I took Finnair flight from Delhi to Helsinki and it was connecting flight from Helsinki to London on Finnair.

Interesting repport! About the Helsinki airport: it's actually bigger than it may seem at first. The terminal is devided in two sections, I assume you only stayed in the so called non-Schengen section that handles flights to/ftom Asia, USA, UK and other countries outside the European passport-free zone, called Schengen.
The other side has more gates, it handles the flights inside the Schengen zone where passports are not needed normally. Most of the intra-European flights are handled like domestic flights.
