The Trop is dropped: See the implosion from every angle

  • The seconds ticked away early Wednesday morning until the husk of the Tropicana Las Vegas resort, deserted since its April 2024 closing date, would meet a final and spectacular end, bringing to a close the era of the 67-year-old structure once a bastion for visitors from across the country.
The Las Vegas classic was set to come down in style with a seven-minute celebration involving 550 drones and 150 “pyrodrones” counting down to the controlled demolition of the resort originally erected in 1957.
Phil Grucci, CEO and president of Fireworks by Grucci, previewed the celebration ahead of the demolition, revealing that the show will feature images of the Tropicana logo, the iconic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, and a tribute to the Athletics franchise, whose proposed $1.5 billion, 33,000-seat ballpark could open in the footprint of the former Tropicana in time for the 2028 season.
What else will occupy the 35-acre site, aside from the 9-acre stadium, is a mystery. In July, Bally’s, the company that controlled most of the site, entered into a merger agreement with its top stockholder, Standard General.
A total of 917,400 square feet will be imploded with the use of nearly 2,200 pounds of explosives. The demolition sequence will begin with the implosion of the 23-story Paradise Tower and end with the implosion of the 23-story Club Tower. It’s expected both buildings will collapse within 22 seconds after the implosion button is pressed, according to the Bally’s Corporation news release.
A historic presence on the Las Vegas Strip, the iconic resort served as Michael Corleone’s Las Vegas casino business in the 1972 film “The Godfather” and hosted a stay in the entertainment capital of the world for James Bond, portrayed by Sean Connery in 1971’s “Diamonds Are Forever.”
Wednesday morning’s implosion will be the first since 2016, when The Riviera was imploded in two separately controlled demolitions, one on June 14 and the other on Aug. 16. Other long-gone Las Vegas hotels include The New Frontier, The Stardust Resort and Casino, Castaways Hotel and Casino, Boardwalk Hotel and Casino, Bourbon Street Hotel and Casino, Desert Inn, El Rancho, Aladdin, Hacienda, Sands, Landmark, and The Dunes.

Goodbye Tropicana from a teary Brit. First trip to the USA was November 2002 to get married. First night we left our hotel (Excalibur) to go exploring the four hotels on our interchange, Excalibur, New York, MGM and ended up at the Trop late at night (about 2am). The only bar open was full of a wedding party for a US Marine and the group were intrigued as to who these 2 Brits were and how we were enjoying LV. Once we told the we were UK military and had recently returned from the gulf it was like we had been best friends forever. What a night and what a start to our marriage. Kept meeting some of the group throughout our stay and just had the best time ever, great memeories.

Stayed at the Tropicana a couple of decades ago. Returning the first evening I was trying to puzzle out which was the right tower / elevator when a woman in a sharp business suit asked me if I needed help finding my room. I said yes, gave her my room number, and she took me directly to the right elevator and up to my floor. I thanked her and went into my room, thinking how nice it was that the hotel had staff on hand to help guests find their rooms... then it dawned on me... she wasn't wearing a hotel ID. She was indeed "working" that evening, just not for the hotel! (Nice disguise!)

This is beyond sad!An era gone!
Not to mention the fact they did it at 230 in the morning and I heard it at my house
It woke me up scaring me
    And these idiots are applauding!

It’s almost like the buildings melt. It’s kind of trippy.

Ah my favorite memory of the Tropicana was laying by the pool and the staff announcing that they were closing the pool due to a biohazard. Turned out some guy didn't want to leave the swim-up blackjack table, so he just dropped a deuce at his seat. 😅

The Vegas I knew growing up doesn’t exist anymore. Sad to see the old hotels with so much history be destroyed

And here I thought I clicked on a collab of Tropicana FIELD getting it’s “roof” ripped off. Thought it might have been an inside job….😂

Bummer, I got to see the Titanic exhibit and the Bodies exhibit at the Tropicana around 20 years ago. I was too young to gamble and it was an easy way to waste time while the adults gambled.

I’m a musician. I played at the Tropicana many times over the years. I don’t play music anymore, but I think the Tropicana had become one of the ugliest resorts on the Strip. I say, GOOD RIDDANCE! Bring on the Athletics!!!!!!

I've been in and out of Vegas for the last 30 years or so.
Never once set foot in the Tropicana.
Still sad to see a landmark go.

Should start building Vegas like Saudi Arabian style city in the desert, instead of hulking Suburbs in the heat 😅 either way Vegas on a come up!
