Another good video, thank you. The history of the Klong is a sad one. When groups of Lao visit Bkk, they seek to visit this klong. As schoolchildren, they sing the song in their classroom of their Lao ancestors who were forced to toil in the klongs construction.
That was the only way to get a drivers eye style view and it works, because it's same as if I was sitting with the driver. And it's a view nobody else has used which I'm surprised!! More fun that side views, I meant to mention more 80s songs....
Appreciate the kind words Bob, thank you. I was thinking of a tour related thing, myself and Global Travel mate discussed it and when things pick up something might become of our chat. Urban tours, a trip to say, 2 tourist spots but via a few urban areas that never get appreciated. I've learned a lot because most of these places I'd never been to beforehand and the process of visiting, looking around, shooting, deciding what to include and talk about can be a long process. This video is the first I've done in 5 visits to an area, but then again it is the canal!
You are bringing best videos on Bangkok, you deserve minimum one subscriber atleast. I am amazed at your research on each and every area of the city, it's stunning absolutely stunning. Keep positing and I am sure one day you will get lots and lots of viewers and subscribers.

You amaze me. You did a very good job including the history too. Many of them I didn't even know. I wish people take care of their property more. Many people don't have to pay property taxes so, they don't care to rent it out. If they have empty building or houses they like to make up some scary story to make people afraid to get inside. For example, if you have kid your should not play hide and seek at night because glost will kidnap you something like that.
Really enjoy watching your videos. I grew up in Bangkok, although I only lived there until I was 12, I find it very interesting and keen to know more about this amazing city. Thank you Charles, I'm quite particular about which music I put in and I've settled on a few tracks I like. The generic sounding ''elevator'' music doesn't do these videos justice so I subscribe to a decent site with a lot of better stuff. Those boats were hell in the early 2000s. You climbed in anywhere, as quick as you could. Raining, rush hour with a backpack? You're a better man than I am!
On my first day in Bangkok ever I rode on this canal and it captured my heart. No trip I make to Bangkok is complete until I take a trip on Klong San Saep. Thank you for the wonderful video's of Bangkok!
Thanks Jon, it is one of those love it or hate it things, and I used to dread it, when the boats were old, as in the video. You'd get there quicker and beat traffic, but you'd spend 10mins washing your hands and face.

Thanks for this. I've only ever been on the section between Phaya Thai and Phan Fa, so it's great to see the rest. For years I used to stay near MBK and after a while the penny dropped that if I wanted to go to the old city, the canal boat was BY FAR the most efficient way to do it.
Hi Terry, Just imagine...in the past you risked a faceful of that water every time you rode it, and wasn't unusual to be stuck on a crowded boat next to the side with the plastic sheet broken. It was hell. Not sure about loving it though!!
Now this is an excellent deep dive into the Bangkok Khlongs where you didn’t necessarily have to actually dive into them. Just wish you and RUclips were around in the early days before they covered up the Khlongs, would have been very interesting to watch. Thanks again, Pat!

used to travel from Wat Lat Phrao on a network of canals (including San Saep) to the bridge near the Asia Hotel to get to MBK back in the early 90’s. also lived alongside San Saep in Sukhumvit area east of Asoke at one point. good old days. miss it all dearly. thanks for the memories! you’re a class act! 🤩

Great work. Used to commute from the pier at Sri Nakharin Wirot uni to Pratunam in the late 90's. An unlucky splash of canal water on a white shirt would leave a nasty stain in those days.
The canal was shockingly filthy in 2002 when I first used it and I'm quite surprised they actually have got it so clean in comparison. It used to have a distinct smell and colour as you know!
Now thats a truly great travelogue. That would make an awesome pilgrimage to do the whole thing on foot from the chao phraya to the bang pakong stopping at temples all along the way. I am inspired!
@@BangkokPat For sure I'll be back, sadly due to vaccine issues in both Thailand and my native Australia I can't see myself being there before June 2023. I currently live in a police state, Australians currently aren't allowed to leave the country and it doesn't look like that will change this side of Easter.

