      I just got one and I must say it´s fucking amazing. It´s my main Riff maker right now, I´m more about rythm playing and it just fits my style perfectly, I used to play a strat but this one feels way nicer to stand up and play random shit haha.

    Cory, your reviews are top notch. Playing and recording quality are sweet. Very nice! These are 2 of Harley Benton's nicest guitars, in my opinion. Being able to hear such a clear difference is of great value in forming opinions. I would recommend both for quality/beauty and value. Surprisingly true that Harley Benton's rock!

    Well i bought the sc custom in flat black and hold hardware i put a 59 dimarzio in the neck and superdistortion in the bridge. I love it. I ordered a hb35 deluxe but cancelled the order after i saw the SC-550 faded dessert flame it is so beautiful i can't believe it so i'm waiting patiently for 7 -8 weeks

  • @johncartelli

    what i like about my sc custom is that the back is contoured like a strat so its more comfortable to play than the 550 or a Gibson...I'm going to have the pickups potted ..as the squeal a lot in front of the amp at higher volumes..but other than that i love it..the bridge pickup is one of my favorite..but the neck is a bit muddy so i put in an irontech rolling mills pickup.they sound great and are under $35, also first thing to upgrade is the white metal screw on the strap locks...get a 6mm x 1.0 12 mm long steel screw with a washer . setting the guitar down on the straplock will crack the cheap cast screw

      The 450 & 550 are for traditionalists with monster hands and broad shoulders. The SC Custom will be a superior fit and thus play better for many. Much slimmer neck profile, narrower nut, shorter scale, lighter body. And the new (6/2018) Vietnamese production are now provided with split coil & Roswells.
      Looks are always subjective. The Custom's styling and paint is wow! This vid really doesn't do that Honey Flame justice. It looks *much* better in the flesh. Here the colours appear too highly contrasted, and intense a hue.
      Excellent review. Awesome piece of kit for the $$$.

    As I understand it you can split coils on The Humbuckers on both Models

    • @TheBsavage
      @TheBsavage 4 года назад

      You can definitely split the bridge pickup. Didn't try the neck, but would assume its the same. There actually pretty nice sounding P/Us as humbuckers, so I don't know why one would want to split. Single-coil are just too noisy. If I want single-coil, i use my American Deluxe Stratocaster. I know that isn't really fair, since that guitar is around $1500, so if you've only got one guitar, or your budget is small, this HB is awfully good.

  • @alessandrogiangio4837
    @alessandrogiangio4837 8 лет назад

    Good morning Cory. Hope this message finds You well. I have just received my HB SC-Custom Honey Flame. A great guitar, really. Thanx a lot for Your preciuos suggestions. I have noted one particular aspect that You pointed out in this video. Strange to say the natural woods versions of the SC-Custom model (says Honey and Lemon flames) weight 650-750 grams more than the painted ones (Black and White). I say this because I also own an SC-Custom Black with P90s. I think that this could be due to the painting job, so mahogany can not be use so I really think that the body of the white and black version is made with other type of wood. Do not know which one but the guitar sounds very good so I do not care too much about. What do you think about?

    • @CoryMura
      @CoryMura  8 лет назад +2

      Alessandro Giangio yeah, could be that the honey and lemon ones got maple tops while the black and white ones got no maple top. Will have to take out a pickup on both guitars and scrape away some lacquer to check if im right.
      I always thought the black one sound a little beefier but thought it was just an illusion... Because of the more metal look or something.

    • @alessandrogiangio4837
      @alessandrogiangio4837 8 лет назад +1

      Yes Cory, exactly, I have had the same perspection. But anyway are great, unbelievable guitars for the money and more. I am very happy. To tell you the truth I own also the SC-550 paradise flòame and all three LP style HB have different sound and tone features so I have all I need. May be I should add also the SC-550 Tobacco Flame that have another different pickups just to add more sound and tones. As a matter of facts, they cost very few money. With a cost of an Epiphone you can buy 3-4 HB and they sound equally good... Best to You and thanx a lot for Your fast replay. I have really appreciated

  • @AstralToneworx
    @AstralToneworx 6 лет назад

    I am debating between SC-450plus and Custom. My biggest issue is trying to find out what kind of pickups benton guitars come with. It seems that the pickups change even within one line with different colours. I have seen some videos where Customs have come with Roswell pickups and in some cases, with Wilkinsons. The other problem is Wilkinson MWCHB seems to be Ceramic (I am guessing the C is for Ceramic). However, their site states MWCHB alnicos which is odd. Also their is no data on their site on the DC resistance of these pickups.

