Hello Dapper & Flapper! You both look the part for Roaring 20's, highly entertaining! Love the spirit you bring. Definitely, the captain forgot to take his diplomacy pill. I work in the transportation industry & a lot of my passengers want to shake my hand. I raise up my elbow & offer an elbow to elbow bump. Still is a physical contact & maintains the important infection control issue. Trans-Atlantic crossings are the BEST! The ship is the destination. Flying to Europe first to get rid of the jet lag before boarding the ship. My brain is like cheap cotton candy when I have jet lag. On my last crossing aboard Queen Mary 2 the captain made an announcement during second seating dinner one evening asking for everyone's attention....then he paused a moment & said we were at the closest nautical mile along our route to the Titantic site. He then asked that everyone stop what they were doing & observe a moment of silence. He was a classy captain. Made for an interesting, sad, & haunting moment.

Another enjoyable blog. I prefer a west to east crossing for exactly the same reasons you gave. When I travelled on QM2 pre pandemic I bumped into the Captain in the Library. I thanked him for looking after me, the crew and everything else he did to make the west to east crossing safe and pleasurable but he said he doesn't shake hands when I offered mine. I was OK with that. I didn't want him falling ill or hurt. You don't know where people have put their hands. I have been given some really awful bone crushing handshakes in my life time by much bigger hands and I have told those people off for hurting - totally unnecessary (not a good start or ending to an encounter). Paul .. perhaps the captain noticed you had big hands and he was struck with fear far greater than storms on the high seas!
Spent 12 days going from town to town and exploring in the UK via train.Walked over 100 miles total. Spent the “ west” bound trans Atlantic QM2 voyage towards home “ relaxing in the luxury”.
Loved this video. You guys are amazing, so relatable. Looking forward to more Carole and Carole travels 😆 (Paul you are hilarious, especially when you're grumpy 😂😂)
I think the polite thing the Captain could have done was announce at the start of the cruise that he doesn’t shake hands, so as not to make people feel uncomfortable. My husband Brendon would be exactly like Paul if it had happened to him and I must say I understand that. Thank you for your vlog it was very interesting and informative as always. 😊😊

I sailed in December '22, both ways. Capt. Hashmi took the Great Circle (northern) route and the weather was quite nice, for the time of year. Mid-50s F. The word was that there were storms on the direct route and going north kept us out of them. Have to say there were those of us who were sorry to miss the big waves . . . I spent a shocking amount of time in G32 on the eastbound leg. Dance-dance-dance!

Hello carol and Paul! Just enjoyed another of your fantastic vlogs. Have to say I'm a bit surprised about captain hall as I have actually met him on cunard as well, and found him a very open friendly and quite humble man considering his position.
You're right about the distances and speed. The most northerly route is shortest due to curvature of the earth and is around 5500km. The route with the best weather goes close to The Azores and is about 1000km longer Weather plays a big part particularly eastbound. Airline pilots compete to get the fastest of the 3 Atlantic tracks used by planes from North America to Europe. Depending on the track the pilot manages to get approved, it can be up to 30 minutes quicker than the other 2 alternatives which the airline obviously loves as it saves so much fuel. Have a great time in Asia!
We will be heading Eastward on our upcoming HA TA. It works for me because I don’t want to wait until Autumn for for one heading in the other direction.
hullo steven here..yep we passed directly over Titanic...it was 3 days into the crossing about 2am...I was just in from the club and waiting on room service when the low key being bong message came on saying " we are now in the Titanic co ordinate area "
Hello you lovely two Thoroughly enjoyed this and it was like being on board with you. Incidentally, my friend just arrived today in NY on same ship QM2 and she did cruise over the Titanic site as she emailed me to tell me. ( I would find that quite sad and hoped she said a prayer for all those poor souls!) So, yes, there must be another way across although she was going from UK to NY. But a bit put out as ship docked in Brooklyn and not Manhattan and they were 4 hours late and she had a train to catch so was a bit panicked. But decided to self disembark and get a cab to Grand Union Station. But I did get your point Carole about the Captain not shaking hands. Perhaps he was a 'germaphobe' or just being super careful? Anyway, you two are very funny and great fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have done a fair bit of cruising but never on the Queen Mary - perhaps one day. Did you choose the sheltered balcony on purpose? Is it better than the open balcony? Just wondered. Thank you both so much. Happy Sailing.