I think a Klong San Saeb canal trip is always a must whilst in Bangkok: The buzz of getting on and off the boats (I tried it once with luggage after arriving at Makkasan station from the airport - never again, almost washed my fruit and veg in the canal lol!); the breeze; the different views; the potential time saved (not in your case though!) Nice video pat the rural area at the end looked nice and quiet place to relax and maybe live. Wanted to stop In BKK next month after Phuket on my way up to NK but so many restrictions now hopefully they will get it under control soon. Keep the videos coming has kept me going for last 18 months.
The rural parts were fantastic, and to live would be ideal locations for the city. And quite a few posh developments of homes too. I'm up to one video a week now whereas before it was each fortnight.
The Klongs are still a mysterious way to travel for us westerners used to wheels of motion ! a different way of exploring BKK from a different perspective , as i have only done a few canal rides , yet again i'm still sitting here watching your vids about them , Thanks for another insight of Bangkok .. That canal always played some part in wherever I've lived around Bangkok over the years, used to have a distinct odour in the old days. Got a splash in the eye once and was worried for days afterwards, imagined all kinds of scenarios such as worms giving me blindness. I was ok but you never know...

You've got a good eye for interesting locations around the city, so I won't patronise you by making any suggestions! I lived in Khlong Tan a few years ago and found it very useful for getting into Pratunam and the old city. I used it a couple of times in the early 90s and seem to remember the boats being a lot smaller and the khlong a lot smellier. I hope to be back in the city soon - I've been away nearly two years and it's too long. Your videos have helped me reconnect over the last few weeks. For that I'm very grateful. Cheers!

Awesome video Pat. I'm going to try and run the length of the San Saep this week (saw your response to a recent comment and looks like it goes to Miniburi now). When I did the video, Minburi boats hadn't started but they are up and running. I took the new free electric boats in the Minburi video. It's a pleasant trip and a contrast of seeing the canal a lot cleaner and calm compared to the busy rough waters of it in the city. Krungkasem is just 5km and was a trade route, shortcut. You can go to Thevit pier on the river and start there. Boat only goes as far as Hua Lamphong but you can walk the rest like I did in the Talat Noi video. Have fun Steve!

Another great video Pat ,I Love travelling on the San Saep ,it's so interesting ,I went to visit the Airplane Graveyard (Google maps near Wat Sirboonreung ) last year ( has on old 747 you can climb inside and explore 👍👍) and I noticed the klong smell got progressively worse the further east you went 555

The San Saep is a fun ride when there's not many on the boat, I missed the airplane place, assumed it was shut actually but it's not an official place I heard....The klong smell, I used to like it about 18yrs ago because I lived near it and it reminded me I was almost home...

I made a pleasant discovery this last trip (two weeks or so ago) - the canal boats are MUCH easier to get into and out of. The last time I was in Bangkok (2020 IIRC) it was like it always was - you had to step over the gunwales and over the plastic screen (which went up and down to let people onto the boat). There was a rope you could grab onto, and you had to step on benches that people sit on which went from one side of the boat to the other. You didn't have much time to do it, too, and during rush hour , when the boats were full, it was something you worried about, especially when you were carrying bags. Now? They've set up an entry port amidships - just step onto the boat, and there are steps down to the deck. Fewer benches, but there's an aisle in the middle of the boat. SO much easier, and you don't worry about ending up in the canal.
@@BangkokPat I wonder how many people dropped stuff in the water every year getting on and off. Or worse, fell in. I guess they made good use of the COVID break to make the changes.

Hi Michael, cheers mate glad you enjoyed that! It's a crying shame about the canals, the ones that remain half covered are a magnet for garbage and anything else people wanna dump, so would have been better to either leave them open or not, but time will tell because they're now thinking that reopening a few and unblocking them would be great for flood prevention, especially after the 2011 floods in the city which could have been prevented because of that.

Thank you Mai, the canals are quite entertaining to travel on but I would go crazy if I had to use it daily, but the electric boats are well comfortable but a bit slower. Bobae market was sadly quiet, it's a madhouse normally as you'll know.
Cheers Paul, some are way past the point of no return. When I first lived in BKK they were ressurecting a lot of old structures left for dead after 1997, some didn't look to healthy but are really great looking condos now!!

