. And Buzz was told when he came back, his father had died in a failed attempt.
In the accident he travelled forward in time, found a way, to travel back, from the legacy of Buzz, having succeeded later down the line, so he had the tech to replicated it all. Went back to when Buzz supposedly managed to do it all, but history had been lied to, and Buzz was treated as a criminal.
Furious he went back, to the timeline the movie is set in, to save Buzz from commander douche, and his emotions took over. Making him become a tyrant, from the noble goal of saving his son, to becoming a tyrant, it can happen

The issue with Zurg being a older buzz is we never see any evil from Buzz in really anyway, he hates rookies yet never yells or is mean to them just dismissive. He also completely hates robots with the exception of Socks who he for some reason seemed to like immediately, and despite the fact that yes he is obsessive with his mission he never showed aggression enough to be Zurg.

Yeah we get the stuff about how a few minutes for Buzz flying is years for everyone else but that's not the same thing. Just one or two lines in passing alluding to the possibility or have Sox say something when they get back could've fixed it but as it stands it just feels like it comes out of no where.

@@FlicksAndTheCity Of course Zurg being Buzz's father is obvious.
If you're gonna make a film that claims to be in the same universe as Toy Story that directly inspired the Buzz Lightyear and Zurg figures, In that case, it should follow the rules of what's already been established and not gaslight the audience into second-guessing themselves.
There was still plenty of mystery to explain Zurg as Buzz's father, his motives, and how he ended up in that position but now we're left with more questions like "why did Buzz think Zurg killed his father in the first place?", and "why would Zurg tell buzz he was his father?" even as a trick wouldn't have made sense since he already had the upper hand and these toys believe they're the actual characters.
If they just wanted to make a movie based on the toys then they could have done that without placing it in the Toy Story universe but by saying it's the film Andy watched as a kid now they've created expectations that the film won't live up to and hope fans will just accept it, unfortunately, I'm one of those lunatic who reads too much into this. 😂😂😂

Just change a few things around, and don't pretend like that is a real twist. Hell, what if buzz was still split in time and one version went into the past. He could have saved his own father from a tragedy, and then his father would turn evil from something in the split. So the Buzz that was split from them would wake up in a world where his father is alive and evil because of him.

  • @Looong_Dog
    @Looong_Dog Год назад +21

Honestly, Zurg revealing to be a Buzz from the future is much less satisfying than Zurg being Buzz's father. Yeah, it would be "obvious" but overcomplicating a villian adds unecessary levels of confusion that always lessens the value and "threat" of the villian. Easy and simple villians usually leave a bigger impact than a villian with a purposely made complicated past. Just let Zurg be; Zurg! Just let him BE evil cause thats how he always was, such as Hercale in Luca; he was always mean cause thats the way he always was, they didn't had to dedicated an entire backstory to explain why he acts like this. Zurg being Future Buzz deminishes the character that has been built up in Toy Story 2 and Star Command.
Sometimes an obvious villian; is the best villian

