I think lisbon is wonderful of course. So full of beautiful colours, buildings, history, good food, et cetera. I don't find people to be as nice as in the north of portugal. I actually think they're cold. As a portuguese I do love lisbon, but if I were to live there, I wouldn't be happy. Too much traffic, too many people. It triggers my anxiety. Just for a short visit. For living... always our beautiful island madeira. I say our, because it's as much yours as it is mine! It's so nice to see how strongly you feel about portugal. May you be forever happy in this country/island, for as long as you choose to make them your home!

Thanks for your wonderful comment, Mel! Lisbon is still magical, but it definitely is changing a lot. Our worries is that it becomes too polished without its quirkiness. If you take cities like London, Paris, Copenhagen, Barcelona etc they have become too polished and perfect to the point of declining. There is nothing left to come for because everything has been streamlined by huge corporations. In other words, there is no soul left, which is saddening. There's no way around it though. Eventually Lisbon will face a decline once has visited the city to the point of fatigue. Anyway, let's hope for the best :)
New arrivals pricing locals out is not progress. How is that progress? How would you feel if you were priced out by thousands of people with more money than you coming from somewhere else? The Portuguese Government are finally stopping Golden visa's due to the devastating effect on locals.
One more thing: I saw more Brazilians than Portuguese in Lisbon (for better or worse) . In fact one way you can know if they’re Brazilian other than physiognomy is that Brazilians speak little English while the Portuguese generally speak great English.
What is happening, Portugal has become fashionable in Brazil, a very high number of tourists, as well as emigrants from Brazil. Easily found in the areas of services (restaurants, bars and others), you will find many workers from Brazil and Asia.
I guess the main reason why Lisbon has become Europe's most wanted city is social media. Since everyone is posting their meals, nice spots etc. cities like Lisbon became more and more known all over the world. It's nice that people can enjoy this beautiful city but the side effects aren't great. A few years ago it was affordable to live there for most people, but now it's just for the rich.
You may be right, but I don't think it's a bad thing, as it helps the city center to be revamped and refurbished, made beautiful... And, that was always the case at the center of cities like Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Vienna, well almost all major cities in Europe really.. where up to the middle class people get smaller appartments if they wanna live in nice areas in the city center, or go into the suburbs but get bigger houses, cheaper prices and often live in more recent or completely new buildings.. Thing is that the lower classes of society in Lisbon used to live in the center (gave it charisma sure, and even the birth of Fado and etc.. but the city also looked degraded, poor), whereas the rich used to live in Cascais and other places with a sea view west from the city.. Now it's all changing, now the center is where the rich prefer to live, and the rest actually prefers to be out of the city in modern buildings in places like Oeiras, Odivelas, SIntra, Amadora, Loures, or the south bank of the river... 😉 Of course big investments in new transport systems must be developed and quick, because otherwise the money people save in a home in the suburbs, will be spend in using a car, parking fees and lose hours of life a day in traffic or commuting by transports, (if you're lucky to have a train line close to you it's easier of course) 😂
No friend... No portuguese live in Lisbon anymore (upper or "lower" class, as you said). The foreign real estate speculation, the digital nomads, and short rentals push all locals away....

Love the street style interviews blended with your signature style. Makes me feel nostalgic for a city I've not visited. Would be amazing to see a similar type of video for Madeira as well. Its great seeing perspectives of tourists and locals. Amazing content ❤
As American travelers - and certifiable commenters - we have our Pros and Cons comparing each place mentioned in your video: Madeira, Canary Islands, and Lisbon. 🏝️ Canary Islands (specifically Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) has perfect weather year round and beautiful, sprawling sandy beaches, but the restaurants cater to British tourists so sadly no flavor (or flavour, lol), and the seafront architecture is Eastern Bloc style so such an ugly eyesore amidst an otherwise beautiful landscape. Rarely rains and summer boasts “la panza de burro,” so a nice fluffy gray cloud hangs in the sky during the hottest part of the day, keeping Las Palmas the perfect temperature. 🏞️ Madeira is second best in weather with stunning scenery, ample hiking, charming towns, and *amazing* food + Poncha, but no sandy beaches and Funchal has a HUGE problem with incessant barking dogs. Also... roosters, terribly-placed power lines, and loud stinky busses can really kill the vibe, but we are still madly in love with everything else Madeira has to offer! 🏰 Lisbon is overflowing with so much history, colorful streets, beautiful castles, and arguably the best pastries, but the cost of everything has gone up SO much over the past few years that it’s almost as expensive as America, although the quality of life, food + ingredients is far superior to that in the States. And Portuguese wine is undoubtedly the best we have ever had anywhere in the world! Aaaaand, as always, another great video you guys :)
@@velourialamour Still, you can stay outside Funchal and then pop in Funchal anytime. Madeira is not only Funchal. There is a lot to see around the island.
