Look at 0:04 I can see the Dunes Hotel and Casino Las Vegas and I saw the Aladdin in the left and this is waaaaaaay before the Aladdin in the left imploded RIP Dunes and Aladdin
I heard it was because the wiring was so complicated that if they took the sign down and put it back up at a museum or somewhere else that either the whole thing or partial of the sign would not light up
This was basically one of the first of the old casino/hotels to go.. The start of the "mega resort" era . I've been here my whole life so I've seen it all. I remember the grand opening of the mirage. Actually the mirage "1989" was the first mega resort. Now the bellagio sits where the dunes once was. Caesars palace is now a mega resort. At lest they never demo'd the place. Just added to it. The LV strip is sooooo much different now. 50+ story, 4000+ room hotels are now everywhere... It's so much bigger and more impressive to see, but I will always miss the dunes. I remember as a young kid hanging out in the bell desk back room eating candy from the candy shop. My whole family worked there at some time or another. It's sad in a way.. But I make a living off building these big mega resorts so I guess I can't complain.
The Hilton (1969) and MGM Grand (1973), Kirk Kerkorian Projects, were also considered mega resorts that preceded the Mirage. These are the oldest and are still standing.
I remember seeing this implosion on a construction machines movie as a kid, when I was 3, I'm 15 now, and this crossed my mind, and i wanted to come back and see something i haven't for 12 years
I echo MrTimido92 in that this is the best footage of the Dunes implosion I've seen! Most have a shaking hand or completely miss the sign being destroyed, but this one was on target and steady even as the sign blew up. Good views as well, good quality for the time. Excellent.
Steve Wynn.... I used to think he was a good thing for Vegas... but now I think he's turned into a nightmare ,all of the fee's that never exist are all thanks to Steve cause he hasn't made enough $in Vegas now he wants to nickel and dime everyone to death...wouldn't stay in one of his places if they gave it to me....♡
Doing some research into it, I found out the sign's cost of removal was excessive and there was no guarantee it would work again, given how big and electricity-hungry it was.
FigmentsFan That's a real pity. As a a preservationist, I really wish that iconic sign could've been saved, but, as with everything else in life, it all boils down to money. The cost of saving the sign was just too great.
I moved to Las Vegas in 1991 witness this with my eyes as a young man 24yr old now I'm ,53 my time passes.seem just like yesterday.
I love how whenever there is an implosion, they make it a massive fiesta lol But Dunes has been apart of Vegas since the 50s
The death of the sign was terrible, it just lost power and became lifeless

Its sad how things are just destroyed. Why blow up the sign?
I heard it was because the wiring was so complicated that if they took the sign down and put it back up at a museum or somewhere else that either the whole thing or partial of the sign would not light up
It costed too much to remove and wasn’t guaranteed to work after the move
That was awesome, that's like the best way to go out other than withering away in storage someplace. Vegas is about fun and that's fun

The year i was born the dunes was demolished 27 years ago
Probably should've saved the sign, but too late now.
The beginning of the end of Old Las Vegas. After the Dunes came down it was all megaresorts from there on out.
I remember seeing this implosion on a construction machines movie as a kid, when I was 3, I'm 15 now, and this crossed my mind, and i wanted to come back and see something i haven't for 12 years
I was there when it happened
You guys never seen the dunes but that made room for the bellagio

Why on EARTH would they BLOW UP the SIGN?!? That's just weird
This is R.I.P.
The dunes was the first implosion

Lmao, at the beggining the Aladdin is just chillin there xD
Bleach Clan Aladdin was demolished in 1998
And that was 5 years after the Dunes Hotel was imploded.
The Aladdin: (chuckles) I’m in danger.
Michael Bay should see this.
why did they destroy the sign
+AntunovacDoTokia because they can.
I know I totally agree! That was such an awesome sign for it's time. So iconic and should have been saved
Doing some research into it, I found out the sign's cost of removal was excessive and there was no guarantee it would work again, given how big and electricity-hungry it was.
you have to go out with a bang.. vegas style!
