the 4.0 nissan pathfinder engine was only used for like a month or two to fill in while the 3.8 motor was worked on and parts where built for it. the car did not do so good on round 1 with the nissan motor so it was pulled out right away after the 3.8 lambda v6 was complete, it has been running on a fully built 3.8 turbocharged hyundai engine making 600hp for a long time now and also set a new world record at pikes peak. There is a mid engine hyundai tau V8 Gencoupe in the works by RMR now.
@FID3R I understand the car is now equipped with the Hyundai motor. But just so EVERYONE COMMENTING IS CLEAR, the car debuted at Long Beach with a "4 Liter turbo-charged Nissan V6" as the video says at 1:00. This was only due to a lack of development time (Rhys Millen Racing received the car only 6 weeks prior to the Long Beach event) and it was infact later replaced by the motor you're referring to, sometime in later.
In this video, they used a VQ40DE with a Turbo on it. They've only re-installed the Hyundai Lambda V6 back in it just recently (from what I've been reading).
The video state's that it's a 4liter. On their website it further goes on to say that it's a modded, rebored and portered version of the 3.7 liter v6 found in the 370Z and G37
I love the lines on this coupe! And I dont know why all the hatting on Hyundai, most improved motor company in the last 10 years in my oppinion. And I optioned out one on edmonds and i got a completly loaded 2.0T with the track pack (upgraded suspension and BREMBOS!) for under 25k :)
True said WickedChris! The Hyundai Lambda 3.8 is a fairly new engine released in the U.S. Market, although it's featured in a few Hyundai and Kia products. (e.g. Kia Borrego, Hyundai Entourage e.t.c.) In my opinion, it's a great engine for it's size and power ratings, although an engine of that size, i'd like to see it pump out at least 330h.p. in stock form, and it could probably be done with a little ECU tweaking, upgrading of the injectors/fuel rails/fuel pump and other minor stuff.
This is cool control. This is engineered elegance. This is drifting done right. This is what it's like to ride in the world's most advanced drift car: Rhys Millen's 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe. What is surprising is the level of preparation it takes to make a drift car competitive in 2009. Of course it gives back the glory days of American rally racing.
@BlackCavalier52 no they didnt The 3.8 L (3778 cc) version produces 265 PS (196 kW) and 266 ft·lbf (353 Nm). It has a 96 mm (3.8 in) bore and 87 mm (3.4 in) stroke. The Lambda RS 3800 (Rear-drive Sport) longitudinal Lamda engine variant can be found in the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe. In this application power is rated at: 306 hp (228 kW) @ 6300 rpm, and 266 lb·ft (361 N·m) of torque at 4700 rpm. The engine is an all aluminum mill, featuring DOHC and 24 valves.
What I was hoping for RMR using is their 2.0 Turbo 4 Banger. If i'm not mistaken, the engine is a GEMA based engine and the engine block (crankcase) is the same as the 4B11T (the engine in the Mitsubishi Evo X). The only difference is the upper half of the engine (heads, intake plenum, exhaust manifold, turbocharger e.t.c.)
the 2.0 is basically like the new evo 10 engine(detuned). Hyundai worked with Mitsubishi to develop the 2.0T for the Genesis Coupe. Talk is the 4 cyl is the better choice as it has lots of potential.
It WAS a Nissan motor (VQ) until they received the engine from Hyundai. Now it's a nearly bone stock 3.8 Lambda with a turbo, it's producing 600whp (I said nearly bone stock because it has CAM, the rest of the internals were not modified yet).
Dang, that is crazy. The price difference between Canada and the US is insane. Aside from the Lexus IS-F, I doubt Toyota will come out with a sports car for the US market to compete with other sport coupes in the 25k-40k range. They've cut down TRD to half the staff and budget for 09' & 10'. I'd love to see a Supra replacement someday, but I doubt that will happen until we're out of the recession.
Ah well this shit is too confusing lol Rhys Millen should try to tweak out a version of the Theta II engine someday and see what the engine is really capable of. Thanks for the insight, Chris. I learned something new today.
So true, hopefully times change. Maybe we'll see a hybrid sports car. Toyota FT-HS will probably be the next Supra if that ever gets to it. What I'd like to see in the future if it ever happens. New NSX vs New Supra vs R35 Skyline GT-R
yeah, that was then , this is now. if the genesis coupe would have been out then it would be a whole different game. the genesis coupe is just the start , the next cool car will be the upcoming tiburon replacement (the gencoupe is not the tibs replacement), it will be a small turbocharged hatch fully loaded with all the technology you can think of.
the nissan pathfinder engine is no longer there, it was just for the first month till the hyundai engine was built to make 500hp. the hyundai 3.8 v6 turbo was the one that let him smash a new world record at pikes peak.
in my opinio the engine is completely built up for this car with some parts of the nissan v6 there is also a race muffler which would never been allowed on the streets and also a sharp camshaft these 3 things make this car sounds like that i think sry cant answer your 2. question
I'm pretty sure that they also stuck in the Nissan engine simply because it's tried and true, was easy to mount up, and they're probably still developing the Genesis motor (since I'm sure noone has ever modified one).
This car is amazing, I never expected it to be this good for the price, Nissan should have something to compete with this. Bring back the Silvia (240 SX) anyone?
