      My favorites have been the older M&K THX models. Maybe the s150? And the Klipsch THX ultra system. Granted this was in a front projection setup. Also at times they were almost too loud! But those systems truly gave me that big Cinema experience.

      @@andrewrobinsonreviews hey Andrew, first I’d like to thank you for all that you do! 🙏🏽
      I recently bought the entire 7 speaker set up from SVS Ultra with the towers, ultra center , 2surrounds, 2 prime heights and a PC2000 sub. Powered by the Denon 4700
      I’m looking for true cinema type sound. I haven’t received them yet but now I’m starting to have second thoughts lol.
      You just introduced the B&W cinema system and it’s about $1500 per speaker lol.
      In your opinion, which system would sound more like a commercial theater? Have you heard the SVS ultra towers and center speaker system! Should I return it and get the B&W cinema speakers you mentioned in this video. Once again, I truly love your channel and thank you. I listen to you and Youthman religiously.
      Current system
      B&W 686-S2 for LR
      B&W HTM-62-S2 center
      Pv1D subwoofer from B&W
      B&W M1 satellites for surrounds. I loved this set up but never felt I was getting cinematic sound. Thank you so much for reading my post.

    I'm glad I'm not the only one having trouble understanding dialogue in modern films. I can watch old movies all day and not have a problem with dialogue, but new mixes frequently have me asking "What did they say?" or rewinding and putting on subtitles. I'm using a calibrated home theater as well. And no, this isn't for every movie of course, but many new ones have this issue.

    I can't speak to "value" but--Kristi & Andrew--you might enjoy the Arendal 1723 speaker line. So far, I've only bought their Center 1723 THX Monitor and a single 1723 Subwoofer 2S. Only received these a few days ago but I've all but decided to keep these and order 2 of the 1723 THX Monitor for left & right. They weigh as though cast iron, being built with high-density cabinetry and many other good things! Their cabinet sizes are best described as "large"--Here's a quick quote of their site
    "All 1723 speakers passed the THX Ultra Certification without any change to the products, meaning our standards already exceed THX Ultra level out of the box!" The dialog clarity and transcendant bass seem to meet what I was hoping for end game speakers.

      Andrew & Kristi, happy new year! Since you mentioned several times in this review your previous career as cinema sound track engineer, would you care to mention the films, or are there NDAs involved? 😉 BTW, I quite like your response to the hair shirt audiophile’s generic proclamation that the polar dispersion pattern of horizontally oriented MTM must categorically exclude them from use as shown throughout most of your video - without having heard this system. But then, that’s kinda what tribal audio / videophiles sometimes do; as Randy the cheapaudioman has noted “we” can be full of crap.

    So glad you two brought up the dialog problem. From one streaming movie to another I have to adjust the volume to understand the dialog. Sometimes even if I crank it way up I still can't understand it clearly. It's particularly frustrating when the actors are whispering. Perhaps we need to start a petition to have movies ascribe to a standard where dialog is discernable by everyone.

    These speakers are giving me "Atlantic Technology" vibes. I used to own the matching 8200 LCR speakers that were great for home theater. AT also had the 6200 and 4200 series. Their newest line is the 8600 series. AT has been around for decades. In the 80's I bought one of their first products which was a black box with 2 satellite speakers. The Box contained the bass, power and preamp and powered the satellites. It was a stereo system, not home theater. Why not give Atlantic Technology a look?

    You got it spot on, every speaker has to be the same and I can't believe people still build Frankenstein systems with fragmented soundstage...3 simple steps to a 2/channel, multi channel and HC system ... 1 : purchase the best full range CLRs you can afford. 2 : match the speaker with its own monoblock. 3 : repeat steps 1 and 2 as required...

    • @justinlaird
      @justinlaird 2 года назад

      I do not believe this is necessary always the case. Many manufacturers specifically design speakers for certain applications and timbre match within their own line. While having all the same obviously makes sense and works perfectly, it’s not required

    • @Echo-jg8is
      @Echo-jg8is 2 года назад +1

      @@justinlaird Same drivers in a different box means different sound. Same box with different drivers means different sound not to mention the different impedance, sensitivity, balance, soundstage, frequency response and power handling you inherit...pink noise generator often reveals this problem as does listening to a tower and a centre as a stereo pair, or a bipole and a in-wall ceiling speaker...room correction is now a requirement but doing it this way is simple, it's modular plus you can often bypass all room EQ for the CLRs in predictable rooms...keep it simple imoa

