- Super Mario 64 recently has new footage found of its old multiplayer mode in action featuring Luigi himself. Today we'll be looking that footage closely and analyzing all we know about Luigi in this game

It's so cool to see how far Luigi made it, back then we thought he never made it in.
Even I heard the rumors when I was little...
That's what she said
We do know he was in the game prior to the Gigaleak cause there was old Japanese strategy guides interviewing the devs and Miyamoto and they said they had a multiplayer event where you got to play with luigi but was cut due to the N64 not having two controllers when you got it

@@sonicgamer178 wait so people already knew? Why didn't I hear about this
the camera man in 1995: cool Luigi is in the game. I don’t need to record him cuz he will prob be in the final release lol
It was obvious that Luigi wouldn't be in the final release. He was on a demo video with him running across a checkerboard map. From people seeing that they probably knew that he got removed really early in development
It's crazy that people back then were just playing as Luigi in a 2-player mode at demo kiosks and it was never known until now. It makes me wonder how many other things like this could come from Japan and we don't know about because of the language barrier. Like, were people in Japan well aware of this while the rest of the world considered Luigi an unseen myth?
They weren't. If you actually look at the video it's just a demo of the game that's showing till you press something. People weren't playing as Luigi on demo kiosks.
No it's actually an promo video, the game can't just switch from Pilotwings 64 to Super Mario 64 instantly, Also the thing at the top clearly says it.@@matty6598
Actually, it's a demo
Can you imagine what kind of stuff we would’ve gotten back in the day if the n64 games were made on CDs instead of cartridges? Luigi and others in SM64, more dungeons in OOT, etc.
The memory issue here is about the internal memory available for the N64 processor (the RAM), not storage space within the cartridge. A standard Nintendo 64 with games on CDs would likely still have had the same issue.
Maybe the memory pack would have helped though. Also, I _think_ the actual N64DD (which used magnetic disks, not actual CDs) also added more memory, so it's possible that a Super Mario game for the 64DD would have been able to make Luigi real.
Yea. And despite the memory issue, the SM64 Multiplayer hack runs pretty decent and is surprisingly fun and playable on the unoptimised SM64 engine on real hardware.
We can only imagine how Mario 64 could have been if Nintendo had access to the wizardry and knowledge of Kaze Emmanuar.
Mostly, I think it would have been worse. Certainly performance-wise. CDs at the time couldn't do too much at once, so you'd be looking at much smaller areas and frequent load times like you'd get from the PS1. I remember reading an interview that discussed how an area like Hyrule Field simply wouldn't have been possible without chopping it up and putting in gated loading zones. Even stuff like the way the music in Banjo Kazooie could dynamically change based on where you were standing, swapping in different instruments on the fly. On a CD it'd have to do a hard cut to a different track instead.
@@overwatch761apparently the n64 manual was in English and they only translated the basics
Should've had it in the N64 super Mario 3D all stars but nope it's sticks to the original except for some tweaks.
that multiplayer segment footage is so cool I dunno how I've never seen that before!
I believe it's modded in?
@@comradestannis it's new footage
We've all only just seen it. It's interesting to find.
@@comradestannis what that doesn’t even make any sense how could you mod something into old footage that’s not even what modding means no offense
@@comradestannis Language barrier basically, it's how some things are considered 'lost media' in some countries but not in others. It went unnoticed for so long because it's a video from a japanese media news.
What I love about this channel is that it tells us all the objective theories and provides us evidence, this is absolutely the right way to make content on very old games. Unlike other channels that try to bullshit you into the artificial videos telling you far fetched theories of how "majoras mask was actually gonna be african vodoo zelda the game with these super weird masks" and they try to wring more and more bullshit out of the best nintendo games to date. But this channel is better than that and I like that.
Yeah, the Majora's Mask theories especially are out-there and really just a lot of bullshit and wishful thinking.
I'm guessing you talk the way you type, just constantly blabbering on with no pauses.
I love how you took a two seconds clip, and were able to produce a full entertaining video about it. I follow very few people on youtube, but you sir deserve to be followed. Quality content
I CAN'T be the only one who sees this... 0:15 Look at the monitor on the far right, that is clearly Luigi in his standing pose. Not the middle one which is the focus of the video, but the next one.