Hiya 👋 paul & carol, I've just finished watching your vlog and found it very interesting, we are thinking of doing the Transatlantic as new york is on our bucket list. I must say tho I agree with paul about the captain thought that was quite rude of the captain, and I would be disappointed as there was no speeches, anyway if we do go on cunard hope we don't get that captain 😅. Thank you for your time for doing the vlogs ❤
Thank you for another great video! We are doing our transatlantic from East to West in June. Your information and insights have been fabulous and we can’t wait for our cruise!
If you’re only ever going to do one crossing, sail westbound for the arrival in New York. Otherwise eastbound is definitely the best option - no jet lag and no baggage allowance for all the shopping!
Wondering if the northern route was because of the medical evacuation on your crossing...I think you detoured to Newfoundland? We will be on QM2 Aug 23-Sept 22 this year so it's been really interesting to watch your series. We are southern US (hot humid summer!) so will welcome cooler weather if we get it! Love all the the little tips and details that you talk about. We will be so prepared! Best wishes for safe and happy travel to Asia! ✈🛳
My transatlantic on QE2 went right over Titanic and they announced they normally stop there and do remembrance but weren't because we were out running a hurricane
Your description of sailing over the abysmal plain sounded so much more dramatic than sailing over an abyssal plain. Made me wish I was still teaching to use it with my geography students, they would have loved it. Glad you tried the halibut again, it would have made me feel envious and hungry if I hadn’t not long finished my breakfast wheat biscuits. I was overwhelmed by the library on the Queen Victoria, the QM’s library sounds even more fantastic.
My husband was in the Coast Guard stationed at Governors Island in the International Ice Patrol which plotted where the icebergs were and they layed a wreath on Titanic’s memorial site every April 15. Coast Guard has been doing this since 1914.
We decided to bite the bullet and make a personal rule that we walk up one or two stairs if that took us to our destination and always walk down the stairs if going that way. It became easy peasy and didn't even think about it after a while.
@@PaulandCaroleLovetoTravel That's great, it really pays off but you usually get plenty of activity when in Port. This is an unusual cruise where there is only the final port stop.
I’ve only just started watching cruise videos so I’m not conversant in ‘ship speak’, what was your cabin with the enclosed balcony called? It’s the first time I’ve seen that!! It’s like an ocean view and balcony combined!
I found your channel, just recently, and you really make cruising sound like a fun holiday! I’m just wondering how accessible the ships and different cruise lines are for wheelchair users? I hope you have a great time on your Asian holiday. Thanks, Vicky😊
Hi Victoria, cruising is very wheelchair friendly, the only thing you would have to do is book an accessible cabin which on some ships can be quite thin on the ground, booking early is essential, but you will be very well looked after once onboard.
My daughter, Michaela, and I have done Queen Victoria a few years ago. She was trying to convince me to do Queen Mary to New York but I was not keen because of the flying part. I asked if we could do the new Queen Anne and so we are booked on that one next year!!! 10 nights including calling at Tangiers, which I am very excited about. Are you tempted to do Queen Anne??
We’re looking at doing the QM2 to the Fjords next April. Would you recommend your cabin or is it worth getting one on a higher level? And did you get the drinks package? (Hope you do a video regarding that..) Have a great trip to Asia 🥳
Higher up would probably be better for the fjords as you are less likely to have choppy seas especially once you get into the fjords, we never do the drinks package but that’s just a personal preference, no drinks package video but an excellent blog post detailing all you need to know here. paulandcarolelovetotravel.com/cunard-drinks-prices-and-packages/
Thx a lote for your vidéo I do this Transatlantiques withe my Mum in September 2025 for my Birthday an for my 21 years of Hilton compagny ... I whant to offer that to Mum because it's my Dreams since I 12 years old ...
Love the vlogs really entertaining and informative, I've now subscribed. Hope you don't mind me asking but do you say anywhere how much the whole trip cost including the stay in New York as it's something we would love to do 😊
They should have put on the invitation and announced prior to the start "the captain dies not shake hands". Its quite the awkward position to put invited guests in.
Loved watching this as for my 60th birthday in 2 more years I will be doing a Queen Mary cruise maybe the won you have just done. I would like to go on Queen Ann the newest ship have watched some you tubes on her, which looks lovely ❤️🥂🇦🇺
The captain does the time change during the day so he gets to work an hour less rather than having to lose an hour of sleep. It's more convenient for him - not the customer.
The captain could have handled it differently like a fist bump or something. 😂 To flat out just say that is rude when the event is a meet and greet. Might as well not have it at all then.