@@ruinunes8251 this is very true, but we have explored the whole island and no town is quite like Funchal. We love being able to walk everywhere - especially our favorite poncha bars lol - so we have to stay within a reasonable radius around Sé.
@@ruinunes8251 also the weather near the water in Funchal is much much warmer than other parts of the island. It’s crazy that a walk up to Monte from Sé requires a jacket 🥶
I guess what you see depends on your own perspective. I first visited Lisbon in 1979 as a boy, and it was soon after the Revolution, and Portugal was poor and many years away from joining the EU. Then I started coming as an adult regularly about 1993, and if you think nobody knew Lisbon before 2016, that is just your experience. I knew it. I stopped coming around 2010 because I moved to Australia to live. More recently, because of all of these 'new' people 'discovering' Lisbon, which has been the Capital of Portugal for a long time, now the expats have made rents so expensive by creating new demand that can not be fulfilled without displacing Portuguese, it is being spoilt. It isn't Disneyworld. This is peoples home. Personally, apart from those in business which directly benefits from this 'new' interest, the 'Airbnb' landlords ruining the local rental market, the 'discovery' is a very bad thing. You have not discovered anything. You are not contributing anything needed. It is damaging. It has been there for hundreds of years, except now local people can't afford it. Is that good? This benefits nobody except the new arrivals themselves, at the expense of the locals. I think it is a shame. Maybe analyse the effect on local people instead of being so pleased about the food?
As a Portuguese guy myself I like the fact that the majority loves this marvelous city, BUT please stop buy houses and properties here because WE NATIVES can't afford it anymore, living here has become to expensive it's become a TRAGEDY with the rising prices, you can come visit but please don't stay.
I believe the major problem is moslty the big speculators. Buying tons of flats for selling 2-4 years later without caring about the rest, just getting the benefit. I wish this could be prevented, so the price growth would be less artificial. Also the economy should be less tourist oriented and more welcoming to portuguese workers so they could stay in Portugal instead of going to work to Germany etc, bringing value to Portugal and allowing more modern construction and limiting the effects of the real estate bubble. It's a wide and sad problem.
lisboa used to be nice. now is over crowed with visigods, all the prices rise the locals can´t no long live in the city, and the commerce only thinks about geting more and more money from the visigods in the streets. but i love your videos keepon that good work. best regards.
Try Isabela Island in the Galápagos Archipelago next time you're searching for beautiful beaches and wildlife volcanoes and crystal blue bays. Cheers 😊
The amount of endless videos (and thus countless hours of editing) dedicated to the most flattering compliments, this already after several years of touring around up and down and beyond, is quite adorable. I want a silly bronze statue depicting you two walking holding hands smiling somewhere in the tourist areas of Lisbon.
It's all fun and games but Lisbon has become a theme park for tourists and rich expats from far richer countries than Portugal. Slow and steady the Portuguese people are being priced out to the suburbs and it will come a time when only tourists and foreigners sleep in Lisbon. Then people will speak of how the city "lost its soul" or something. I like you guys and the way you portray our country but there are some negatives about this.
We cant change the trajectory. Even if we made daily vlogs telling foreigners to stay away it wouldn’t do anything. This development has happened to every single metropolitan in Europe. It’s a sad reality that there is no inbetween.
Hi Joel and Amelia. That was a nice video to watch. When that lady said that some locals were not that friendly, we need to understand their side. I heard a few times that the locals or the majority of the locals are getting pretty annoyed with the lack of civilised tourism. The “Leave it better than you found” is not found in some cheap tourism. I heard in some areas, at early hours, when the tourists leave the alojamentos locais, they leave the rubbish everywhere. Mass tourism comes with a price unfortunately.
