The part about marking is a little misleading. A mark is any catch made from a kick (anywhere over 15 metres). It's not just when they ride on the oppositions back to take a mark (that's called a 'speccy' or 'screamer')

Bouncing the ball on the run is an advanced skill. Most kids take years to get to a point where they will actually use the bounce in a game. As a substitute to the bounce, a player can lean down and touch the ball on the ground while still holding onto it, this counts as bouncing the ball and gives you another 16 yards (15 meters) to work with before you need to dispose of the ball or bounce the ball again. If you run too far without bouncing the ball, the umpire will pay a free kick against that player.
I believe the rule was invented because of the quicker players from the past who would use to tuck it under the arm and sprint off into the distance, or would keep dodging and weaving tackles for a ridiculous amount of time. This is speculation, but it sounds right to me, the concept of the bounce forces the player to execute an act which will prevent them from reaching their absolute top pace. This gives the defender a chance to catch a player with the ball despite not being quite as quick.

    • @jafrost1328

As a solid rugby player that tried to transition, the bounce is what sent me straight back to rugby, just couldnt get it right at full pelt and speed was my best asset

Personally I believe the Gold Coast Suns are the best team because that is who I support. The Suns are also the second newest team starting in 2011 followed by the greater western Sydney giants who started in 2012 also the giants are the favourites to win the grand final this year.
The teams that have one the most grand finals are Essendon bombers 16 and hawthorn hawks 16. The club that have one the most grand finals in a row are the Collingwood magpies who one four in a row (1927, 1928, 1929, 1930). The Collingwood magpies are also considered the most supported club in the league but they are also the most hated club in the league especially hated by there rivals the Carlton blues who are the second most supported club and second most hated club.

Today is Grand Final Day in Australia - Collingwood vs West Coast. Hawthorn and Geelong have been pretty dominate in the last 12 years. Collingwood and Essedon are two of the other massive clubs. Attendance sits usually around 30,000, big games around 90,000. You bounce it properly by the way you drop it - at junior level you'll get a feel for how many steps you can take before you have to bounce. Tackles are awesome. Link here = ruclips.net/video/buYUPnj2zco/видео.html
Marks are catching a kicked ball -you dont have to jump. Defenders defend best by punching the ball, preventing a mark. The score in order ia number of goals, number of behinds, then the total so 130 in this example was their final score- which wins the game. Hope that helps 😊 enjoy the game mate

In pre-season matches, they have what's called a super goal - a goal kicked from outside the 50-meter arc that is worth nine points instead of six. It has never been used in the regular season.

Collingwood pulls the biggest crowds and has been involved in the top 5 highest attendances of all time and regularly brings a million people through the turnstiles each year, their average attendance per game is a little over 80,000

Example: 20.10. 130. The 20 in the final score represents 20 times the ball has gone through the large middle posts which equals 120. (20 x 6 points)The next number is the times the ball has hit the post or goes between the large and small goal posts (10x1 point). Obviously, the the last number is the points all up.

Depends on the era, we have an equalisation in AFL. So going through the the eras you'll have different powerhouse teams. It was only played in Melbourne Victoria FROM 1856-1981 and was known as the VFL, in the year 1982 South Melbourne Swans relocated to Sydney and is now known as the Sydney Swans and I think it was in 1990 or 1991 they changed the branding officially to the AFL (previously Victorian Football League to Australian Football League). The power house teams like Collingwood Magpies were in the 1920's where they won 4 flags in a row from 1927-30, Essendon Bombers were probably your powerhouse team in the 50's, 60's and 70's were a big mix but I'd say Richmond Tigers, Collingwood and Carlton Blues . The 1980's were all about the Hawks, they made 7 straight Grand Finals winning 4. The 1990's between Hawthorne Hawks, Carlton Blues, West Coast Eagles, Essendon, North Melbourne Kangaroos and Collingwood Magpies and Adelaide Crows. Early 2000's were my Team the Brisbane Lions who made it to 4 straight Grand Finals and winning three straight from 2001-03 and losing one in 2004, then it was Sydney and West Coast, the Geelong Cats and Saint Kilda Saints. Now the powerhouses are Hawthorne again, Geelong, Sydney, Western Bulldogs, Adelaide and West Coast. In terms of Members though the powerhouses have always been Collingwood Magpies (the most famous Football club in Australia) along with Hawthorne Hawks who get about 80k Members, Carlton and Essendon who usually get around 60k+ members each year, nowadays you'd have to say (not always been the case) Sydney Swans who average over 50k members along with Adelaide Crows and West Coast Eagles and Richmond Tigers. They would be your "Big Ticket Teams"! But I am Biased #GoLions #BrisbaneForever #OnePride :D. One thing is for sure it is our National Religion and all fans are tribal in there own unique ways.