    • @CoryMura
      @CoryMura  6 лет назад +1

      they all come now with roswells. no more wilkinsons on any HB

    • @AstralToneworx
      @AstralToneworx 6 лет назад

      Right. I had asked their support a few times before ordering and was told it will be Wilkinson pickups as mentioned on the site. After ordering 2 guitars, found out they will be shipping with Roswells only. Apparently, Thomann has not been sending Wilkinsons for an year now. Very disappointing customer support so far. Guess, you can't get any better at this price point.

      @theblytonian3906 6 лет назад

      Weren't you paying attention? It isn't needed. The neck and body are both thinner on the custom effectively reducing the hand span around that section so that upper fret access isn't obstructed.

    • @johncartelli
      @johncartelli 6 лет назад

      even it being thinner, an upper region cutaway would make it easier..i know i have an sc custom

    • @theblytonian3906
      @theblytonian3906 6 лет назад

      @johncartelli Me too. Yes, it would, but pragmatically it's unnecessary on the thinner neck and body of the custom where weakening that section on the already less substantial neck is a recipe for grief on a set- neck. My bolt-on contemporary necked Strats and Teles have heels at the cutaways no less obstructive than the SC Custom. I don't have size L hands and upper fret access doesn't present as an issue on any of them. Cory makes this same point re access to the upper frets via the cutaway on the SC Custom in the vid. They could arguably aesthetically and ergonomically taper that body wood away from the base of the butt joint, but personally I wouldn't like it cut down to the same section as it is on the 550. Appreciate your opinion may differ. Things as they are, I chose the SC Custom and would again.

    The sc550 has a more complex, warmer tone with more _air_ in it - all in a good way. That said I have an SC-Custom and like it. One day I may add an SC-550 but then the dilemma is this one or the one with the open humbuckers.

    Nice video Cory. I need some suggestion. I love to play Hard rock and Blues rock. I'm in dilemma to buy SC custom vs SC 550 vs CST 24T. Can you give me some insights, which one would be better to my taste as the sounding perspective?

      Well I'm not Cory, but here's my two cents if you want:
      SC 550 is the most bluesy of them all thanks to those Vintage pickups and a big chunk of Mahogany behind them
      SC Custom is the nice middle ground with very versatile Wilkinson MWCHB's - also, Grover tuners!
      CST-24 is the most aggresive of them (I know it kinda doesn't look like it), thanks to the snappy and responsive WHHB's - fast and heavy
      I'd personally go with the SC Custom for versatility and overall great sound.
      But if you happen to pick the CST-24 I would suggest getting the fixed bridge one instead of the CST-24T with a Tremolo, which will only give you problems and frustrations. Also Tremolos are cool for doing some dive bombs the first 30minutes you play them, later on you tend to not use them at all in fear of the guitar getting out of tune. Spare yourself the nerves and - unless it's a genuine well set up Floyd Rose that will cost more that this guitar itself - pass on the tremolo.
      Cheers!

      Thank you a lot for your advice. Probably i will not go for CST. I have admiration and fascination towards Les Paul shape, so i will go for one of them. As per tremolo concern, you are right. For tremolo, a genuine floyd rose version is always better. Thanks mate for taking some time to give some good insights. Cheers!

      +k0mp0cik i agree on everything except for the tremolo. aleays get the tremolo version. even if you dont use it..leave it plain on the body.. its not routed to be able to sink into the body... so ITS a hardtail if you want it too. but it will give you more options to get a perfect intonation and string action.
      the fixed bridge tend to give you sitar noises on the b and g string.

      In that case, you're absolutely correct - Tremolo should be superior as long as you don't rock it back and forth too much.
      Cheers!

