  • From its beginning in 2012, the Winnipeg southwest transitway has grown to a network of over 13 stations, spanning 11 kilometres (7 miles). This animated video takes you through the timeline of when new stations were opened, forming the Blue rapid transit network that we know today.

      @@roachtoasties this city is too bureaucratic to get anything done. I really wish we had LRT in Winnipeg. But I understand the city cannot manage its money anyway, so, that's out of the picture.

      They have always thought in the present and they never think about the future. Once you have so many buses running on a transit way, it essentially just becomes a LRT in the end.

    I was born and raised in Winnipeg, they really missed an opportunity in building a rail transit system back in the 1980’s. They’ve fumbled the bag so hard on this, they done so many consultations on adding rail transit that never amount to nothing. You know how much it would cost to build a rapid rail or light rail transit today? Probably in the billions, back then it would’ve costed at least a couple hundred million but not with todays rising costs.
    Also, why is the bus transit way for the south end? Such a missed opportunity.

    I've been in several Canadian cities, and of any city over 500,000 people, Winnipeg has, by far, the WORST rapid transit system in the country. And that even includes Ottawa, and their disastrous O-Line.

Bloomington was supposed to open in late 2020/early 2021 so the joke was that VU already finished the video (since its like the last Canadian video he had to update outside Alberta), and he was doing smaller system with not much to them to bide his time. Now we know that Bloomington has been delayed for who knows how long.

    In the future, there might be added a transitway into the Eastern Area of Winnipeg. From Downtown to Transcona for the rapid transitway. We should have a streetcar in our Cities than a transit bus.

    • @TheOwenMajor
      @TheOwenMajor 3 года назад +1

      There won't be. The city has scrapped all future plans for transitways.
      And now with decreasing ridership and no more provincial funding, I don't see those plans being upgraded.
      I agree with their current plan, change the routes to improve frequency and speed.

    • @TheOwenMajor
      @TheOwenMajor 3 года назад +2

      And street cars are the worst of both worlds. They don't have the flexibility and affordability of buses, and they don't have the capacity or speed of light rail.

      With the people currently in Government, don't hold your breath on that one. The "dog leg" route was such a disappointment. It's still probably faster to take an express bus along Pembina Hwy, than to veer off into suburban F
      ort Garry. I though the whole point of rapid transit, was to built a line what will be "rapid" and save time. It would have helped if they built it parallel along Pembina, where many seniors and low income people (who actually ride transit) live.

    I think doing light rail would have been far better than this short busway. It's rapid transit on the cheap. You start with one light rail line and add from there. Busways all over the city is impractical and will never happen. Los Angeles has also stuck in some busways, where it should have been light rail. Dumb for the long term.

    I wish Vancouver had a transit way. Buses and trolleys share the streets with cars. Vancouver is also the last city in BC to have electric trolleys powered by an overhead catenary system. If Vancouver had a transit way, the streets would be less congested. But at least Vancouver has a light rail system in the form of the SkyTrain
