How does your windows do with the stove being so close? I keep seeing that you wanna be 3ft away from windows. I'm just asking because I'm wanting to install a wood stove and it seems about the same as yours from a window.
we were really limited with where we could place our stove so when i researched the type of stove i wanted i was specifically searching for a stove that is built for small space living - when you start to look into it Different stoves have different options. Our stove -and many in the englander range come with rear and side heat shields meaning the clearances can be tighter. If you look into stoves built for mobile homes then you will find they are built differently. When we first installed ours i was going to change our window curtains out for a blind, and i was checking all the time the stove was on to see if heat was transferring and they barely get warm. My hubs said you can actually touch the back of the stove when its on ( not that i've tried it lol) but to answer your question its designed for a closer clearance that what is standard. You still want to follow the clearances recommended in the install manual though. Also make sure you check part 2 of the install video because Caleb re did the chimney through the roof in terms of the way he flashed with the shingles. Hope this helps!
Yes it leaked!! I asked Him why he did it like that but he said he thought the shingles would tear if he had lifted them… we’ve actually just finished redoing it as we added a porch and re shingled the whole roof- will post the new vid soon! Thanks for your comment 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Have you had any issues with ice dams forming? We also have a vaulted ceiling and I'm nervous to install the wood stove as someone warned us that a wood stove's heat can cause ice dams on vaulted ceilings due to there not being an attic/increased insulation...
@@benrichardsonben1276 no i have not heard that- we have used it for 3 winters now with no issue- we do have a low roof so its easy to get up there when it snows and we do shovel snow off the roof - we are in zone 6a so it hits -20 at times hope that helps
Great video and just want to say two things. Nice ladder with the steps on both sides and the shingles ,even old ones, can be gotten loose with a mud knife or anything to cut that goop that keeps the shingle down.the thinner the spatula the better. I subscribed !!
sorry i missed this comment! Thankyou! We did a follow up to this video to "redo" the shingles and chimney flashing. It looks much cleaner now!! not as much goop and no leaks!
This was a very helpful video but definitely don't install flashing that way as it will leak. To properly install that type of flashing, you would need to remove some of the shingles above the chimney pipe and reset them over the top of the flashing. You also would need to be careful how it gets nailed in, if the nails are in the wrong spots, it could leak.

