  • In the small hours of 12th April, 60163 'Tornado' became the first steam locomotive in Britain to hit the magic ton in 50 years. The ton was hit during a clandestine 90mph test run between Darlington and York with special permission to do so. The test run itself running between Doncaster and Newcastle in the dead of night.
    This video captures the run just South of Darlington on the outward run and Thirsk on the return where I must have caught it at the only place it wasn't going all out.
    Edit: Just my luck that only 5 miles down the track at Pilmoor, Tornado hit 101.6mph, and a vantage point similar to that I took of the outward shot was available.
    Further Update: I have recently found out, unaware to me at the time, that due to new track being laid in the Thirsk area, a 50mph TSR restricted a fast run through Thirsk. This video shows the acceleration into the runs last attempt at 100mph
    Please note this video was uploaded when publishing as The RailwayLad.

    Today is a glorious day for Steam traction everywhere. A round of applause for the crew of Tornado for achieving this amazing accomplishment.

    the moment history was made. Tornado is approaching her own legendary feet and on a similar level to Flying Scotsman.

      but she will come close to almost replicating it for something about her gives a very scotsman feel to it in a good way. Not many engines will have the status scotsman has but I do think that Tornado will be the only one that can come the closest to doing so.

    Making my eyes water. It's like a Merlin-engined plane or an Austin-Healey 3000. Proud to be from Doncaster.

    Nice one Will, a bit of inside info to travel that far in the small hours lol. No one made this fuss when I did it on a 'Jubilee' (45622 'Nyasaland') in August 64 although we must have finished her off as withdrawn the next month!! Cheers, Brian.

      Thanks Brian! No inside info, simply a lot of suspicion of it happening and many a discussion with a friend to try and figure it out. Times were found on Saturday and from there I planned. Shame it didn't pay off how I'd have liked but at least I made the effort at night. Cheers, Will

      Even better then Will, well thought out & executed plan. You could not really anticipate with any accuracy the 'ton up' spot but yes indeed, you made the effort & have some unique footage (Which I've shared to a FB Railway Group too), Brian.

      Rough to say the least Stephen, we should probably never have even attempted it with a loco in such a rundown state but the circumstances for it were right and it was a case of what the hell, lets do it!! lol. If you're on Facebook the story is featured on a page I've created of those good old days and can be read here facebook.com/footplatememories/posts/540091589472854 Cheers, Brian.

      ACETrainsUK And all preserved Pacific's, plus any loco capable of doing so...Scots,Jubilees,Bullieds,Lizzy,Duchess,Flying Scotsman....and preserved main line diesels. They will have to to fit in with today's faster railway system hence Tornado being used as the pioneer. The rest will now follow according to a top manage I know at Network Rail.

      Was great to watch, just a shame I didn't catch the highest high. Certainly would be great to see more big engines do what they're capable of and built to do. Thanks for watching - Will

    • @AuthenticAspects
      @AuthenticAspects  7 лет назад +5

      Unfortunately no. I hadn't anticipated her going 90 on the outward journey given the timings set, instead I went for a location where she would be going fastest. I would like to assume high 70's though. The return was very unfortunate given it hit the three figures just 5 miles south of the location. Still good to see it romping away in the small hours. Cheers - Will

    It's my understanding that Tornado has an open invitation from Deutsche Bahn to go as fast as it can/anyone would dare drive it. It would be a beautiful thing to see two old rivals for the speed record come together and set a new one, British loco on German rails :)

    not criticising because this is a purely incredible achievement but there was a 67 assisting from the rear and if I am not mistaken that was running and assisting or was it there for providing power to the carridges

    • @AuthenticAspects
      @AuthenticAspects  7 лет назад +2

      A generator car was on the back to supply such things as train heating for those onboard. The 67 was taken one way only from Doncaster to Newcastle to assist with shunting around the triangle at Newcastle. It was purely idle on the Northbound run and followed the run home on the return. I wouldn't take this comment as a criticism- thanks for watching. Cheers - Will

      The 67 is also there in case of technical difficulties, just gives a back up as otherwise it might be a bit difficult to clear the line.

    • @stephenallmond67
      @stephenallmond67 4 года назад

      The 67 was used to the up run from Doncaster to Newcastle and that run up they were targeting to hit 90 which she did then the return leg back from Newcastle to York she went on her own and had 3 windows to attempt to hit the ton unfortunately the first window she almost made it but had to slow for Darlington which also ruined the 2nd window as she was signaled through the Darlington station instead of the through line but thankfully she hit it in the 3rd window

    • @AuthenticAspects

      To turn the stock at Newcastle. The Diesel was taken off and followed the run back to Doncaster. It played no other part in the run

    actually unless your on the train....100mph don't look that fast.....it's like aircraft....take off spèed is about 140knts but from the ground it don't look that fast......similarly in a car....100 isn't much faster than 70...unless you keep an eye on Speedo......you need to think ahead quicker though......I wonder what Tornado would do given a longer stretch of track and the regulator wide open.......?

      Won't happen anyway. NRM have said Mallard won't be restored, it is a one-off and as the record holder it will be conserved in its current condition, so as to preserve as much as possible of the original loco. Better to spend the money on other A4 Pacifics, and if you have enough money, perhaps make the US and Canadian museums an offer for their examples :)
