How to sew a French seam with a lining on a tote bag

In this video I am sewing a French seam in a tote bag with a lining as requested. Shout out to Barbra who asked me to make this video. I appreciate the question and the challenge. I wasn't sure how I was going to tackle it but here's what I came up with for you friend.
when doing a French seam with a lining, there will be some thick parts in the side seam area. All you have to do is go really slow over it. Don't include any interfacing or fusible fleece because it will be hard to sew over. I did use canvas fabric for the outer fabric but cotton on the inside and it wasn’t too think. Canvas fabric has a little thickness to it so you don’t really need to line the back with anything but the lining fabric for this project.

When you stitch the box bottom on the main fabric and the lining, are you boxing them separately, or are you boxing them together, is that because you are encasing/enclosing them as you did in the side seams to make them French seams. I hope you can understand what I'm asking. Thanks.

With this bag,..yes I boxed them both together because of the French Seams

Could the top edge be folded and sewed at the beginning before folding over. And, can a zipper be sewn in? Thanks!

You could fold over the top edge first without doing the French seam. You would just have to still connect the sides before folding the rim and sewing it. You can add a zipper by making a zipper gusset and attaching it. I made a video with the zipper attached. Here’s the link to it 👇

Hi, what size did you make your box corners? And, when you turned the tote to the right side, how much seam allowance did you sew on the outside?

Hey.. I boxed the corners about 1” and the seam allowance 5/8”

Yes! The bottom is attached at the corners.