I actually prefer alternate Buzz as Zerg. I know a lot of the dislike is that "he wasn't evil enough cause he was nice," and I don't think it's about him being "evil." In the movie before Buzz takes time to be on the planet and to see the lives on the planet, he has a fixed perception that everyone is miserable, his best friend is no longer a space ranger hero, they're stuck with nowhere to go, and it's his fault. He was so focused on his mistakes that he didn't see the truth at first, everyone wasn't miserable anymore, his best friend may not have been a space hero but she was a hero mom and grandma who found love BECAUSE he made a mistake, they were no longer stuck and miserable but made the best of their situation and were pretty content and happy, and it was his mistake that made something good in the end.
I think its actually a really wonderful and clever representation of the two paths we can choose take. If we just focus on our mistakes, our shortcomings, and put too much on ourselves that's when we become "evil Buzz." We miss all of the good that can come from a mistake, the things learned, and we can miss learning how to make the best of a situation and learning to live and move forward rather than stay stagnant and tunnel visioned. We don't see "evil" in our Buzz because he took the time to look around him, and had friends to point out the good things (the lesson of not carrying everything alone). Alternate Buzz didn't have that, he remained so focused on how he messed up that he convinced himself everyone was miserable because of his mistake, and over time that is what made him "evil" (we just don't see that transformation).
When you focus solely on the negatives you become a negative, when you choose to see the positives no matter how small they may be at first you become a positive. Our Buzz took the positive path, accepting his failure but seeing the good that did manage to come from that. Alternate Buzz took the negative path, he refused to see any positives because he had so fully convinced himself that the situation was so bad nothing good could ever come from it. We see at moments where Buzz could have fallen victim to the same desires as Alternate Buzz (losing the gem, broken ship), but luckily our Buzz had made some friends who helped him see the positives (meat sandwich scene is funnily enough a good example for this).
The split in the time line is the choice we make as people. We can choose to dwell on all we have failed upon, or we can choose to look for the good that can come from the situation. We can choose to be Zurg or we can choose to be Buzz.

Buzz started out as a sympathetic but flawed character, and out Buzz had a hard pass before he was redeemed, avoiding his shortcomings before a *too* costly mistake was made.
Evil Buzz wasn't redeemed, he was the fulfilled failure potential our Buzz had, and we can see it in the movie.
We like our Buzz in part because for all his faults, he took time to make an effort and change. But if he didn't, I can totally see him as the antagonist. Evil Buzz' story is just as valid as good Buzz.

To be honest I think Zurg being Buzz's father would've made more sense then Zurg being Buzz from an alternate time line. Not only because it would've been a call back to Toy Story 2 but it would've made sense on why Buzz wanted to become a space ranger like wanting to follow in his dad's footsteps. And the reason why he was taken maybe due to being stranded for years or some A.I. taking him for their own reasons.

You know, in the early 2000's tv series Zerg had incredibly subtle hints to being related too. His weird obsession with killing buzz and stealing his partner could just be seen as a bad guy thing, but when he created an evil clone (zzub) which failed, he treated the child like he was his dad briefly.
When he met an alternative version of buzz from another dimensions (inverted one where good is evil and evil is good) he started getting impressed by him and even wanted to treat him as family. It wasn't obvious but the very subtle hints were there without flat out saying it.
Also if anyone wanted to know what the alternative dimension Zerg was like. He was a good guy who worked at a diner as a waiter. Nice guy, even forgive bullies because he's so nice; weird huh? Nothing like the bad guy in the show.

People would've been very satisfied even if it wasn't surprising as it was already established. It would've been fan service and a respect to the people who watched the first Pixar film franchise. Very few people would've complained about it. If they wanted to make something new, they should've not used Buzz as the main character as Buzz already has an established storyline. If they would've just used the story given by Buzz on Toy Story, even if it felt something like Star Wars, it would've been good. Even more so by the fact that Disney now owns both Star Wars and Toy Story.

In my view (and I will *never* stop saying it!):
Zurg does NOT = Old Buzz!
Everything involving him showcased him as a robot, and that's how I saw him as well.
The father thing, while I didn't know it as a kid - despite being a former Vader fan, was a spinoff. Even the Star Command scene was clearly a joke (and I never saw that particular scene before).
The one in TS2 put in more thought though, with Buzz and Zurg playing catch.
The deleted robots...I would've killed for them! Obviously I have a robot/mech bias (I am a droid), but those designs would've been fun to see, whether they were neutral or on either the Space Ranger or Zurg's side.
The mecha hound would be cool, but the scene could easily become too dark for younger viewers, but idk. I am pretty sure live action Lion King literally showed Scar eating something and had actual blood on his mouth. Yet, it was still PG (although nothing else really made it necessary to boost ratings anyway, plus I may had just been seeing things; my vision isn't good).
Also, the scene of the Zyclops just chilling would've been adorable. I can see them just hanging out, all calm...Then Zurg calls and *Kill Mode Activate*.
I also like the thought of the green aliens worshipping The Claw and meeting Zurg...Before possibly being crushed by his far superior Claw. :P Idk, that thought just amuses me - it doesn't have to be in the movie.
I admit to being most peeved about Zurg's being another case of "creature in a suit" in this, though. All of my favorite robotic villains end this way. Vader? Former deranged human under a mask. Skulker (Danny Phantom)? Tiny ghost slime thing in awesome suit.
It seems like only Star Wars Droids are the only ones who get to be pure robots, and of course, they're the more "disposable" villains/characters. Excluding General Grievous, who is a cyborg. Which that will be accepted since cyborgs don't mean full on robots.
TLDR, they did my fave Disney villain wrong. Zurg will forever be an awesome robot in my view and no one will say otherwise.

