That being making music (not for fame but out of passion), working to pay bills (not get rich), and holding onto the trust of the people around me through genuine means. I know all that sounds corny af, but it's true. And it took a lot of work to get there. I was bouncing on n out off detox's and rehabs for the last 5 years of my addictions before I made it. The 12 steps did it for me the most. Taking the step from detox to commiting to an actual rehab was the first step, then actually listening and soaking in the information there for 30 days, and finally getting a sponsor and staying dedicated to the 12 steps after. IOP helped a lot too. Keep it mind, I wasn't just a partier. Even though it started out that way. First I was an alcoholic who partied, smoked weed, and casual took pills. But before I knew it at 19yo I was sleeping on the streets dopesick, shooting meth n heroin over a blunt in the morning for my withdrawals, smoking crack and fentanyl throughout the day to keep my high going, and polishing it off with a 40, a pill and a blunt to go to sleep. Now I'm 25 with making 18.50/hr+bonuses and tips, own a car, support my family and chase my dreams on a daily bases. So it's possible, and it came from falling in love with a different side of life while realizing I don't have to necessarily change my core self to live that way. I might genuinely be a completely different person now, but I still wear patched pants, spiked vests and play in punk bands for parties while being a working professional and staying sober ykwim
Good for him. It's easy to turn your life around for a minute but then ultimately revert back. So it's good to see someone stick with the progression and truly change.

I was working at Walmart for a short stint about 2 years ago as a lower tier manager. He actually walked in to the electronics section one day and asked for my help finding something. I knew who he was, but treated him like anybody in a respectful manner. One of my workers ended up blaring out: "You in here to steal!?". He said "No, I'm not that same guy anymore.". I felt bad for him in the instant. I'm glad he has grown out of that destructive lifestyle. Respect to him!