the rear bumper part is funny, but you are all forgetting that on all the drift cars everything is aftermarket on them, there is nothing stock on these cars.
it isn't anymore. They just didn't have the R&D time to tune an engine they were unfamiliar with, so they threw an engine they'd been tuning for years in there, just to get it moving. Now they've had the time, they have put the hyundai engine back in, making just as much power as that nissan one
Both projects have been canceled due to the tough times. :( Both cars would of been amazing, for the Silvia all they have to do is use the 370Z frame with a smaller engine or lower end stuff if they really wanted to make a Silvia.
no, not both cars, only the Nissan car, Toyota confirmed that the car was not going to be delayed anymore and everything is going according to plan, that we could hope to see it in 2010-2011, Confirmed =D
There was not enough time to fully build the hyundai engine and enter this year for competition, so a temp nissan engine had to fill the spot in order for the genesis to compete this year, currently the 3.8 is getting fully built to outperform the nissan engine later this year.
The excuse is that they didn't have enough R&D time with the Hyundai Tau engine, but there's no way they can get more power out of the Tau vs a VQ turboed and ported to 4.0 litres.
The 4B11 and the Theta II have the same "engine block" I know that both motors are NOT the same, chris, but the crankcases are the same. The upper half (heads/valves/cams/internals) are completely all different. correct me if i'm wrong though. **shrugs**
This car is a NISSAN that looks like a Genesis. Hyundai only sponsor's the race car. The only question I have is.... Does the FACTORY issue Genesis come front rwd or awd??? This video is cool!
most of you posting on this video clearly do not understand what makes a drift car "good" vs "bad". just because its called a Hyundai doesn't mean its automatically going to suck. Its got the power, and the performance to compete well in the D1 circuit.
@awwwonderful I love what Ken Block has done to put rallying more into mainstream and his videos are sweet - but RWD and AWD are very different. Rhys really has some amazing talent.
if memory serves right...on Tanner Foust TC...it was a TRD(Toyota Racing Development) engine made for NASCAR craftsman truck series, and the drivetrain is from a supra....therefore it's not against the rule that you mentioned...though I'm not sure how this team works out the rule with Formula D peace
hehe no, in fact the 4B11 is a semi-closed deck and the Theta is an open deck (check wikipedia for the differences). Also the 4B11 features bigger oil and coolant pass. As I said, the 4B11 is an upgraded Theta that can hold more HP. To see a video about open vs closed deck bloc see the youtube vid : watch?v=KhGu0dciwBo The Theta and 4B11 are from the same "blueprints" but the 4B11 had extended optimization made to it.
The only stock piece is a rear spoiler - guys, it fails... like they are saying IN ORDER TO MAKE A CAR OF IT YOU REPLACE THE ENGINE AND SUSPENSION... why dont you just take this spoiler off and install it on GTR for example ?
Nissan canceled it, or did they? idk, but they were testing a test mule which was a smaller shorter version of the 350Z, and they have spyshots and all, but i dont know what the status on that one is...but what i do know is that Toyota/Subaru are bringing back the "AE86" style car (which i'm a total fanboy of xD) due 2010 =]
@KmAlbum Maybe but funny it doesn't have the nissan 350z or 370z engine. A 4.0 v6 from a nissan was probably from the frontier pickup truck...Although still weird that it's a nissan engine. Weird too that you mention a van that Hyundai sells. After looking at their website, they don't actually make/sell a van...
I know. I meant the car, the stock car. If you have to make a drift car out of all carbon fiber then you might as well start with a lighter car. Sorry I worded that weird.
This car is currently on a Nissan Powerplant. Basically a modded version of the 3.7 liter V6 found in the 370Z. That engine, along with the new version found in the GT-R are considered to be among the most advanced V6 engines in the world from a performance stand point. Hyundai's V6 in a Genesis Coupe may come close in HP and Torque ratings but the power curves don't come close. That's one of the reasons why the 370Z beats the Genesis Coupe in every performance category.
That nissan engine was temporal. It was truown away once hyundai provided its 3.8L which is the engine Rhys Millen beat the world recotd at Pikes peaks... any doubt now???
hi, bit off topic but i wanna get a body kit for my tiburon. i live in canada (cold winters) so i was wondering if fiberglass body kits are ok, i heard that they will crack and polurathane is pretty much the only choice. i dont plan on hitting anything anytime soon but if they get so fragile in the winter urathane might be the only way to go. any input on this? please send me an e-mail! tnx :)
I'm seriously impressed with what this car can do!
This car is fantastic!!! Hyundai have been doing rather well. They have improved so much.
the 4.0 nissan pathfinder engine was only used for like a month or two to fill in while the 3.8 motor was worked on and parts where built for it. the car did not do so good on round 1 with the nissan motor so it was pulled out right away after the 3.8 lambda v6 was complete, it has been running on a fully built 3.8 turbocharged hyundai engine making 600hp for a long time now and also set a new world record at pikes peak.

