I left Pakistan for the US 33 years ago but Pakistani TV serials and starting then the pop music scene in Pakistan was in my humble opinion ahead of India. Obviously that was then. But now recently I have found Pakistani music again via the web and it has gotten even better and that in a society where music is not exactly seen as a great career path. In India actually they have better appreciation for music but their Bollywood culture has chased western culture so blindly that they have forgotten that they are from the sub-continent of India where they already have a unique and great tradition of music, poetry and literature. As a result naturally many Indians are finding this in Pakistani artists who are talented when Bollywood is failing them to a degree. That's what it seems like to me. On the other hand this shows that North Indian culture and Eastern Pakistani culture is almost the same and culture has its own life and art is a deep expression of the culture and man made boundaries and nation states do not stop it.
India has a huge number of pure classical musicians all over the country. They have a large following and their concerts/ RUclips channels attract hundreds of thousands of viewers. However, this set of artists do not venture into Bollywood. Similarly there are a large number of films/ plays in regional languages like Marathi/ Malayalam/ Bengali/ Tamil/ Telugu/ Kannada etc . A lot of the products from the regional genre are vastly superior to Bollywood trash, in aesthetics, music, etc. Films like Court, Sayarat in Marathi have won international acclaim in Europe/ NA etc.

I knew about the Indian classical music (Hindustani music) and dance having a big audience in India but I was more focusing in my comment on the popular side. I think that is the side where Pakistani artists have an edge. I am a fan of a fusion group called Shakti with John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain etc. They are actually doing a tour right now after decades. The level of virtuosity is on its own level.

@@arunsar7893 Yes I discovered Coke studio, Pepsi Battle of Bands, Levis and Velo Sound studio within last 2 years and was pleasantly surprised. Found out that since I left 33 years ago, so many universities and colleges have started offering programs in music and musicology in Pakistan. There were hardly any back then. My cousin actually moved to the US and went to Julliard and Berklee to learn music and is a known Jazz guitarist now in NYC. He actually went to study with an ustad in India after Berklee for a while.
This is great, both countries support each other talents to grow and shine, I remember BB Ki wines was an instant hit in Pakistan first and then later on in India. Way to go desi folks!

I remember in late 2000, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan had a concert in the UK at Hounslow Civic Centre. Hardly 50 people turned up. It was only after his success in India, that things changed for him. The appreciation in Pakistan needs to be more for their artists and the audiences need to support them. Lahore Music Forum was another good initiative set up but lack of classical music listeners ruined it.

I don’t know about the contribution part, but Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan gave classes in top universities in America and other places for Qawali and classical music. The thing is Pakistan doesn’t have such platforms so musicians went to west to teach their musical knowledge.

I remember in late 2000, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan had a concert in the UK at Hounslow Civic Centre. Hardly 50 people turned up. It was only after his success in India, that things changed for him. The appreciation in Pakistan needs to be more for their artists and the audiences need to support them. Lahore Music Forum was another good initiative set up but lack of classical music listeners ruined it.