We were on the same trip but on week before too Southampton to NYC. Preferred that leg. Our cocktail party was pre dinner and really enjoyed it. Booking another round trip when the 2026 sailings come available ❤️
We love all your videos so Not sure why all the complaints about the captain not shaking hands. If that’s the procedures why not just accept and respect it and stop commenting over and over again. I’m sure the captain is a bit more critical to the operation than some of the other staff so there really isn’t a comparison.
Now as I watched all your Cunard Videos (what a fan-boy! 😂) I must really say that Elizabeth and Victoria are much more beautiful in my eyes then Mary. Is it just the videos, or is it also like this in reality? Most people say they cannot decide but if they had to chose they would take Mary but I... I would take Victoria I think... What do you think?
I’m in total disagreement with most comments here. I’ve taken this trip on QM2 five times now, and don’t recall the Captain ever shaking hands. I’m happy that anyone responsible for the wellbeing of several thousand passengers and crew takes steps to remain illness free while carrying out significant responsibilities. Handshaking perhaps unfortunately in the eyes of some, is now just a bit passé. It’s not a personal snub.
Question. We have a Princess Grill suite booked for a 13 day cruise this fall. Do we have to pay separately for juice and soda at the table when we are eating? i get the fact that liquor and specialty coffees might be extra but do we pay for soda or juice at meals when booked into Grill dining?
Soda [carbonated drinks] are an extra cost item. Depending on when/where you book a Grills fare, there _may_ be some included in your room. There are also soft drink packages - but we have not found them a good value.
I would turn it around, you were incredibly lucky getting the northerly passage since it is the most rare one. The northerly route is almost never done even today due to iceberg risk. Back in the days of Titanic it was never used since it was to all points and purposes was not navigable due to ice. It is only used when the sea is clear of ice to this day. It sort of speaks volumes about how the climate change is affecting us. Furthermore, a traditional Master of a Ship (Captain), only shake hands with God and the The King/Queen of the Country.
In the US, we have the expression of having been "treated like a red-headed stepchild." Maybe in the UK it should be called being "treated like a red-headed ex-prince?" 😂
Sorry, make that Walmart Wallis. That makes more sense. I knew what he meant, but i was hearing it, not reading it. Also George The Giant Slayer is doing a live show on the couplevright now! @michaelthompson6885
Ive always found the Captain's cocktail party to be incredibly boring.Agree with Carole re handshaking,on Celebrity they stopped doing it just at the beginning of covid, but they did do that stupid arm bump, sometimes.
The ship can afford to be without the Cruise Director for a few days if her hand-shaking makes her ill; the ship can't run as easily without the Captain! I'd rather have the Captain protect his health than paw at all and sundry.
Captain could have fist pumped you if he didnt want to shake your hands, its embarrassing for you and rude of the head of the ship to do that, he seems like a person who would get off the ship if it were sinking, watch out. LOL They say that its best to sail from Southamton to NYC since you will gain time as you sail to NYC and get 25 hours of daylight, I hope to do this crossing on the Queen Mary 2 next year. I have researched about the QM2 transatlantic crossing it can be done in 4 days and full speed but they Slow the speed down so it take 7 days, so the fact that they take a faster route seems like a conspiracy theory. LOL
OMG that captain is just plain rude. To not shake an extended hand is the height of bad manners. If he is a germ phobe, then perhaps he could use a pump of sanitiser after he had greeted everyone. Im with you on that one Paul.
If the transatlantic crossing is so popular, 2-3 year waiting list, how come Cunard doesn't have a second ship doing the crossing and how come other cruise lines hasn't cashed in on this financially lucrative cruise. Thank you
Hahaha Grumpy Captain or not, let's face it people just attend those parties for the free drinks! 😉 I can see that speeches etc aren't the thing anymore, Lol We're going West to East in May and we're only doing it because of a fantastic price and to try the Celebrity Apex. You live in the UK so you'll already be acclimated to your time zone. It's the opposite for us so it'll be interesting to see how we feel about time change and jetlag when we return home to Canada. 😉

A friend of mine went over site of titanic on QM2. Was about 5 years ago so I suppose they might have changed their policy on it?
We’ve heard a few different theories behind routes but your guess is as good as ours 🤣
I don’t go to the world club parties especially in the morning as that’s too early for me to drink.
Lol it is very early.....you can have soft drinks!