You were in Klongchan Place, wow, it's doesn't look bad at all, a few units for sale too and that area will go up in the next few years with the rail lines opening. Cheap as well given the sizes of the apartments. NongChok looked lovely, and I didn't mention in the video that I even thought of following it way out into the rural areas. Then the logistics of it kicked in, not possible so a few google earth screenshots had to do....

Hi Jimmy hope you're good mate, I agree, for a day it'd be a lot of fun but having to do that daily commute must get old very fast, especially in the rush hour where it's horrendously bad. That video took about 5 days from start to finish completely which is quick for me as I'm trying to get them out weekly rather than fortnightly like before where I'd shoot a lot more and take time. Researching can be a long process, hunting down the old footage and pics but it's part of the fun.
It's the only way to get a head-on view of the canal!! Surprised that nobody else did it!! Hope everything good mate, you're taking 12 Baht trains I'm on 8 Baht boats!!
The canal boats are a real taste of the 'off the tourist track.' I used to travel from Nana Nua to Ramkamhaeng to play table tennis with friends. On the return, always excited by the thought of popping into Lolitas! The girls would commute on the boats, and when, one day, one exploded - making quite big news, i asked them if they had seen it. "Nah, we were on the previous boat!" Absolutely not phased at all by a potentially death defying ride to the 'office.'😎

Swimming in that klong almost makes me ill just watching it. Sad they had no future thought about filling the canals. Flooding is only going to get worse as Bangkok is slowly sinking. Another very enjoyable show.
We would probably get quite ill swimming in that but those local kids do it all the time. The government at the time were desperate to please car owners as you'd expect. There's improved drainage in parts of Bangkok but it'll take a big effort to sort out the whole city. Aren't we meant to be sinking?

Another great piece…the one thing I cannot find an answer on is, can private boats use the canal system for travel? I think a little RIB boat or something like it would be a delightful way to discover a different side to Bangkok, and I noticed on maps that there’s another main canal running out towards Chatauchak, so as an alternative way to get into the city it would be awesome. Any ideas?
Thank you Luke. I think with private boats on the Khlong San Saep you'd need to ask permission from the BMA but as you saw, those small motor boats are no problem. I doubt we'll ever see a barge moving along Thai canals. The canal around Chatuchak is Khlong Bang Sue, which is fairly well known, recently many locals have been evicted then rehoused in new buildings close by. It's a lot dirtier than the San Saep. There's also Khlong Phra Khanong which is very nice to walk along and from what I see there is some kind of boat service but run privately in small boats, there are piers. In my Phra Khanong video I was round that canal. Also around Chatuchak running up past Tao Poon is the Khlong Prapa.

I don’t know if you know Chicago, but the Chicago River runs through much of the downtown area and it’s such a great way to get a completely different perspective. Just thinking in a city as hot as Bangkok, being nearer to water than blacktop would be so much nicer!
@@lukerabin5079 It's closed to private traffic. The reason being it would be exceedingly dangerous to be out in something like a kayak when you have the canal boat traffic zipping along at high speed, zig-zagging between the pier stops. And if you were at fault in an accident with a canal boat you would need some pretty hefty insurance.
Hi Pat, my hotel way back in 2005 was The Bangkok City Suite at Soi 1 Phetchburi road, I will walk from here till Soi 7, then take the BTS from Ratchathewi. I moved to The Evergreen Place near Asia Hotel later, you can walk to the Muslim area behind The Jim Thompson House. Push forward now in 2023, its back to Ramkamhaeng, Mahathai Pier then The Mall Bangkapi pier. Its not clean but its a cheap mode for commuters to Pratunam. I am waiting for the Red Line to Min Buri. Will be back next week, will walk from Ramkamhaeng 53 till Mahat Thai.
So you know the Ratchathewi are well, l did a video last year, a lot to see in quite a small area. Bangkapi l know well too, two new MRT lines will soon make it very convenient to get to, maybe a few changes will happen, all those new condos going up, it'll still be a bit rough around the edges though!
Only too well. I had to explore the area in and around Ratchathewi BTS as I did not speak even simple Thai thus I walked and walked. There is a beautiful SCB bank building just at Phetchburi Soi 3. Its an old building but still used I gather as I need to stop at Soi 7 then walk in the opposite way to reach it. I also am a SCB account holder since 2005, it was easy to open an account although I am not working here. Such great memories. Bangkok in reality has many local secrets that the tour guides just purposely ignore..