OMG, I love the sound that these drift cars make when they redline :O OH EM GEE.
You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.
@FID3R I understand the car is now equipped with the Hyundai motor. But just so EVERYONE COMMENTING IS CLEAR, the car debuted at Long Beach with a "4 Liter turbo-charged Nissan V6" as the video says at 1:00.

this guy does everything!! what's he gonna do next he's already done a backflip in a truck!
The 3.7 Liter V6 from Nissan was porter to measure up to 4 liters. You can buy the 3.7 Liter V6 by contacting Nissan directly.
Hyundai is steppin it up man!
This is cool control. This is engineered elegance. This is drifting done right. Drifting is like the WWF for cars.
thanks.. i know that body kits have a purpose on racing cars, but i was talking about a nearly stock car owned by someone :)
What I was hoping for RMR using is their 2.0 Turbo 4 Banger.

nice car and nice drift
if a car has had an engine swap then it is no longer the car it claims to be.
I think everyones missing the point about whether its a Nissan or a Hyundai, just stop, LOOK AT THE GOD DAMN THING its a beauty
@mozleyman There is one stock part..the rear bumper!
the 2.0 is basically like the new evo 10 engine(detuned). Hyundai worked with Mitsubishi to develop the 2.0T for the Genesis Coupe. Talk is the 4 cyl is the better choice as it has lots of potential.

nice driving
i hate to say that i like hyundai, but i really do. they've been making some great cars. and they look good too!!! damn them!!!
awesome... i love drifting..
Yup, you can really notice that on the right front tire.
in my opinio the engine is completely built up for this car with some parts of the nissan v6 there is also a race muffler which would never been allowed on the streets and also a sharp camshaft these 3 things make this car sounds like that i think sry cant answer your 2. question
@mozleyman
you know why it doesnt have any stock parts? its a race car,
^^ cool drifter. i like it :}
I see you can say that with complete confidence, cant you.
All carbon fiber drift car? Dayum. That thing must be HEAVY.
I'm pretty sure that they also stuck in the Nissan engine simply because it's tried and true, was easy to mount up, and they're probably still developing the Genesis motor (since I'm sure noone has ever modified one).
Han: You're representing me now. What you think, I'm gonna let you roll in a Hyundai?
This car is amazing, I never expected it to be this good for the price, Nissan should have something to compete with this.
Bring back the Silvia (240 SX) anyone?
Hyundai Genesis shell*
the rear bumper part is funny, but you are all forgetting that on all the drift cars everything is aftermarket on them, there is nothing stock on these cars.
i havent seen many cars drift like this one, it looks so sexxy when it drifts lol
WooHoo! GO HYUDAI GENESIS! HYUNDAI'S FIRST FR CAR.