Yes we’ve already booked Queen Anne, we are really looking forward to it😊😊
Right then…. Blake Smith Daniels is on QE. The Watermelon and Fetta is delicious!
It really is😋
We’re looking at doing the QM2 to the Fjords next April. Would you recommend your cabin or is it worth getting one on a higher level?
And did you get the drinks package? (Hope you do a video regarding that..)
Have a great trip to Asia 🥳
Higher up would probably be better for the fjords as you are less likely to have choppy seas especially once you get into the fjords, we never do the drinks package but that’s just a personal preference, no drinks package video but an excellent blog post detailing all you need to know here. paulandcarolelovetotravel.com/cunard-drinks-prices-and-packages/

Gravy on gammon Carol.... Haven't seen this before....
Lol I will have gravy on anything! 🤣
Thx a lote for your vidéo I do this Transatlantiques withe my Mum in September 2025 for my Birthday an for my 21 years of Hilton compagny ...
I whant to offer that to Mum because it's my Dreams since I 12 years old ...
Have a fabulous time!
@@PaulandCaroleLovetoTravel merci beaucoup...
Love the vlogs really entertaining and informative, I've now subscribed. Hope you don't mind me asking but do you say anywhere how much the whole trip cost including the stay in New York as it's something we would love to do 😊
Thanks for subscribing. Out total holiday cost at that time including flights, hotel was £2500 per person 😃
@@PaulandCaroleLovetoTravel Thanks very much for the reply 😊 That seems very good value for everything included and the overall experience.
They should have put on the invitation and announced prior to the start "the captain dies not shake hands". Its quite the awkward position to put invited guests in.
Would of been a good idea 👍
Loved watching this as for my 60th birthday in 2 more years I will be doing a Queen Mary cruise maybe the won you have just done.
I would like to go on Queen Ann the newest ship have watched some you tubes on her, which looks lovely ❤️🥂🇦🇺
It’s a fitting way to spend a big birthday 🎂
We have sailed on QM2 several times, but not since COVID. What differences are there in the experience now, if any?
Cruising is very much the same now as before COVID.
The captain does the time change during the day so he gets to work an hour less rather than having to lose an hour of sleep. It's more convenient for him - not the customer.
Lol maybe! 🤣🤣
Anyone that wouldn't shake Pauley Morgan's hand is someone I wouldn't want to meet. 😀🚢
Aw you are very kind 😊😊
Oh my god…. 3.30
In is the blonde lady Amanda from The Cruise years ago with Jane McD??
Oh don't know!
I agree the Captain’s behaviour in no shaking hands is odd, even The King shakes hands on every occasion (without gloves)!
The King? Elvis Presley is dead.
I think Paulie Morgan needs to buy a pair of white gloves , and ship them off to that captain Anti shake indeed..add a snarky note too !!!
I can’t deny that I was a little disappointed ☹️
The captain could have handled it differently like a fist bump or something. 😂 To flat out just say that is rude when the event is a meet and greet. Might as well not have it at all then.
You’ll get no arguments from me, can’t vouch for Carole 🤣🤣
I think a bow like in Asian countries would be a great alternative.
We were on the same trip but on week before too Southampton to NYC. Preferred that leg. Our cocktail party was pre dinner and really enjoyed it.
Booking another round trip when the 2026 sailings come available ❤️
A round trip sounds amazing 🤩 really glad you enjoyed your ta
How do you get home from southhamptom?
We got picked up by my nephew 😊😊
Help me to understand what ‘one for the road’ means … 😉
We love all your videos so Not sure why all the complaints about the captain not shaking hands. If that’s the procedures why not just accept and respect it and stop commenting over and over again. I’m sure the captain is a bit more critical to the operation than some of the other staff so there really isn’t a comparison.
We are glad you enjoy our videos.
😆@@PaulandCaroleLovetoTravel
We are with Paul on the Captain. Rude! 😂
Lol! 🤣🤣
It’s a hard call, we prefer the lay out of Victory and Elizabeth but the G32 club and the Corinthia lounge on Mary is fabulous too!
@@PaulandCaroleLovetoTravel Thanks guys! I am looking forward for your comparison video! 🥰🙋♂️
All he had to do was say that.
Question. We have a Princess Grill suite booked for a 13 day cruise this fall. Do we have to pay separately for juice and soda at the table when we are eating? i get the fact that liquor and specialty coffees might be extra but do we pay for soda or juice at meals when booked into Grill dining?