Why even have there be a twist behind Zurg's identity in the first place? Why not just let him be this enigmatic alien that forms an intense rivalry with Buzz naturally, throughout the story? Having him turn out to be an alternate version of Buzz himself completely erases Zurg as a character because it isn't really him. I've also never particularly liked his design in the film; maybe it's just me but the whole 'giant scary robot' thing has zero personality.

Zurg being an older Buzz made sense for the story being told and it had the most narrative value. Making him Buzz' father, as stated by the team, would have felt too obvious. Especially since the whole "Im your father" was just a Star Wars riff in the first place, not meant to be taken seriously. Buzz started the movie as a person who cared more about the mission than the people. In order for him to grow, he had to confront himself. This version of Zurg was an older Buzz who's only focused on the mission and is not concerned with how he does it because he's convinced that his actions won't matter since everything will be undone once he succeeds. Our Buzz becomes a man who realizes that you can't move forward if you're stuck trying to fix every mistake you made in the past. Sometimes you just have to learn from the mistake and move on.

The thing about people knowing that Zurg is Buzz's father is that it can still work to your advantage.
Imagine if Buzz is systematically dismantling Zurg's forces using his team of rookies, and there are subtle hints that Zurg is trying to reach out to Buzz to talk to him. But instead, Buzz completely defeats him and cripples him.
Then it's revealed that Buzz's father froze himself to find his son in the future. He became "evil" because he discovered time travel and figured he could return his son to the past to reunite their family and no one in the present matters, thus Buzz's father not caring if he kills innocents.
And the thing is, Zurg doesn't have to be randomly evil. There could be hints, he could be the stereotypical father who's controlling and forced his son into sports and stuff. Thing is, Buzz actually excelled. Zurg is one of the few bad fathers who actually got what he wanted.
Which means as soon as Buzz disobeys him, IE. standing up to him and not letting him kill his new friends, Zurg goes off on him.
As previously mentioned, Buzz defeats Zurg before he discovers he's his father. Once he does discover it, we see a heartbreaking scene where Buzz regrets having mercilessly destroyed Zurg's forces and previously ignored Zurg's messages of wanting to meet him (believing it to be a trap).
Then Zurg leans more into the evil as he tries to force Buzz to join him in returning to the past together.

Although I don’t mind that they made Zurg future Buzz, I think it would’ve been better if they had him be his father. Even if you make the argument everyone would see it coming, there’s a simple solution to the issue:
Don’t make it a twist villain.
First, have the father established earlier in the film. A flashback scene to Buzz’s days at the Academy would be a clever way of introducing.
Second, later on in the film introduce Zurg. In the scene make him an intimidating mystery figure as he is betrayed during the first half of the film.
Third, The third time we see him his identity is revealed when he tries to get Buzz to join him. The scene clip of pay homage to Star Wars and Toy Story 2. Maybe up to this point, several civilians were killed during Zurg’s takeover and Buzz had came to the conclusion that his father was one of those casualties. However he was wrong.
This reveal would be somewhere in the first third of the film so that Zurg would have the remainder of the film to be the big bad.
Sure there is a small twist but it’s a very brief one that still allows him to have his time in the spotlight.