I'm pretty sure that's Mario. The head and body look too wide to be Luigi's. Plus, if you look at his shirt, it's red. The green hue on the hat is probably due to color distortion from the old camera (Common occurrence with footage taken back then).
It was right in front of us... regarding this footage...
Nobody was playing as Luigi on the demo kiosks. These were just demos recorded way before the event, this one likely dates back to near the start of the games development.
It doesn't date back to near the start of the game's development, as if it did, it would look even less complete.
I love that this footage was discovered. But that makes me wonder, didn't anyone remember seeing Luigi at the event? I mean, you'd think someone would have seen the demo showing Luigi and talked about it. It's so interesting to me that this slipped completely under the radar for 28 years.
I just commented on this too. I wonder if it's a language thing? Maybe this is well known by the Japanese Mario 64 community.
Well the footage seen on the TV is a B-Roll video tape with lots of other games being showcased and not live gameplay so it probably wouldn't've gotten too much attention. Not to mention if someone were to remember it, everyone would probably just dismiss it as someone lying or misremembering.
@@Dorito_Djinn That could be a plausible theory for the 90's. But now that we have the modern internet which is essentially international, given you know the language, and Japanese culture is very popular in the west. So, if it was well-known or talked about in Japanese, it likely would've been found years ago.
@@Gevs True. But I feel like it should've at least become some sort of Mandela affect where people remember seeing some "checkerboard level" with Luigi in it. You'd think at least one person would've fueled the L is Real rumors by saying something along the lines of, "To unlock Luigi, you need to find the checkerboard level.". Not to mention the fact that there is no other footage of this. Maybe it was only that one particular screen that played the video containing Luigi. It just surprised me that such a well-documented event could have something pretty big that slipped right under the radar for so many years.
@@2020ManWhole lot of something to say a whole lot of nothing
Funny enough, when I was a kid, we used to have an N64 and super Mario 64 (along with Mario Party 1 and others). Me and my older brother thought that there was a 2 player mode, but it didn't.
Imagine being the kid that played as luigi on that demo, going back to your home, months passed and you talked with your friends about the multiplayer mode and playing with Luigi, and even if your classmates dont see it, they know you went and play that demo. So the rumour spread in your school. But you're a bit weird out, somehow, it feels out of place to remove a whole multiplayer mode, and since you dont understand the programing reasons behind that decision, you just feel like it was a mistake from nintendo. Suddenly years passed. You moved on a bit, but in your early years of your highschool you see people discussing about the possibility of Luigi being in the game. You know the true, so you comment your experience, but no one actually believes you for real, even the people that believes luigi exists are still in disbelief of your experience. You know it. You know Luigi is real. Despite this, years passed, part of you moved on even more. You barely remember the whole deal, but.. somewhere, somewhen, somehow you read an article about the gigaleak. And you see it. You see his face. You recognize the model, the colours are correct, many years people created models with different heights and colours, always a bit off. But this is it. You reconcile with your childhood experience again. Someone port it into a mod, you download it and play it. It feels so unreal. A few years later the footage appears, and not only you see Luigi again in that CRT screen, but you see yourself as a child, playing without knowing how much of an adventure you were going to live. You cry a bit in reminisce of your childhood..
"Ram bus go Vroom Vroom."
not
Yeah, I was thinking about that. If the game was as optimized as kaze has made it now, we would actually be able to have multiplayer Mario 64.
i really wish the 64dd didn't flop because we would've gotten games like mario 64 2, mother 3, 64 wars and many more games that we've only heard of or seen in a few screenshots
The n64 already flopped because of the ps1
@@Spoon97 yeah, I know but still, would've been great to see some of those games that are currently shrouded in mystery actually be released
They should’ve put this in 3D Allstars
Thanks for the video! Nobody explained it better than you.