Sorry Barbara we’ve never done done Grill dining so we can’t answer that
@@PaulandCaroleLovetoTraveldid you pay extra for those items at King court and Britannia room?
Soda [carbonated drinks] are an extra cost item. Depending on when/where you book a Grills fare, there _may_ be some included in your room. There are also soft drink packages - but we have not found them a good value.
There are self service machines in the buffet with juice and water and I think lemonade that are free to use.
@@PaulandCaroleLovetoTravelyour vlogs are wonderful by the way.
It's a bummer when the captain isn't happy to meet passengers. They should remember we keep them in a job, ya know... 😉😆
🤣🤣
Don't you lose an hour every day or so? Wouldn't you be better going the other way to gain and hour and still have NY to look forward to?
It’s a personal choice, if you do it that way round you have to fly home and suffer the wrath of jet lag,
Hi guys the captain was probably intimidated by your famous status 😉
I think you could be right 🤣🤣
I would turn it around, you were incredibly lucky getting the northerly passage since it is the most rare one.
@mikemurphy2112 The main iceberg season is late may to end of August, but they do happen outside of this period.
In the US, we have the expression of having been "treated like a red-headed stepchild." Maybe in the UK it should be called being "treated like a red-headed ex-prince?"
😂
You must mean we give the red headed prince everything he could wish for only to have him turn us??
@@michaelthompson6885 Quite so. We have a vlogger here that refers to them as the Markels and her as the Walmart Wallace.
We’ve not heard that expression before 😊😊
Maybe you should've grabbed the grumpy Captain and gave him a kiss on both cheeks; maybe that would'vefloated his boat?
@@PaulandCaroleLovetoTravel
Sorry, make that Walmart Wallis. That makes more sense. I knew what he meant, but i was hearing it, not reading it. Also George The Giant Slayer is doing a live show on the couplevright now! @michaelthompson6885
Ive always found the Captain's cocktail party to be incredibly boring.Agree with Carole re handshaking,on Celebrity they stopped doing it just at the beginning of covid, but they did do that stupid arm bump, sometimes.
We have been to some great Captains party's with really funny speeches and stories, sadly this wasn't one of them!
I can tell Pauly isn’t a people person
Lol he actually is! 😃
The ship can afford to be without the Cruise Director for a few days if her hand-shaking makes her ill; the ship can't run as easily without the Captain! I'd rather have the Captain protect his health than paw at all and sundry.
Yes I take that onboard ’pun intended’ 🤣🤣
Captain could have fist pumped you if he didnt want to shake your hands, its embarrassing for you and rude of the head of the ship to do that, he seems like a person who would get off the ship if it were sinking, watch out. LOL
They say that its best to sail from Southamton to NYC since you will gain time as you sail to NYC and get 25 hours of daylight, I hope to do this crossing on the Queen Mary 2 next year.
I have researched about the QM2 transatlantic crossing it can be done in 4 days and full speed but they Slow the speed down so it take 7 days, so the fact that they take a faster route seems like a conspiracy theory. LOL
You do gain around 5 hours going from Southampton, we did it from NYC as we had spent a week there, it also means you don’t suffer any jet lag.
OMG that captain is just plain rude. To not shake an extended hand is the height of bad manners. If he is a germ phobe, then perhaps he could use a pump of sanitiser after he had greeted everyone. Im with you on that one Paul.
Thanks Lauren , if he had said something I would of been ok, I can’t deny I felt a bit embarrassed standing there like a lemon with my hand out.
If the transatlantic crossing is so popular, 2-3 year waiting list, how come Cunard doesn't have a second ship doing the crossing and how come other cruise lines hasn't cashed in on this financially lucrative cruise. Thank you
We didn't have to wait that long we booked just over a year in advance. Other cruise lines do transatlantic cruises too 😀
Hahaha Grumpy Captain or not, let's face it people just attend those parties for the free drinks! 😉
Oh yes will be interesting to see how you feel going back that way! Have a great cruise!
I’m with Paul. Rude!
Totally 🤣
The captain should have done what our late Queen did and wear gloves.
Yes 😀
It's west to east
Lou Rawls had a voice like melted butter so smooth and totally yummy
That’s so descriptive , love it😊😊
I like TAs. But I like getting an extra hour almost every day going west to east 🕐🕕😊
It’s a valid point but the other way worked for us!
@@PaulandCaroleLovetoTravel agreed. I like finishing the cruise closer to 🏠 home
