  • Classic mini first start in 2 years. I picked this classic mini up in January, after the previous owner gave up on their project.
The car had been standing for a while, so it didn’t get the love and attention it needed. Well I’ve now come here to change that, and I’m doing so I’ll have to undertake many dreaded tasks, some of which I have never done before, and some which I have no idea about what I’m doing.
This video was put together the day after collecting the mini, I was told by the previous owner that the choke and carburettor needs adjusting to get it running.
So my first step was to fiddle about with it, and see if I could get it to even attempt to fire. Well it turned over, but it was clear that there was no / little spark.
So I cleaned the spark plugs, and this seemed to give it hope, however it was evident that the car wasn’t running on all cylinders.
Now either this was a spark plug issue, dodgy distributor cap, faulty HT leads, or something much worse. But either way, I had to figure it out with very little mechanical knowledge.
I started with performing a compression test, which I had never done before. I found that there was fairly equal compression on all cylinders (great news!)
I then placed new spark plugs in, and she fired up instantly. However after half an hour she cut out, and refused to start again. The problem was evident that there is something more to it.
I removed the sparks to find they were black, which gave evidence that the car was running rich. I then approached the carburettor, and found the float was jammed, meaning it was left wide open. I managed to resolve this by stripping it down and cleaning it, and putting it together as it was.
I then posted photos on Facebook asking what was incorrect, and found that the spring was missing from where you adjust the fuel intake, and also where the choke lever connects, it was installed incorrectly.
I resolved these issues, installed a new needle, and had the car running again. Now it was time to replace the oil.
So I go to drain the oil and realise it has been contaminated with petrol. So now there are two possible causes, 1 the fuel pump, or 2 it is from running rich, which we know the car had been.
But I now have the car booked into the garage to have it checked over and want to make sure this isn’t going to happen again, so I have to find a fuel pump. The quickest I can get one for is going to cost me double the online price, but it has to be done an accepted.
The fuel pump is now replaced, and a new oil filter, and fresh new oil.
The far goes into the garage, they offer to do a fine tune on it, and to adjust anything whisky they have it in, and do a health check.
£121 later I get a dreaded list of over 50 things they have picked up that would be ideal to sort.
Several oil leaks, crankshaft oil leak, tappet covers, gear rod, and a couple more
Welding required to several areas including door steps, and boot floor.
    Subframe pear mounts need replacing
Cooling fan incorrectly installed (dodgy electric fan)
Wiring harnesses are dodgy, which I’ve started to sort.
    Speedo pinion suspected failure
    Engine tempt sensor faulty
    Front wings installed poorly
    Perished seals
    Incorrectly mounted washer bottle
    Incorrectly mounted wiper motor
    And a few other things.
So the plan is to make a video based on each of these tasks.

Good to see a classic mini ! I’d love to have one myself as a second car for shows etc.