In AFL, with the teams, the draft and salary caps are designed so the teams don't usually stay dominant for too long, at the moment the clear favourite for the season is the West Coast Eagles based out of Western Australia, my home team. All club premierships before this date are State league premierships.
Eg: Port Adelaide (EST in 1870) has won 37 premierships. 36 State premierships and 1 AFL premiership.
Richmond has also won 1 AFL premiership and the others are State premierships.

The score at 5.45 is Collingwood 20 goals (20x6 points = 120 points) 10 behinds (=10 points) - total score 120+10 = 130 points. Carlton 18 goals (18x6 points= 108 points) 12 behinds (=12 points) - total score 108+12 = 120 points. So if Carlton had kicked more accurately so three of its behinds had been goals instead, they would have had 21 goals, 9 behinds = 135 points - and would have won the game.

How do you bounce the ball? Australian Rules footballs aren't as sharp ended as an American ball and are really rounded each end. You throw it ahead a lil as you run and get it to hit just at the start over the curved end.

the score line from (3:57) goes like this: Collingwood: 20 goals (6 points each) 10 behinds (1 point each) makes 130
Carlton: 18 goals, 12 behinds for a score of 120.... does that make sense?

You don't have to estimate 16 yards because in Australia we do it in meters so it's 15 meters which is about 15 steps. And to take a mark you don't have to jump you just have to catch the ball off a kick without it touching the ground.

There is a sweet spot on the ball, on the bottom side towards the front of the ball, if your running at full pace and bounce the ball on that sweet spot what actually happens is the ball almost bounces straight up and the player then basically runs into the ball and hits his chest where the player just grabs the ball. Believe it or not cal also do that with a NFL ball, it's a lot harder but standing still it's fairly easy

Bit more info. He (Tom Wills) invented it in 1858. The first officially recognised game was between Melbourne Grammar School and Scotch College that year. And the Melbourne Football Club was founded that year and still plays in the AFL. They celebrate their 160th anniversary next year. There are few professional football clubs in the world older than Melbourne FC.

Bit more fact sharing: a mark got its name coz players use to wear caps and instead of having a man stand "on the mark" they use to throw down the cap as "the mark" where they caught the ball. hence now called "a mark"

Best teams in afl, well it depends if you mean of all time: collingwood, carlton or essendon (purely as they have won the most premierships) or of recent times: sydney, geelong, hawthorn (some may also say fremantle). At the moment the team Western Bulldogs are the best as they won last year in almost leicester style. But realistically the best teams are the ones that were in the top 4 last year.

AFL is the oldest coded sport in the world. It was originally based on an indigenous game that has been played by Indigenous Australians for thousands of years. It was originally developed to keep cricket players fit in the off season, which is why it is played on a cricket field. AFL players can run up to 20km (12.5miles) during a game.

Not all teams have been in the AFL for the same amount of time. So trying to decide the greatest all-time team is hard. It also changes year to year. Sometimes, teams, you thought you could rely on to win, don't. This can be because they are trying to restructure, which typically means bringing in younger players and rebuilding their team. Or simply because they're having a bad year. Some teams can surprise you which is happening a lot lately. When it comes to finals, it's the best of the best, however, some teams suffer under the pressure. This typically happens to younger teams. Older, more experienced players can be a real asset in this situation. They are usually better able to read the play and handle the 'finals pressue'. Younger players are eager and have the stamina, but can buckle under the pressure. It's a super interesting sport to get into. Can definitely recommend supporting the West Coast Eagles!

The ball is differently shaped to what you'd use in American football. I don't think its possible with an NFL ball because its designed to have more control in throwing and therefore much more rounded. Not entirely sure though I've only played with an American football a handful of times. Bouncing an AFL ball does take practice and you can't do it if you've never been shown but most kids learn it pretty fast when they start playing, it just becomes clockwork after a while like any technique in sport. You can see the guys playing do it like it's nothing and looking for a teammate to link to.

Its quite widespread.. every year there will be the more "dominant" team but fpr example, Carlton have the all time high of premierships won but the past few years they have been right at the bottom of the table so it depends every year how each teams recruiting and drafting goes.

I'm from Australia, my profile picture is a picture of the best player in the AFL in 2016 who plays for the Geelong Cats. Recently Hawthorn was the better team winning 3 Grand finals in a row from 2013, 2014 and 2015. Most teams are successful (hawthorn, Geelong, Sydney, Western Bulldogs, Collingwood, Essendon and Brisbane) with each of these teams winning at least one Grand final in the past 17 years. If I was you I would pick Geelong Cats as a favourite team as they are still being successful for more than 10 years.

