  • Buddy Merrill is a fantastic guitarist and steel guitarist best known for his many years on the Lawrence Welk show. Few people know just HOW good he really was, and we are going to put a few clips on youtube to help set the record straight.
    Here Buddy plays the western swing classic "South" on his Fender quad-neck Stringmaster Steel Guitar.

    There is a reason you don't see steel players smiling when they play. Try it some time. There simply is not enough processing power in the human brain to put a smile on top of all that effort. Buddy was/is damn good.

    • @scowell
      @scowell 4 года назад +3

      Watch Speedy West's Welk performance... smiling the entire time. Probably the only way to do it... just fix your face in a smile and keep it there.

      You can tell That's what Welk told him to do, and Buddy tries. Not so much during the more technical runs though. ;-)

      if im not smiling while playing, its not sounding right. But ill tell ya, not even harmony vocals would come close to happening while playing steel. It certainly is another set of brain pathways compared to regular acoustic guitar. Many Blessings to you and your loved ones.

    Hi you!
    A few days after posting my comment here I' ve got my blonde Fender Quad. It was offered as a 1957 Q8 but it' s dated 8-55 ! If I put down all knobs together(!!!) with the palm, all necks are active but there is less volume. On e-bay you will find sometimes such guitars, mine is from Oklahoma. Expensive shipping to AUSTRIA. But' s it' s an amazing instrument. My other main steels are 2 Fender Triple necks; a 02/54er 26" long scale and a "white blonde" 09/55 T 8 (22,5scale).