@@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse I had a wood stove and fire place store in Quebec during the early eighties… and Im proud to say the very first Vermont Castings Canadian dealer …the team installed a lot of prefab chimneys and it was with manufacturers instructions we didn’t get call backs. The installer shouldn’t learn on your dime …call him back and have him fix it. One other note .. did you or do you need to have it added to your house insurance ? In Canada when you install a solid fuel appliance, its a good idea to let your home insurer know…then it get added to your policy just in case ..
I'm sorry i missed your comment - all the links for products are in the video description - the chimney ( the silver part above the roof) came part from home depot and part from tractor supply but its all the same brand. The length of the chimney will vary from install to install because you need to clear the apex of your roof by a certain amount to make sure you get a good draw in your flu. If you look up the 321 rule for chimneys it says it has to be 3 feet clear of where you penetrate the roof and 2 feet taller than any part of the bulding that is within 10 feet. We were close to the apex of our roof so we had to build up the chimney to make it 2 feet taller if that makes sense. Inside the house with the stove pipe i think the general rule of thumb is around 10 feet ( the longer your chimney the stronger the draft) but you can also get stoves with an oxygen intake to help with that aaaand then there are rear exiting stoves... hope that helps some!!
We werent sure about that given the stove needs the chimney to create the draw so didnt think it would get hot enough to do what was needed before install… it did stink on the first few burns though 🤷🏼♀️
I could not find the name of the woodstove you purchased can you please give me the name of the woodstove purchase and the link. I clicked on the link and it says it does not exist..
@@annaamador2120 i think the links got broken when home depot stopped stocking it. The stove is called an englander wood burning stove - available at tractor supply currently
What about if your attic space is taller the the roof box? My distance from ceiling to roof is 3 f5 of attic. Do i just use a double wall insulated pipe to make up the space distance to the roof?
Not really- i went there for triple wall and they didn’t have what i needed- the gentleman seemed genuinely happy to talk me through what we needed… would have happily given them our business if they had the parts but they didnt… even he said to try the box stores !
We used an adhesive called “through the roof” and we should have tucked the top half of the collar under the shingles ( read all the comments) but the reason we didnt is because the shingles are in bad shape and Caleb thought they would tear by trying to lift them… so really we need to take it off and re do it - but yeah tuck your collar under the shingles… the adhesive mentioned is really good
We are not experts but from the research we did, it seems to depend on the make and model of the stove and also the clearance/distance to the wall. The model we got does not give out a great heat output to the rear so for us any wall tile or stone we put up would be for decorative reasons
yes! Great point - we chose this set up because we are in 'small space living' and didn't have a lot of options for where to place the stove so we needed closer clearances.
Metal mounting box should have been trimmed all the way around for support instead of cutting the front and back off, it gives extra support for the chimney especially in high winds, the round chimney flashing cover should have been slid under the top shingles so they cover the top allowing water to run over it and down, now you just made a place in your roof that will leak very soon because the top isn't covered by the shingles, and no amount of silicone will stop it unless done right, it tells you in the instructions, keep an eye on it before your roof, and ceiling start rotting and causing black mold, as well as cracks in the metal joints because there's no upper and lower support because you cut it off instead of trimming it like you did the sides and screwing it down.
please add a course of galv under the shingles lapped over the top of the jack flashing. wouldn't hurt to bib the sides with the same sheet galv before that
Because of the make and model and also the square footage of where we were installing it, this stove didn't need cold air intake, it draws from the surroundings. However we do crack the window when the stove is on, mostly because it gets so warm we need cold air flow too !! lol - but yes some other stoves require a pipe through the wall to bring cold air in. I remember reading about that when i was choosing which stove to purchase.
thankyou ! Sorry i didn't see this comment - yes you are correct - we did a follow up and re-shingled the whole roof and re did the flashing - think i put the link in the description!
Great to see someone actually DIY an install; the fireplace shops charge a lot of money for this relatively medium difficulty project. its not rocket science. Probably a good idea to check local codes. In Canada, the chimney height is minimum of 3 feet, and with that pitched roof you should have been about 5 feet and with braces (for Canadian code). Since kits come in 4 ft sections (Excel kit) you would have ordered 8 feet of chimney from the start. in other words, the first instal was obviously too short. Also, the chimney support box distance from the inside ceiling needs a minimum clearance; this instal is probably very close to the minimum. Of course, the stove clearances and floor protection areas (particularly if you have carpet) also need to be checked.
thankyou !! Sorry i missed this comment!! We did a follow up video because we also need to re do the flashing ( and explained that in the video - also gave us a chance to clean the pipe out and see what sort of creosote build up there was) as to clearances yes - i am from the UK where you can't sneeze without a code ( lol) and live in rural Missouri where there is basically no code ( eek) so i try to do my homework!! We had a challenge with this "shouse" being so small and needed to work with closer clearances which we overcame by using double wall pipe and stove designed with a rear heat sheild, but as to the chimney we did build it up ( i think i showed that in the end) since we were within 10 feet of the roof peak we needed to go 2 ft taller than the peak - so we added 3 more sections of chimney above the roof, i think we have 8 or 9 ft inside of stove pipe. The total length of the chimney from the top to the base of stove pipe seems to have a good draw and i def learned more about chimneys than i ever thought i would ! lol.

If there are truly "independent" reviews, I'd like to know where they are. Seems every site I've been to says that they "may get a small commission" if you buy a stove through their site. Huge conflict of interest. Of course they're going to recommend stoves that get a commission for! That's why there's NO agreement on best stoves!
hardly ! We are promoting what we know like and trust. Lol we would hardly have gone to the lengths of installing a stove we didn't feel good about just to earn a 0.2% commission from amazon!! That would be a conflict of "our interests" - also it takes hours of editing and filming to put videos together for other people to consume for free - there has to be some ability to earn income somewhere along the line or the only people who would have time to make content are those who don't need to earn a living - and that is not us!!
Bruh your flashing job is so bad. You gotta tuck the back flap of the pipe boot under shingle. You can't just caulk it. That's gonna leak. Call a roofer sometime. It is worth the money.
This is not how you want to install the roof saddle, that, is wrong. That saddle top and sides must be under the shingles. You may have to cut back the shingles or heat them a bit to bend them. the bottom edge is the only part that sits on top of the shingles. More important, the stove clearances from the combustible materials are way too close, no way are they safe.
Thanks Keith- we posted a follow up video of tucking the flashing under the shingles in tbe spring when we re did the roof- there is a note to explain in the description… as to the clearances this is per instal manual, our stove is built for mobile homes and has side and rear heat shields together with double wall pipe- there is no heat from the back of this stove during a full burn- all heat from top and front