I've Visited Venice compared to the klong s of Bangkok there really is no comparison between the two, Bangkok has a massive River and Klong network that alleviates flooding provides transport and is a major part of Bangkok's logistical infrastructure. Another interesting Video.Ps I would rather be in Bangkok than Venice any day of the Week.
Thanks Louis, venice charges money to enter the city now by the way, just read that. The city is now flooding worse than Bangkok and the people are weary of tourists. I'd rather be in Bangkok too, Like you say, most Khlongs now are for helping drain water from the river during high tides in rainy season.
Pat, would you have any stats on how many people fall off those boats daily. I often wonder. In the West, we are are so focused on safety, we have buses that lower their steps to level up with the pavements. But in Bangkok commuters board and alight the boats with such a matter of fact about it.
Klong San Sahp starts way out past Minburi - probably in Petchaburi province - and it seems to has the same name all the way along. "Khlong Saen Saep is a canal in central Thailand, connecting the Chao Phraya River to Prachinburi Province and Chachoengsao." WIKI
I see you use the 'flying backwards' to keep the spray away from the camera, rather like the Red Arrows did on their around Britain flight many years ago. Love riding the canal buses, but I wouldn't drink the water, nor would I do so in Venice.

A different slant on a transport vid..... I saw at the beginning the Asia Hotel at Ratchathewi, i have stayed there once but only for a night. That was when i paid a visit to the Jesada Technik Museum at Nakhon Chasri. Did you know they have 3 ex London Transport Routemaster buses there? Plus rather a lot of other buses, cars and bikes. Maybe worth making an upload about the place?.... I mean, they even have a De Lorean.... i checked carefully but it didn't have a Flux Capaciter..... maybe the factory forget to fit it to their one.......
Thanks! That museum says temporarily closed, sadly. I would definitely do a video on that place. I was aware there were a couple of routmasters here as I've seen a Thai tv show riding one. A friend wanted to import one to make a restaurant out of one, wasn't as expensive as I first thought to pick one up.

I heard a rummour that a ship of fools was sailing on the seven seas then it took a detour somewhere down that crazy river but it got stuck in the middle on loose rocks. The coastguard told them not to rock the boat and to relax, as the indigineous local people were going to help. Two tribes appeared and despite them being rivals, they said ''let's work together' and set them free. I could go on and on.....

Another good video, thank you. The history of the Klong is a sad one. When groups of Lao visit Bkk, they seek to visit this klong. As schoolchildren, they sing the song in their classroom of their Lao ancestors who were forced to toil in the klongs construction.

Appreciate the kind words Bob, thank you. I was thinking of a tour related thing, myself and Global Travel mate discussed it and when things pick up something might become of our chat. Urban tours, a trip to say, 2 tourist spots but via a few urban areas that never get appreciated. I've learned a lot because most of these places I'd never been to beforehand and the process of visiting, looking around, shooting, deciding what to include and talk about can be a long process. This video is the first I've done in 5 visits to an area, but then again it is the canal!
You are bringing best videos on Bangkok, you deserve minimum one subscriber atleast. I am amazed at your research on each and every area of the city, it's stunning absolutely stunning. Keep positing and I am sure one day you will get lots and lots of viewers and subscribers.

You amaze me. You did a very good job including the history too. Many of them I didn't even know. I wish people take care of their property more. Many people don't have to pay property taxes so, they don't care to rent it out. If they have empty building or houses they like to make up some scary story to make people afraid to get inside. For example, if you have kid your should not play hide and seek at night because glost will kidnap you something like that.
I'm never 100% sure about ghost stories I get told but I wanna believe them because I love those ghost stories!
Really enjoy watching your videos. I grew up in Bangkok, although I only lived there until I was 12, I find it very interesting and keen to know more about this amazing city. And I've recommended your channel to my mum who is from Bangkok and has lived there from 1955-1999 before moving to the UK.

The generic sounding ''elevator'' music doesn't do these videos justice so I subscribe to a decent site with a lot of better stuff. Those boats were hell in the early 2000s. You climbed in anywhere, as quick as you could. Raining, rush hour with a backpack? You're a better man than I am!