    Got one. Electronics are wonky right out of the box. No quality control at all. It's BEAUTIFUL though. I almost don't want to get a warranty replacement because it looks so good I was considering just hanging on my wall as "art" & calling it a day.

      Maybe you should be a Fine Art reviewer! Wonky........good!

      @@LM-kg9wf Maybe I should be one. I hadn't considered that. I don't have any training, & I think the pay is pretty lousy, I have no experience, but it *could* work. I'll should just do a review video, but I want to spend more time with it first. I find new good, & bad things the more I use it. I think a decent non-fan-boy review after using it a bit could be useful to others. I just restrung it with nines, so there's everything that goes with that (changing gauges, brands, setup, etc). Cheers! Keep rocking!

    Why can't we just have a SC-Custom with the better neck joint?

    • @theblytonian3906
      @theblytonian3906 6 лет назад

      @Josua Stangl Perhaps because there's nothing wrong with its neck joint affecting playability as is? Custom has volute, thinner neck section, lighter thinner body, narrower & graphite nut. Feels great in the hand.

      Still deciding between those 2, I like the tabacco burst finish, neckjoint and full arched top of the sc-550 and the belly cut and volute of the custom
      ...probably gonna replace tuners and pickups almost instantly

      Each to their own. Choice for me was a no brainer. Here's my perspective, and why I acted on it.
      The tuners on the SC-Custom are Grovers. Functionally, they don't *need* replacing, and I prefer how they look. They hold tune just fine. The mechs are smooth and geared ratios good. The fixing wood screw alignment issue is minuscule. You won't even notice it viewed from the front of the headstock. I have a 2018 Yamaha APX600 that's hardly any better in that regard, and arguably not quite as well finished -just. That's how good the new Vietnamese SC-Custom production finish is. I had an SG many many years ago with those horrible plastic looking Gibson thumb grip knob thingys. Why anyone would willingly prefer them? Ugh.
      Pups are very much a personal choice. My initial impressions of the currently fitted Roswells is that they are OK, not great, but inarguably impressive for the money. So I could go with swapping out for the expense of SDs or DMs there if it's in the budget. The build quality certainly supports that expenditure if that's whats wanted. I wouldn't for my needs. OTOH, I customised a project Tele I bought with Wilkinson tuners, Wilkinson alnico Pups and a replacement contemporary style six saddle top loading bridge, but that was because its fitted tuner mechs were rubbish, the Pups were budget ceramics whose tone could be summarised as 'they played, they made a noise', and I prefer more precise intonation over tradition.
      As for 550 vs SC-Custom. Inarguably, they both *look* great. But the SC-Custom is a modern instrument with all the refinements which go with that. The 550 is more traditional, with all the encumbrances that accompany that. From my perspective the choice comes down to whether you intend to play it and like playing it, or whether you want to hang it on the wall, look at it, and romanticise occasionally.
      Additional to the important playability enhancement features previously mentioned, the SC-Custom has a tummy comfort cutaway on the underside upper body which I forgot to mention. I suppose they didn't do the upper cutaway you find on modern custom Strats and Teles bcause it'd be just a mod too far in spoiling the drop dead look provided by the natural lines of the custom LP facia's curvature. And really, set neck notwithstanding, in 2018 with all kinds of Pup configs available fitted to the bodies, the LP body shape is really about the tradition and the look isn't it? Because they're heavy as phuck compared to a modern cut Strat or Tele style body.
      Now If I was buying for looks, preferred colour notwithstanding there's little between them. I bought for playability, and I'm not bound by romanticism so I bought the SC-Custom for its playability. Like their bikes and cars, the Asians got it their remodelling right. Mr. Average (Caucasian) Man in any first world country isn't a 6 2" (188cm) ectomorph with gorilla sized hands shaped like spider fingers. Stats reveal he's a 175cm aka 5 '9" in the old money, slightly taller at 190cm/5'10" in the US, the majority likely ecto or endo with proportionally sized hands and digits. No-one *normal* truly likes a neck that feels like you're trying to wrap your around a block of 4x2. Times have moved on since 1955.