Right!!😂 there is like no way back again 🙈🙈🙈
Yes, that does worry me.
Measure 3x cut once.
Also a prayer or promise to pay it forward can help. 😊
Did the duravent kit come with the stainless pipe (triple walled?)that extended out of the ceiling box? I’m looking at the kits but the pictures don’t show it.
No, we bought the “through the roof kit” first which was the box and fittings for the ceiling and attic space and that was separate to the triple wall chimney that you slide into it from above ( which we also bought 2 extensions for to get the correct chimney length for a good draw)
@@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse do you recall the piece you bought where you bought it from? I’m just trying to get everything I need before I have a hole in the roof and I’m incomplete without having everything I need.

great info, thank you for sharing!
Very informative, thanks a lot
if you have a dry wall cieling , dont you need to have an insulated pipe anyway??????
Cool to watch the project. Thanks for posting. I wouldn't trust the silicone to keep leaks from coming. I would be better if you lifted the shingles and slid the flashing underneath. (I've been there before!)
thankyou, yes we realised the error - see caption... we did a follow up video when we had the funds to reshingle the roof and add a mud room ! thanks for watching
Obviously I'm still learning... But 8:00 what kind of saw is that? I've seen similar. But not quite that
It’s called a nibbler! It’s essentially the same as tin snips with a motor! Designed for cutting tin… also read the caption on this video if you are following the DIY as we had to redo the flashing shown in a follow up video
Great family, congratulations! We subscribed.. I love what you're building over there. My wife and I live in Denver and we want OUT! It's nerve wracking and we've been looking for property and we're already half packed and ready to go even though we don't have a place yet! Your video is clear and easy to understand. You didn't show how you came up with the precise place to make your first penetration in the ceiling. I imagine you placed the stove, used a plumb bob to mark the center, figured your square dimensions then did the same under the sheathing. I just collapsed the telescoping flu on my stove and used fat wood to start a fire and it stunk to high heaven and I noticed smoke was escaping at the ceiling penetration. I must've untwisted it..Nice job and my wife and I will see other videos on your channel...
awww thanks for your comment - i totally missed it!! Hope you have found your dream place by now ! Thanks for your encouragement - yeah Caleb used a lazer to find his point but i missed him doing that ( he doesn't always wait for the camera - lol!) We were pretty limited with where we could put our stove due to this shouse being so small - and to get the correct height of the chimney and clearance above the roof apex we needed to be pretty close to the peak of the roof to ensure a good draw on the flu. Thanks for your comment !

Things I don't even notice...clearly it takes one to know one so i appreciate you highlighting these trade skills!! By the way we have a follow up video as he did flub on the flashing - we re did it in the spring
Best DIY video ever, only one thing the curtain seems a bit close.
@@TheFarmerintraining thankyou! Yes we get a few comments on the curtain i should have mentioned the stove we got is made for mobile homes so it has plates on the back and sides so heat output is only front and top… so the curtains dont even get warm!
I’m ready to purchase one now. Will it be ready to use from purchase. I been going to different fireplace stores, and they charge for the door, the fire box, and unit start at 2k
@@larryholland1466 i put the list of everything we purchased in the show notes.. after you get the stove you need the stove pipe, chimney pipe, through the roof kit and your floor pad
When putting stove pipe together is it best to have the male end down? So the creole drips out of the chimney and you don 't have a fire.
yes for single wall - double wall is different because the single wall is inside!! It took me a while to figure it out - but the pipes had arrows on indicating the flu goes up and the creosote always needs to run down ??? is that what your saying ?
So I was wondering did it leak as I thought it would not tucking underneath shingles
Yes it leaked!! I asked
Him why he did it like that but he said he thought the shingles would tear if he had lifted them… we’ve actually just finished redoing it as we added a porch and re shingled the whole roof- will post the new vid soon! Thanks for your comment 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Does the fireplace have a built in damper? Or does your pipe have the damper?
the stove has a damper - just posted a new video on cleaning the chimney pipe - i think Caleb shows the damper in that video!
Curious.Do the sheet metal screws penatrate through the inner wall of the double wall stove pipe? Thanks.
They are pretty short so i wouldnt think so- i think they go through the outer wall and into the cuff of the pipe your inserting if that makes sense?!
Link to the pellet stove? Name brand? I love the mountains on the front. Did it come like that or is that an add-on to your glass door?

@@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse I had a wood stove and fire place store in Quebec during the early eighties… and Im proud to say the very first Vermont Castings Canadian dealer …the team installed a lot of prefab chimneys and it was with manufacturers instructions we didn’t get call backs.

One other note .. did you or do you need to have it added to your house insurance ? In Canada when you install a solid fuel appliance, its a good idea to let your home insurer know…then it get added to your policy just in case ..