Thanks Jon, it is one of those love it or hate it things, and I used to dread it, when the boats were old, as in the video. You'd get there quicker and beat traffic, but you'd spend 10mins washing your hands and face.

Thanks for this. I've only ever been on the section between Phaya Thai and Phan Fa, so it's great to see the rest. For years I used to stay near MBK and after a while the penny dropped that if I wanted to go to the old city, the canal boat was BY FAR the most efficient way to do it.
As of last week it actually goes further, out to Minburi where I was walking along and said it was so calm. Electric boats now run along that section.

Hi Terry, Just imagine...in the past you risked a faceful of that water every time you rode it, and wasn't unusual to be stuck on a crowded boat next to the side with the plastic sheet broken. It was hell. Not sure about loving it though!!

used to travel from Wat Lat Phrao on a network of canals (including San Saep) to the bridge near the Asia Hotel to get to MBK back in the early 90’s. also lived alongside San Saep in Sukhumvit area east of Asoke at one point. good old days. miss it all dearly. thanks for the memories! you’re a class act! 🤩

Great work. Used to commute from the pier at Sri Nakharin Wirot uni to Pratunam in the late 90's. An unlucky splash of canal water on a white shirt would leave a nasty stain in those days.
The canal was shockingly filthy in 2002 when I first used it and I'm quite surprised they actually have got it so clean in comparison. It used to have a distinct smell and colour as you know!

Now thats a truly great travelogue. That would make an awesome pilgrimage to do the whole thing on foot from the chao phraya to the bang pakong stopping at temples all along the way. I am inspired!

I think a Klong San Saeb canal trip is always a must whilst in Bangkok: The buzz of getting on and off the boats (I tried it once with luggage after arriving at Makkasan station from the airport - never again, almost washed my fruit and veg in the canal lol!); the breeze; the different views; the potential time saved (not in your case though!) Plus it seems to have a healthy future, which sounds great. Thanks a lot, mate

That canal always played some part in wherever I've lived around Bangkok over the years, used to have a distinct odour in the old days. Got a splash in the eye once and was worried for days afterwards, imagined all kinds of scenarios such as worms giving me blindness. I was ok but you never know...

I lived in Khlong Tan a few years ago and found it very useful for getting into Pratunam and the old city. I used it a couple of times in the early 90s and seem to remember the boats being a lot smaller and the khlong a lot smellier.
I hope to be back in the city soon - I've been away nearly two years and it's too long. Your videos have helped me reconnect over the last few weeks. For that I'm very grateful.

Awesome video Pat. I'm going to try and run the length of the San Saep this week (saw your response to a recent comment and looks like it goes to Miniburi now). I also plan on the shorter, quieter Krungkasem at some point. Thanks for the inspiration. I've been laid up under the weather for a bit so have been catching up on the videos I missed. Great stuff.
When I did the video, Minburi boats hadn't started but they are up and running. I took the new free electric boats in the Minburi video. It's a pleasant trip and a contrast of seeing the canal a lot cleaner and calm compared to the busy rough waters of it in the city. Krungkasem is just 5km and was a trade route, shortcut. You can go to Thevit pier on the river and start there. Boat only goes as far as Hua Lamphong but you can walk the rest like I did in the Talat Noi video. Have fun Steve!

Another great video Pat ,I Love travelling on the San Saep ,it's so interesting ,I went to visit the Airplane Graveyard (Google maps near Wat Sirboonreung ) last year ( has on old 747 you can climb inside and explore 👍👍) and I noticed the klong smell got progressively worse the further east you went 555

The San Saep is a fun ride when there's not many on the boat, I missed the airplane place, assumed it was shut actually but it's not an official place I heard....The klong smell, I used to like it about 18yrs ago because I lived near it and it reminded me I was almost home...