I have lived in Portugal for 12 yrs now and sadly this is true when a place becomes heavily promoted by outsiders with other interests ie in our area of the Algarve we got 'party promoters' flying in people to 'bomb' local villages. It was awful. rude arrogant people who abused the locals by getting legless drunk etc. I love Lisbon and fear this over promotion will have this negative effect. Already locals have been moved out of their homes by greedy landlords putting up the rents to accommodate wealthy tourists . I fear it will lose its wonderful character
I'm not a hardcore "foodie" but I don't remember having especially great food in Lisbon. Probably just got unlucky with my restaurant choices. Oddly enough, the overall "best value" for meals was the food court in a mall near my hotel in the Saldana district. With that said, I am definitely "crazy" about Lisbon - LOVED it there!
This video made me really sad. As someone who used to live there and had to move out due to the life being so expensive in Lisbon it is really sad to see everyone enjoy Lisbon and saying it is accessible when it is only to tourists. Lisbon has changed drastically in the past 6 years, to only cater to tourism and to expats. It is really sad to see. To only see the good side of Lisbon is reductive , Lisbon is beautiful but it is only for someone who isn't Portuguese or doesn't live there with Portuguese salaries. I follow you guys so this is not to offend either you or anyone in this video of course.
I think most people when on a tourist trip dont intellectualize why they love a place they are visiting. Mostly its an emotional response. I think we intellectualize after when we return home.
Lisbon? Pay London prices. Get Istanbul standard. Michelin restaurants in Lisbon? Pay double price compared to Spain. Get mediocre food. 'Normal' restaurants are good though. Weather is generally windy and cold. Dress accordingly.
Lived there for a while... over priced at the moment, you are better off in spain on the coast for example... Lost it's magic due to prices, but i am almost 100% there will be a housing crash in lisbon. At the moment it's like a big holiday resort...
Tourists took over downtown area......I remember when it was possible to take the kids for a walk peacefully without the chaotic confusion 🤷♂️ thats what it is.

It is nice to see all the ancient sites when you visit, but if you were to choose a city for permanent residence, you might prefer one that is more modern.
hey folks - I have a question for you. I'll be in Portugal (from Australia) in roughly a month. I am trying to figure the best way to get from Porto to Ericeira, seems as though I get the train to Lisbon, then double back by bus? Google says it should take less than an hour by bus to Ericeira from Lisbon, but anywhere I go to look at ticket prices says the bus trip is 2hr 30, which seems strange. This is seemingly way more difficult than I thought it would be, any chance you can help a brother out with some genuine inside info?? ❤
The Italian girl was a nationalist, but everyone should be a nationalist or proud of their country. Nationalism is needed in a society in order to preserve culture. Cultural diversity in a society actually destroys culture. To say that Italians only eat pasta is a typical American stereotype. In reality, pasta for Italians is a middle course meal and not the main course. It's basically a side dish that they are very proud of
You can have Lisbon and Portugal in general. If you don't say you love Portugal, people act like there's something wrong with you. It's the European country I like the least. I lived there, and I don't see what all the fuss is about. The people are so depressing. They are always talking about the past. I'm not a fan.
The footage and editing are so on point. This format of interviews is the way to go. Also appreciated that when you said good weather suddenly Amelia's 🍑 shows up 😂
I mean theres been a huge cost of living everywhere you all arent unique. I live in the us in florida and my house has double in value since the pandemic
@@joenandamalie I don't know, I was born and raised here. The difference I think, is that when we talk about that type of European capitals (Rome,Berlin etc) they are way bigger so maybe you feel less the mass tourism/digital nomads and Portugal is (was?) way cheaper then the rest of Western Europe. Anyways, thanks for all the videos and for the interest in Portugal, cheers.
Okay. You guys are great with your videos. but no one knew about Lisbon... you are joking for sure. Europeans know where Lisbon is? okay long time ago, north Americans had no idea that Portugal was a country. but in our days, if you have some kind of geographic knowledge you that Lisbon is the capital of Portugal. Lisbon has very well known during the Second WW because thousands of people moved there and some went to North and South America. many spies landed in Lisbon. During the war, the Saboia Royals moved to Cascais. Nowadays it's another vibe. Younger people have the possibility to travel. Lisbon is basically how Berlin was. Many places to have fun after 9pm. I love that the world is learning about Lisbon with positive reviews. Personally, when I go to Lisbon I avoid the tourist areas. Welcome to Portugal.