    • @justinlaird
      @justinlaird 2 года назад

      @@Echo-jg8is again you’re not wrong, obviously any change will result in technical differences, I’m just saying that having a system with dipole speakers, say Klipsch reference premiere and floor standing for the L and R from the same line are designed to work together. So yes you’re 100% spot on when you say they aren’t the same but the differences when matched correctly are very very small and virtually indistinguishable when set up properly

    For Tenet, Nolan said that he uses very little overlap in the center channel dialog on purpose, but with a solid set up and mix, you have no issue with intelligibility of the dialog encouraging people to go to the theater. The interesting thing is that if you watch Tenet on stereo speakers, without a locked in center image, dialog is hard to pull out of the mix. There is an almost charming arrogance to Nolan's cinema-first mentality these days with even budget home systems performance levels. I naturally used Tenet as a test when I updated my system a few months back; it was a bit nerve wracking hitting play that first go.

    I use 30+ years old speakers for my home cinema setup. Front 2x Bowers & Wilkins V202, Rear 2x Bowers & Wilkins V201, Center Bowers & Wilkins CC6 and a Jamo SUB210. All connected on a Onkyo TX-NR626.
    Although all the equipement is not the most high end speakers or a top level receiver I'm very happy with my system.
    Audyssey did a great job (because the strange the werd shape of my room.
    The only tweak was a little bit more sub and some more center. I forgot my front high, those are little Philips bookshelf speakers with ribbon tweeter.

    I'm not sure that I have heard cinema speakers outside of commercial cinemas. And to be honest, going to a commercial theater relies heavily on the care of its employees and ownership (which often puts me off them altogether). My question for Andrew is what was the 5th speaker model that you enjoyed as much as the mentioned cinema style speakers?

    • @andrewrobinsonreviews
      @andrewrobinsonreviews  2 года назад +2

      I was wondering when someone was going to notice and/or ask about that 5th speaker setup. The 5th speaker system that makes the list consisted of five Tekton Pendragon monitors, and a Tekton Cinema Sub mated to an RBH 1212 subwoofer as well. It was a BIG setup that I hid (mostly) behind a 120" acoustically transparent screen. But that rig rocked!

    • @umrryan
      @umrryan 2 года назад

      @@andrewrobinsonreviews thanks for the response. As a former long-term projector user, I still entertain the thought of a future acoustically transparent screen down the line. At the moment, I still don't love the choices for budget 4k projectors, so I'm going to keep sitting really close to the x90j.

    1. Kristi’s first question was my exact question. I have an 18’x19’ room, so I think I might actually like the bulkier Transpuls for LCR and maybe even all 5 or 7 if I wanted to be crazy.
    2. Dialogue seems to be an issue for me on pretty much any streaming service unless I’m listening at -15db or higher. As a result I’m usually boosting the center channel anywhere from 5 to 12db.

    Very enjoyable review, Andrew.
    Personally, I’m more of a home cinema guy than out and out 2-channel, so practical but less than visually appealing speakers are fine with me. You have a very stylish and homely main room (pictured in the video), so they perhaps look a little bland; however, in a darkened theatre room, they would be much more at home. :-)
    As others have said, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Arendal Sound speaker range. I switched from 12 years of Bowers and Wilkins speakers to Arendal Sound and am thoroughly impressed. I’m running mine as part of a 7.4.4 setup in a dedicated space.

    Ah, the CT 700's. The only set of B&W anything I ever truly loved. I never had the space to use them properly so it was only at Audio Advice in Charlotte or an associate of my dad who had the acoustically transparent screen you mention i his home theater with the CT 700's behind it that I heard them. But I've never felt more like I was at whatever concert was being played or immersed in whatever movie was on display. The M&K I only heard on display as a music set up oddly enough with their old push/pull subwoofers which remain some of the best subs I've ever heard but they were not in the proper set up to compare to the CT 700'S. I can imagine a full suite of Tekton double impact HT kit would be amazing but require an enormous amount of space as would the JTR speakers. I'll never be into home theater enough to justify the resources to make that sort of investment but it's fun to visit those that do every once in a while.

    I totally agree in the way dialogues are poorly mixed in some recent movies or/and some actors mumble their lines so it is almost impossible to follow the plot especially when the plot itself is not so simple.

    After everything you have heard and experienced with? What is your set up choice for home theater first? My personal favorite setup for HT is 3.1.2 for when done right, the upward firing reflective speakers can actually do a good job in creating a surround-like effect without needing to use surround speakers per se. While not EXACTLY the same, it's a good facsimile that for me allows me to enjoy movies without needing to be completely surrounded by gear or speakers.
