  • This video compares the original NES to an AV modded NES 2 (top loader) using Super Mario Bros 3 as the test game.
Both systems were captured via composite using a DVD recorder with the same game, composite cables, and power supply.
There is clearly a difference in video and audio quality. The audio on the NES2 is quieter than the original NES. For this mod, I opted to add two RCA jacks (red and white) for audio but bridged the two to provide the original mono output.
Another interesting Item about the two consoles that has nothing to do with the AV mod is that the SMB3 timer gets out of sync by up to four seconds.
This mod uses the parts and instructions found here: console5.com/st....

The timer on SMB3 Gets out of sync because getting hit or powerups seems to stop time. Look, when it gets off sync is when the Left one gets the Leaf and the right one does not. That second lasts longer than other ones.

I just saw that too. I speedrun games, so if I want to perform this mod, I can't have the timing of the games get out of sync. So when I first saw that, I was turned off by the mod... until I noticed what you said. And saw it for myself.

Both timers are weird. Your actual gameplay is about 57 seconds. 300 timer starts ~2 seconds in, you end at 59-60 seconds in.
Frontloader did 63 time ticks while toploader did 67.

I'll stick with the front loader thanks lol. Seems like allot of money spent (no idea what it actually costs) for very little improvement.

@@RoomerJ Not on that ripoff website RetroFixes. They charge an outrageous $235 for the service of modding an NES 2 for AV support.

@@L33PL4Y Why in the world would you pay someone to do that. My son helped me on the last one I did for a friend and besides me holding then soldering iron with him for the few times it needed it,.he basically did it himself.
Also 200+ bucks for basic composite amp and stereo mod. That can't be right

      @@RoomerJ It's not right, it's a total ripoff. That's my point.