*_*Absolutely stoked that AFL has now got a following in North America - both the US and Canada. Men and women both._**
You were asking who has won the most Premierships/Flags? It changes a lot from year to year, but here's a start:
    afltables.com/afl/teams/allteams/grandfinals.html
    www.ixquick.com/do/search?q=AFL+premierships+per+team
But what's important to note is that the teams that have won the most Grand Finals may or may not be doing well in any individual season - it just changes so much from year to year. For those that are interested, coming up is the AFL Grand Final:
    www.afl.com.au/ - Saturday 30th September 2017
    Adelaide Crows - www.afc.com.au/
    vs
    Richmond Tigers - www.richmondfc.com.au/
This is the big one, where players and supporters alike have been waiting all year. Each year Grand Final crowds are somewhere around 100k, and it's like nothing you've ever seen. The noise!!! I'm an Adelaide Crows supporter, where I'm jumping out of my skin in anticipation.
But what I really want to know is what do people in the US and Canada think of AFL....once they've seen a game and had the rules explained to them, to some degree? I'm sure it must be terribly confusing to people that haven't had the rules explained, but once they've got a bit of any idea....how do people take to in North America?

Just to explain the scoring.... it's a little like early school maths equations. The video showed:
    Team A: 20.10.130
    versus
    Team B: 18.12.120
The first number is goals. A goal is worth 6 points and scored when kicked through the middle two up-rights.
So team A scored 20 goals and Team B scored 18 goals.
The second number is the points or "behinds" scored. A behind is when it passes through any of the up-rights for any reason, that don't meet the requirements of a goal. They count for only 1 point. Team A scored 10 points ("behinds"), Team B scored 12.
The third number is the total score of goals and points added. So...
    Team A: 20 goals (20 x 6) = 120 + 10 behinds (10 x 1) = 130
    Team B: 18 goals (18 x 6) = 108 + 12 behinds (12 x 1) = 120
    Hope that made sense.
Come to Australia I'll take you to a game...

There are powerful AFL teams historically eg Carlton, Hawthorn, Collingwood etc. However its a bit more equalised due to rules governing salary cap, draft picks etc. Basically if you finish lower, you get better draft picks. There is a limit to how much you can spend on players, so rich teams can't just buy the best players etc. This is designed so rich teams (ie those with more supporters or affluent supporters) cannot continuously dominate like some did in the past. The idea is that its more exciting if the teams are more evenly matched.

ok the scores explained as you looked confused the first column is goals so that number is multiplied by 6, the second column is points so that number is multiplied by 1 and the final column is the total score so for example - 10 12 72. On your question on the best team there is not one best team each team goes through finals contention and rises to the top eventually they get older and lose players and drop off most teams have a 3-4 year window before they start to drop off, Some teams take longer to rebuild and some dominate for longer. Each team other than gws and gold coast have what they would call their sweet years, This would be years they dominated the competition and won a series of flags or championships.

I'm an Aussie I'm a girl, it is easy to bounce the ball if you grow up playing it which all kids do. You must not run with the ball more than 15 metres without bouncing it, kicking it, or handballing it. If players do not have a viable option to kick or handball to, they bounce it. If they run more than 15 metres without doing one of the above, it is a free kick to the other side.

There really isn't a 'best' team. As rosters, coaches and umpires change, different teams rise up and down the ladder so each season there are leading teams, not #1 teams. For example, two years ago my team, Fremantle (Dockers), won the grand final and was #1 on the ladder but this year, although our season isn't over yet, we are #11 on the ladder. This is because we lost two of our key players - Pavlich and Ballentine (he was shown in the reaction video). Hopefully this helps to explain the many variables included in AFL, because the reaction video definitely left out little details that help people to gain a better understanding of the sport. :) Great video

So your question about who is the better team is like opening Pandora’s box. Every fan of the 18 teams will tell you their team is the best. If you want to look at past history, you have teams like Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Hawthorn etc, who have the most premierships. The most consistent team in recent times is the red and white Sydney Swans. They have missed the finals only three times in the past 25 years. The 20 .10.130 scoreline is 20 goals x six points each, equals 120 points, plus the 10 behinds, equals a total of 130 points. It is the total points that decides winning or losing a game.

Teams change over the years, and some years they're good and some they're not as good. (E.g. Sydney Swans played the Grand Final last year, and at the end of Round 6 this year, they're at the very bottom of the ladder). This year it's been pretty even and unpredictable. Also, some teams have been in the competition for much longer than others. (E.g. Carlton have been around for 150++ years, whereas GWS have been around for less than 10)