If Nintendo ever remakes the original Mario 64 let's hope 2 player would be possible and to be specific I'm not talking about the DS version I'm talking about the N64 version
Tbh, I reallyl liked the DS version.
there was a remake technically on the switch that came out recently called super mario 3d all stars which was a collection of mario 64, mario sunshine and mario galaxy but they didn't really add anything to any of the 3 games, just some bug fixes
I have an idea, maybe the leaked test map is the same, just whoever the starting character is it changes to their respective color, this theory only holds up though if player one and 2 could choose their character, which I have no idea if that was planned or scrapped or leaked…
I grew up with either me watching my brother play or vice versa, it woulda been sick af to play together
If there’s ever a possible remake of Mario 64 I really hope they bring Luigi in the game instead of leaving Luigi out of it. Cause I believe Luigi deserves to be playable in the game.
such a great video. loved it!
like lego do in lego games when you are in multiplayer if you go far you get split screen and if you get closer it will get horizontal and get normal again
Of all the games needing a true remake, this one definitely needs another chance to really do what it was always meant to do. Sadly, Nintendo has already released the "updated" version on the DS instead.
64 DS is actually a great game in its own right. It gave us not only playable Luigi, but Wario and Yoshi too. It not only updated the graphics, but added new levels, bosses, power ups and minigames.
@joshslater2426 It's a fine game, but not the update we want. The graphics are actually downgraded because the DS was a 32 bit console. They were just better at using techniques to hide that it was a downgrade.
Nintendo: oh sh*t they know
If only Super Mario 64 had 4-player split-screen like Mario Kart 64;
with Mario, Luigi, Wario and Yoshi as playable characters.
100% what I needed to see
when you asked what the camera was gonna be like i said "smbx?"
and when you showed your theory i said "smbx!"
YES! More N64 Beta Stuff :3
Can you cover other N64 Games too?
wow, this is so cool! its always crazy to find irrefutable footage like this of Beta stuff we only have remnants of now.
Luigi_Far_Poly hits. It's super effective! Nintendo Fans fainted!
When he lands, he just looks like a stretched mario
Edit:Maybe if ALL of the promo material of spaceworld 1995, we could have seen luigi in an good way, and there was footage of the B-Roll build of mario walking to bowser and then falling and another one with the slide one which can be seen in the gamezero footage
I love your videos man. They give me life
I don't remember if Nintendo had Luigi in SM64
Oh, this is nice. I mean, I am more zelda stuff as a whole. But this is pretty friking cool too
did anyone even finish the previously mentioned multiplayer code? if so. is there a video of how does it work
How can I play this co op mode with my son?
There is a rom hack for emulators/N64 and a pc port with which you can play online
You can look it up
Way to go guy! This is news
would the 8 megabyte expansion pack have fixed the memory issues?
PLEASE make a SM64 playlist.
I think they would have had to go split screen down the line.
L is Real
You can play multiplayer Mario64 online
Great video! L is real!!!
Hell yeah!
Please link this footage! :D
Nintendo got leaked again? Mario 64?!
i think that its fake because the footage doesnt show 1P and 2P logos and in 0:16 people never would have discovered mario noclipping through the camera (i forgor what its called lol)
It's not fake. It comes from a long 40 minute video where this was 5 seconds of B-Roll footage.
@@HighPriestFuneral i didnt know that the footage existed 3 weeks ago..
I think the 1p was for early builds when they thought they can make the multiplayer with splitscreen
@@Spoon97maybe your right tho
i remember in uruguay in a popular shopping mall to promote the nintendo 64 there was a long line of like an entire floor to play with the new super mario 64 witch had a 4 player divided screen. you could play as mario, luigi the princess and bowser. i guess the idea was at the end of the game to unlock all characters to play in different stages. all where clones of mario (all same abilities) and the princess was twice the size of mario, bowser was smaller to fit doors etc. the gimmick was a player choose a room, then the others would need to follow and enter the same level. it was a co-op way to get all the stars x4 faster since each character could pick up one star before beeing sent back to the castle (your personal screen would go white while waiting for the others to go back to the main castle or just quit the level) it was the same game just with 3 mario clones skinned as different players. i guess it was not all that fun in 4 player mode since it was scrapped. most likely what we got on super mario 64 ds but you just swap characters.
L is real 2401