Wait....I do like the idea of Buzzs obsession over the mission taking him to the dark side...But I think everyone was expecting it to be his Dad. Why would you bother making a twist when the whole idea of this is that its what made Andy want the toy? That doesn't really make any sense. You could have gotten the same emotional Arc for Buzz and his Father about the Mission by making Buzz one of the Firstborne on the new planet and his Dad just kept instilling the idea of Greatness and being the one to perform all the test flights Buzz did.

0:29 I don't think the hyperspace broke the timeline rather when the bus from the original timeline got back and was going to be reprimanded like he said and travel so far into the future, he was then able to travel back with the technology he found and traveled a week before himself got back from the last hyper space test therefore erasing what originally happening to him

I agree. It drives me up a fucking wall that they cared more about surprising people than keeping true to the lore that was already established.I do understand that Zurg being Buzz’s father was just a throw away joke but but if this is supposed to be a parody of Star Wars then they should’ve stuck with that. Also it’s okay to have predictable twist in movies especially considering the fact that Lightyear is a kids movie.

The thumbnail with Sox as Zurg would've been perfect. Future Sox could've lost Buzz and rebuilt himself into Zurg to honor his last wish and make this version of Buzz a space ranger again.

Something I heard as a writer, is if the audience knows what's going to happen next, or the "twist". Then you can still present that event in an unexpected way.

It would have been better to have the Rookie from the beginning becoming Zurg. He becomes obsessed of becoming better than Lightyear, whom he blames for crashing the ship and the Space Rangers are obsolete. So he builds robots but Burnside thinks he is crazy. He’s banished from Star Command after he attempt a coup, discovers aliens (the little green men) and forces them to use their technology to concur Star Command. When Zurg opens he’s robot suit, Buzz would recognize him from the baby eyes

This movie absolutely demands a sequel (though im sure we wont get one any time soon.) The original leaves so much of buzz’s established story out. Wheres the aliens? The galactic alliance? The interplanetary travel?
So much still to explore. Lightyear barely scratched the surface.
A “the claw” reference would have been funny too.

MacLane screwed up this take on Buzz Lightyear. "Lightyear" wasn't a campy, sci-fi action/disaster film that would spawn silly Buzz Lightyear and Emperor Zurg toys as you see in the "Toy Story" universe and spark Andy's love of the character. Zurg should have stayed Buzz's father as the reveal was SUPPOSED to be a ripoff on Star Wars. That was the joke in TS2. MacLane didn't understand "Toy Story" lore and should not have been picked as the director here. Plus, why would Andy's Buzz toy have a different voice than from the movie he supposedly saw, again, IN THE 90's?!!

    • @antiloser-NFS
      @antiloser-NFS Год назад

The toy could easily have a different voice. It has happened in real life where a different person records the lines used in the toy. I do agree that this movies is not the movie Andy saw as a kid.

Wished theyde have kept zurgs cape atleast and maybe one of the characters with a bionic arm. I feel like the scene of showing how buzz became a space ranger wouldve been good but could always be saved for a spinoff series or a second movie. I can certainly see they referenced buzz lightyear of star command quite a bit however with things like zurgs smaller rocket design, the forcefield around the ranger base just like in star command and the colour of the robots that make them look similar to the hornets design. Hopefully this means we may get some more buzz tv shows or films in the future and maybe even, hopefully, a woodys roundup show though highly unlikley due to the voice actors saying they wouldnt come back for another film unless it was fantastic/groundbreaking.

  • @walkingcubkid

Okay, zurg is not buzz’s father. Because right after that fight with buzz and Zurg, buzz looks like he went crazy, and so did zurg. So I’m pretty sure they went a bit crazy during their fight. And the buzz from the future twist wasn’t really good either.