Thank you guys for your vlog channel🙏 !speaking about our city and our country! You’re good people
We are coming in June! First time. Would love to meet you. Hope to see you both.
Will always be an amazing city, the gem just isn’t hidden anymore. (:
Wish you had run into my husband and me, we would have talked about the culture, beauty, and amazing Portuguese food.
Next time 😅
I love your videos. I went to Portugal for 3 weeks and enjoyed every city I visited. Lisbon, Porto, nazare, Coimbra, Lagos, etc etc. I wiould move there in a second from California.
Hi Stay Classy!!! We will be in Lisbon in 60 days!! Then a week on your home island, Madeira!!!! For my 60th birthday, so excited!!!
Thank you for being great ambassadors! Yes, Lisbon has changed a lot... we often highlight the bad but there are also sooo many positive things! I lived abroad for 10 years and came back in 2018. Change is part of life! (Also finally our metro line will expand! long time coming) Also what's the name of that last song in the video? You've used it before and I love it x
Good vibes everytime you upload a new video
Thanks so much, Luis!
Hi! You are so funny. Nice views.Thank you for sharing ❤️
Sending love from a Portuguese ❤️
The American couple was not lying the ham and cheese sandwich are way better than what we get in the USA
Hello, I'm from Madeira, from the city of Funchal, I find the city Lisboa very charming . I really liked your video.
Don’t stay in Funchal and you will not hear the dogs, the roosters and the buses. Stay in the other areas. Sorted. 😃
@@ruinunes8251 buuut we wanna spill onto the streets and be in the heart of everything Funchal 💖
It's a river that baths the city, not the Ocean. It's a very big and large river. The name of the river is Tejo. Anyway, great video!
You are right in everything.
As a Portuguese guy myself I like the fact that the majority loves this marvelous city, BUT please stop buy houses and properties here because WE NATIVES can't afford it anymore, living here has become to expensive it's become a TRAGEDY with the rising prices, you can come visit but please don't stay.
"Gringos" are making it so expensive and impossible for the locals to afford living here
Portugal has so many hot men
I believe the major problem is moslty the big speculators.
THIS THIS THIS THIS !! 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Awesome meeting you guys. Love your videos...go Nuggets!
Hi Scott! Great meeting you guys! Go Denver Nuggets Powered by BurgerKing hehehehe
Knicks and NJ Devils 💪
What a beautiful video guys. Thank you so much, from a Lisboner ❤
Its not sm where in the world you are but the people you are with that makes any place great. Sunny weather helps a lot though.
Five years, guys! Five!! 😮
It seems like yesterday when I started watching your videos and Joen was despairing to get the Internet going! 😂
Damn! That does seem like yesterday 😂
lisboa used to be nice. now is over crowed with visigods, all the prices rise the locals can´t no long live in the city, and the commerce only thinks about geting more and more money from the visigods in the streets. but i love your videos keepon that good work. best regards.
Try Isabela Island in the Galápagos Archipelago next time you're searching for beautiful beaches and wildlife volcanoes and crystal blue bays. Cheers 😊
What's nice about bakkeljou? It's a very salty spongee full of grates ...fresh cod-fillet is much much better...
I am crazy about Portugal and even crazier about Lisbon, the city where I was born 70 years ago.
I enjoyed the video !! 😀If I remember right, this is the start of your pilgrimage to Al-Gharba !!!
I don´t understand how can a person go somewhere to know and not be able to try the local food.
@@joenandamalie Oh for sure, it's not any individuals fault, much less your own.
What a time to be a tourist guide. Don t forget to come to Sintra and Cascais.... 🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
15:00 good weather huh? ye sure! i see what you guys did there.... nice one
😂 It's what good weather does!
@@joenandamalie let me tell you, then I want to work as a weatherman. Best view I seen in a while ;)
I'm not a hardcore "foodie" but I don't remember having especially great food in Lisbon. Probably just got unlucky with my restaurant choices. Oddly enough, the overall "best value" for meals was the food court in a mall near my hotel in the Saldana district. With that said, I am definitely "crazy" about Lisbon - LOVED it there!
Another fun and interesting video! Thanks to you both!!
always the best good work
This video made me really sad.
Love it! Do more videos like this one, talking with people! Love ya
❤
Lisbon?
Pay London prices. Get Istanbul standard.