I made a pleasant discovery this last trip (two weeks or so ago) - the canal boats are MUCH easier to get into and out of. The last time I was in Bangkok (2020 IIRC) it was like it always was - you had to step over the gunwales and over the plastic screen (which went up and down to let people onto the boat). There was a rope you could grab onto, and you had to step on benches that people sit on which went from one side of the boat to the other. You didn't have much time to do it, too, and during rush hour , when the boats were full, it was something you worried about, especially when you were carrying bags. Now? They've set up an entry port amidships - just step onto the boat, and there are steps down to the deck. Fewer benches, but there's an aisle in the middle of the boat. SO much easier, and you don't worry about ending up in the canal.
They changed the boats for the better, l remember those old days, it was hell in rush hour in rainy season
@@BangkokPat I wonder how many people dropped stuff in the water every year getting on and off. Or worse, fell in. I guess they made good use of the COVID break to make the changes.

It's a crying shame about the canals, the ones that remain half covered are a magnet for garbage and anything else people wanna dump, so would have been better to either leave them open or not, but time will tell because they're now thinking that reopening a few and unblocking them would be great for flood prevention, especially after the 2011 floods in the city which could have been prevented because of that.

Cracking stuff as usual Pat ,this has got to be one of my favourite channels now very well put together .I sometimes get the MRT to Hua Lamphong train station walk up the canal to Bobae market have a mooch then canal boat to Bang kapi have a bit explore the back on the boat to Nana nuea Good day out . Thank you Mai, the canals are quite entertaining to travel on but I would go crazy if I had to use it daily, but the electric boats are well comfortable but a bit slower. Bobae market was sadly quiet, it's a madhouse normally as you'll know.

Cheers Paul, some are way past the point of no return. When I first lived in BKK they were ressurecting a lot of old structures left for dead after 1997, some didn't look to healthy but are really great looking condos now!!

You were in Klongchan Place, wow, it's doesn't look bad at all, a few units for sale too and that area will go up in the next few years with the rail lines opening. Cheap as well given the sizes of the apartments. NongChok looked lovely, and I didn't mention in the video that I even thought of following it way out into the rural areas. Then the logistics of it kicked in, not possible so a few google earth screenshots had to do....

Hi Jimmy hope you're good mate, I agree, for a day it'd be a lot of fun but having to do that daily commute must get old very fast, especially in the rush hour where it's horrendously bad.
That video took about 5 days from start to finish completely which is quick for me as I'm trying to get them out weekly rather than fortnightly like before where I'd shoot a lot more and take time. Researching can be a long process, hunting down the old footage and pics but it's part of the fun.

The canal boats are a real taste of the 'off the tourist track.' I used to travel from Nana Nua to Ramkamhaeng to play table tennis with friends. On the return, always excited by the thought of popping into Lolitas! The girls would commute on the boats, and when, one day, one exploded - making quite big news, i asked them if they had seen it. "Nah, we were on the previous boat!" Absolutely not phased at all by a potentially death defying ride to the 'office.'😎

Swimming in that klong almost makes me ill just watching it. Sad they had no future thought about filling the canals. Flooding is only going to get worse as Bangkok is slowly sinking. Another very enjoyable show.
We would probably get quite ill swimming in that but those local kids do it all the time. The government at the time were desperate to please car owners as you'd expect. There's improved drainage in parts of Bangkok but it'll take a big effort to sort out the whole city. Aren't we meant to be sinking?

Another great piece…the one thing I cannot find an answer on is, can private boats use the canal system for travel? I think a little RIB boat or something like it would be a delightful way to discover a different side to Bangkok, and I noticed on maps that there’s another main canal running out towards Chatauchak, so as an alternative way to get into the city it would be awesome. Any ideas?
Thank you Luke. I think with private boats on the Khlong San Saep you'd need to ask permission from the BMA but as you saw, those small motor boats are no problem. I doubt we'll ever see a barge moving along Thai canals.
The canal around Chatuchak is Khlong Bang Sue, which is fairly well known, recently many locals have been evicted then rehoused in new buildings close by. It's a lot dirtier than the San Saep. There's also Khlong Phra Khanong which is very nice to walk along and from what I see there is some kind of boat service but run privately in small boats, there are piers. In my Phra Khanong video I was round that canal.
Also around Chatuchak running up past Tao Poon is the Khlong Prapa.
@@BangkokPat thanks Pat! That’s awesome. Even if it’s just a kayak, I’m really drawn to the idea of exploring the bigger khlong. I don’t know if you know Chicago, but the Chicago River runs through much of the downtown area and it’s such a great way to get a completely different perspective. Just thinking in a city as hot as Bangkok, being nearer to water than blacktop would be so much nicer!
@@lukerabin5079 It's closed to private traffic. The reason being it would be exceedingly dangerous to be out in something like a kayak when you have the canal boat traffic zipping along at high speed, zig-zagging between the pier stops. And if you were at fault in an accident with a canal boat you would need some pretty hefty insurance.