I think this car has potential. Can't wait to see this guy and Samuel hubenette go head to head. But I think Samuel can take him.
very nice car

why is the rear of the car so low? its blatenly lower than the front.
This is a good car for the money
@alwaysopen is NASCAR sprint cup with the actually NASCARS?
The 4B11 and the Theta II have the same "engine block"

how do the tyres last? are they a special compound or somethin cause theyd shred so fast..
im liking this hyundai this is one car i would like to drive

@xXLinkinParkXxYaby Its a Hundai Genesis, not a Tiburon, and its got a Nissan engine. It kinda says on the video, and on the title
@awwwonderful I love what Ken Block has done to put rallying more into mainstream and his videos are sweet - but RWD and AWD are very different. Rhys really has some amazing talent.
It is possible to come what. Is it a toy of the radio control?
if memory serves right...on Tanner Foust TC...it was a TRD(Toyota Racing Development) engine made for NASCAR craftsman truck series, and the drivetrain is from a supra....therefore it's not against the rule that you mentioned...though I'm not sure how this team works out the rule with Formula D
peace
@xxMafia101 All sorts of racing: Bikes, boats, cars, planes, running... just about any competition sport.

really.... hmmm... i think i saw a 2.0T emblem on one the other day. I heard this car was a likely contender for the G35. thanks for the reply
I know. I meant the car, the stock car. If you have to make a drift car out of all carbon fiber then you might as well start with a lighter car.
Sorry I worded that weird.
question how are c5 z06 in drifting? good? average? not so good? thanks
@SuperSpetnaz thats james and the giant peach!
you mean the vh and vq35de?
@Darkstar4100
People have been powersliding for centuries. How is this a recently new sport?
interesting new direction for Hyundai. anyone agree?
@f23racer sure. Is my opinion.
does nissan and hyundai work together or somethin?
This car is currently on a Nissan Powerplant. Basically a modded version of the 3.7 liter V6 found in the 370Z. That's one of the reasons why the 370Z beats the Genesis Coupe in every performance category.
Now i'm a Hyundai Fan
Rhys Millen drifted a stock Genesis Coupe for the commercials and it drifts quite well.
Of course you need the skills, but that's another story.
@hernandadmx dude it's the same engine but they stroke it to 4.1
and the info about the Nissan engine is wrong
That nissan engine was temporal. It was truown away once hyundai provided its 3.8L which is the engine Rhys Millen beat the world recotd at Pikes peaks... any doubt now???
i cant believe Hyundai is sponsoring a car that has an Nissan engine
I love the smell of burning rubber in the morning
I think Edmunds has made another mistake. That bumper isn't stock. Maybe he meant the rear deck lid aka TRUNK.
looks like it makes a really good drift cars. but can we get some bigger wheels on it damn.
@PhrozenPhlanges Hyundai ... is the problem not the model.. go impreza or evo perhaps?
hi, bit off topic but i wanna get a body kit for my tiburon. i live in canada (cold winters) so i was wondering if fiberglass body kits are ok, i heard that they will crack and polurathane is pretty much the only choice. i dont plan on hitting anything anytime soon but if they get so fragile in the winter urathane might be the only way to go. any input on this? please send me an e-mail! tnx :)
@momay69 its the same 3.8 bored out to 4.1
dam he drift hella good with dat car
4.0L nissan engine? turbo gt-r engine?
How would I want a hyungai if this is a nissan?
So they got two units running?
A 4 Cylinder Theta Powered Machine and a V6 Lambda Powered Machine???