Michelin restaurants in Lisbon?
Pay double price compared to Spain. Get mediocre food.
'Normal' restaurants are good though. Weather is generally windy and cold. Dress accordingly.
Impressionado com o carisma das 2 raparigas do final do vídeo!
A nova geração realmente mudou!!!!
Love Lisbon ❤
Another great video guys! You guys are so great interviwers! 😅
Thanks! We will do more of these!
When people say that Lisbon is very expensive, that just tells me that they have never visited the United States of Inflation LOL
Haha, true! But purchasing power is also a lot stronger. Keep in mind a lot of Portuguese earn less than 1K€ a month.
American are ignorant of how well they live
Lived there for a while... over priced at the moment, you are better off in spain on the coast for example... Lost it's magic due to prices, but i am almost 100% there will be a housing crash in lisbon. At the moment it's like a big holiday resort...
Tourists took over downtown area......I remember when it was possible to take the kids for a walk peacefully without the chaotic confusion 🤷♂️ thats what it is.
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS, SO NICE 👍 AND ALWAYS MAKE ME LAUGH 😂 WITH THE FUNNY THINGS YOU SAY. AT THE END OF A TOUGH DAY SO GOOD TO ENJOY 😊 THE GOOD THINGS ABOUT MY COUNTRY THAT I MISS SO MUCH AND MY ILAND MADEIRA. I LIVE NOW IN USA 🇺🇸 BUT YOU GUYS ARE LIVING IN HEAVEN. LOTS OF HUGS 🤗
I miss Lisbon so much!!!
It is nice to see all the ancient sites when you visit, but if you were to choose a city for permanent residence, you might prefer one that is more modern.
Please try A Venda Lusitana it was the best foodspot i tried while i was in Lisbon. Its so tasty!
Try the Petiscos its Like Tapas in portugese you can share everything its perfect for 2 people.
Great video guys 👌
Thaaanks ♥️
Very nice video. 😉
hey folks - I have a question for you. ❤
Im crazy for Lisbon im from here❤❤😂
Lisboa ❤️❤️❤️
It’s perfect destination for tourists to spend money👍🏻
Hi guys ....thank you .❤❤
The best ever city in Europe 🇪🇺 💙
I still Love Lisboa but ….move to 70 kms Away and find peace again .
Lisboa is for tourists and it’s Ok …is the price .
"back then, no one really knew about Lisbon" -- please!
After all this time in Portugal 🇵🇹 J can speak Spanish but not Portuguese 😂😅😂 you crak me up😂😅
No, no. I speak Spanish with Spanish people and Portuguese with Portuguese people :-))
The Italian girl was a nationalist, but everyone should be a nationalist or proud of their country. Nationalism is needed in a society in order to preserve culture. Cultural diversity in a society actually destroys culture. To say that Italians only eat pasta is a typical American stereotype. In reality, pasta for Italians is a middle course meal and not the main course. It's basically a side dish that they are very proud of
I love your Videos xxx
You can have Lisbon and Portugal in general. If you don't say you love Portugal, people act like there's something wrong with you. It's the European country I like the least. I lived there, and I don't see what all the fuss is about. The people are so depressing. They are always talking about the past. I'm not a fan.
Whats the place to go?
Amazing Lisbon,!
Can't believe after being there for 5 days that woman hadn't tried Portuguese food. What's the point of going ? Great vlog.
You r the best!!! ❤
Muito obrigado pela vossa gentileza.
Lisbon❤
Grandes Embaixadores de Portugal.

Sigo-vos desde o primeiro vídeo em portugal

Bacalhau we bring from Norway
The footage and editing are so on point. This format of interviews is the way to go. Also appreciated that when you said good weather suddenly Amelia's 🍑 shows up 😂
That is what happens when Joen is in charge of editing 😅 Thanks for watching ❤️
I mean theres been a huge cost of living everywhere you all arent unique. I live in the us in florida and my house has double in value since the pandemic
Lisbon is not Lisbon anymore...it's turning into a amusement park for tourists
Perhaps, but I think most big cities are like that from a tourist's perspective... Rome, Berlin, etc
You right. It makes me sad to see so many tourists in my country....POOR PORTUGAL I SORRY TO SEE THAT YOU ARE INVADED BY TOURISTS
OBRIGADO ... OK