Hi Pat, my hotel way back in 2005 was The Bangkok City Suite at Soi 1 Phetchburi road, I will walk from here till Soi 7, then take the BTS from Ratchathewi. I moved to The Evergreen Place near Asia Hotel later, you can walk to the Muslim area behind The Jim Thompson House. Push forward now in 2023, its back to Ramkamhaeng, Mahathai Pier then The Mall Bangkapi pier. Its not clean but its a cheap mode for commuters to Pratunam. I am waiting for the Red Line to Min Buri. Will be back next week, will walk from Ramkamhaeng 53 till Mahat Thai.
So you know the Ratchathewi are well, l did a video last year, a lot to see in quite a small area. Bangkapi l know well too, two new MRT lines will soon make it very convenient to get to, maybe a few changes will happen, all those new condos going up, it'll still be a bit rough around the edges though!
Only too well. I had to explore the area in and around Ratchathewi BTS as I did not speak even simple Thai thus I walked and walked. There is a beautiful SCB bank building just at Phetchburi Soi 3. Its an old building but still used I gather as I need to stop at Soi 7 then walk in the opposite way to reach it. I also am a SCB account holder since 2005, it was easy to open an account although I am not working here. Such great memories. Bangkok in reality has many local secrets that the tour guides just purposely ignore..
Excellent vid. Back in January I saw dead rats, cats, dogs and a dead water monitor in there. Certainly not a place I'd consider washing my feet in, let alone swimming in...555

I've Visited Venice compared to the klong s of Bangkok there really is no comparison between the two, Bangkok has a massive River and Klong network that alleviates flooding provides transport and is a major part of Bangkok's logistical infrastructure. Another interesting Video.Ps I would rather be in Bangkok than Venice any day of the Week.
Thanks Louis, venice charges money to enter the city now by the way, just read that. The city is now flooding worse than Bangkok and the people are weary of tourists. I'd rather be in Bangkok too,
Like you say, most Khlongs now are for helping drain water from the river during high tides in rainy season.

Pat, would you have any stats on how many people fall off those boats daily. I often wonder. In the West, we are are so focused on safety, we have buses that lower their steps to level up with the pavements. But in Bangkok commuters board and alight the boats with such a matter of fact about it.
Klong San Sahp starts way out past Minburi - probably in Petchaburi province - and it seems to has the same name all the way along. "Khlong Saen Saep is a canal in central Thailand, connecting the Chao Phraya River to Prachinburi Province and Chachoengsao." WIKI
I traced it all the way to Bang Pakong River in Chachongsao, even considered a visit but too far and miles from the city.
I see you use the 'flying backwards' to keep the spray away from the camera, rather like the Red Arrows did on their around Britain flight many years ago. Love riding the canal buses, but I wouldn't drink the water, nor would I do so in Venice.

They will use the big old slow boats on the Bangkapi-Minburi route. You know, boats are usually way slow compared to mini-vans.
Thats what I thought, no way they could run through boats from Pratunam all the way to Minburi.
A different slant on a transport vid..... I saw at the beginning the Asia Hotel at Ratchathewi, i have stayed there once but only for a night. That was when i paid a visit to the Jesada Technik Museum at Nakhon Chasri. Did you know they have 3 ex London Transport Routemaster buses there? Plus rather a lot of other buses, cars and bikes. Maybe worth making an upload about the place?.... I mean, they even have a De Lorean.... i checked carefully but it didn't have a Flux Capaciter..... maybe the factory forget to fit it to their one.......
Thanks! That museum says temporarily closed, sadly. I would definitely do a video on that place. I was aware there were a couple of routmasters here as I've seen a Thai tv show riding one. A friend wanted to import one to make a restaurant out of one, wasn't as expensive as I first thought to pick one up.