Excellent Video. Question - what was the length of the chimney and where did you get it from?
@@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse no issue. I ended up getting what you used and have already installed it. Thanks
I did the first burn of my stove outside to cure the paint boy am I glad I did
We werent sure about that given the stove needs the chimney to create the draw so didnt think it would get hot enough to do what was needed before install… it did stink on the first few burns though 🤷🏼♀️
I don't know how windy it gets where you live, but chimney braces might help stabilize the chimney.
we get some good winds but the chimney ( this far has been ok) perhaps being so narrow it doesn't create much resistance ....
Code is 5’ and higher require roof bracing
You guys are awesome.
Thankyou!! Nicest comment on this thread 😂🙌🏻🙌🏻
What about if your attic space is taller the the roof box? My distance from ceiling to roof is 3 f5 of attic. Do i just use a double wall insulated pipe to make up the space distance to the roof?
sorry i didn't see this question - but i wouldn't be able to give you an answer lol - we are just learning too- i'd love to hear what you learned?
What tool are you using to cut the square out of the ceiling?
Called an oscillating tool
thank you Scott :-) I was trying to remember the name of it lol!
So you buy from Home Depot and Lowe’s, but boogie on down to the expert shop for free advice. Great job.
Not really- i went there for triple wall and they didn’t have what i needed- the gentleman seemed genuinely happy to talk me through what we needed… would have happily given them our business if they had the parts but they didnt… even he said to try the box stores !
How did you calk the flashing collar to the flue on the roof and what material did you use ?
We used an adhesive called “through the roof” and we should have tucked the top half of the collar under the shingles ( read all the comments) but the reason we didnt is because the shingles are in bad shape and Caleb thought they would tear by trying to lift them… so really we need to take it off and re do it - but yeah tuck your collar under the shingles… the adhesive mentioned is really good
do you have to do anything to wall behind it?
We are not experts but from the research we did, it seems to depend on the make and model of the stove and also the clearance/distance to the wall. The model we got does not give out a great heat output to the rear so for us any wall tile or stone we put up would be for decorative reasons
Very helpful- many thanks!
Double wall pipe also allows you to get much closer to a combustible wall
yes! Great point - we chose this set up because we are in 'small space living' and didn't have a lot of options for where to place the stove so we needed closer clearances.
Metal mounting box should have been trimmed all the way around for support instead of cutting the front and back off, it gives extra support for the chimney especially in high winds, the round chimney flashing cover should have been slid under the top shingles so they cover the top allowing water to run over it and down, now you just made a place in your roof that will leak very soon because the top isn't covered by the shingles, and no amount of silicone will stop it unless done right, it tells you in the instructions, keep an eye on it before your roof, and ceiling start rotting and causing black mold, as well as cracks in the metal joints because there's no upper and lower support because you cut it off instead of trimming it like you did the sides and screwing it down.
please add a course of galv under the shingles lapped over the top of the jack flashing. wouldn't hurt to bib the sides with the same sheet galv before that
thankyou ! sorry i missed this comment - we did a follow up video which is linked in the description box
A good roofer will cover the whole flashing with shingles and you won't see any flashing on all vents .
what about a cold air combustion intake?
Because of the make and model and also the square footage of where we were installing it, this stove didn't need cold air intake, it draws from the surroundings. However we do crack the window when the stove is on, mostly because it gets so warm we need cold air flow too !! lol - but yes some other stoves require a pipe through the wall to bring cold air in. I remember reading about that when i was choosing which stove to purchase.
Good job! But should have tucked the piece on the roof under the shingles instead. I'll be doing one myself before long.
The total length of the chimney from the top to the base of stove pipe seems to have a good draw and i def learned more about chimneys than i ever thought i would ! lol.
Its a great vid, but the install was wrong on the flashing part
yeah - I've seen all the comments and showed Caleb, we need to re do it - we have had a small but persistent leak !! one way to learn ! Thankful for other peoples knowledge - follow up video needed !!

Hoping you have removed the curtain for your safety

That’ll leak. Guaranteed.
This is 100% what not to do.
Remove shingles and cover , silicone will fail and this will leak , not if it will leak , when.

That is going to allow water to roll down onto your stove...
Bruh your flashing job is so bad. You gotta tuck the back flap of the pipe boot under shingle. You can't just caulk it. That's gonna leak. Call a roofer sometime. It is worth the money.
Hey Bruh did someone teach you how to be churlish or does it just come naturally for you?
Your roof is going to leak
it did! Caleb realised his error - see caption and link to follow up video where we reshingled the roof and added a mud room! thanks for watching!
Yes yes, lesson learned about the flashing, now the know-it-all crude trolls need to chill, I'm sure your first install wasn't prime perfect !
