Another amazing video, like always 🙏 My first trip to Lisbon was 26 years ago, so the city is nearly unrecognizable to me today! Even our visit in early 2020 before the THING started was vastly different than our latest trip 2 months ago. We totally agree that Lisbon is a special place that has unique charm and character, but it was great hearing your perspective, seeing the city through your eyes, and aligning with your candid thoughts on the challenges Lisbon faces.
Tourism and gentrification is a bit of a catch 22, isn’t it? The very things that make a place desirable for tourists and aspiring residents can lead to the displacement of locals and the loss of the city’s authentic character. And yet, tourism brings economic benefits to the area and brings in new money to beautify the city, but also drives up the cost of living (and coffee!!) and causes housing prices to skyrocket, making it difficult for locals to afford living in their hometown. However, gentrification also brings in new investments and businesses, but it can also push out small, independent shops and longstanding residents, erasing the cultural and historical identity of a place. Ugh!
Change isn’t just happening to Lisbon - every city we have lived in or wanted to live in (across America, Mexico, Costa Rica, Spain, Turkey, and now Portugal) has met the challenges of over-tourism, gentrification, environmental degradation, and inflation. To quote my hubby: “when you pick up one end of the stick, you also pick up the other.” Meaning: any ‘good’ action you take also results in a ‘bad’ thing, because actions have both desirable and undesirable consequences which cannot be separated. And you cannot break this law - you can only break yourself against the law 😬

Amalie, you said it all. The problem is that Lisboa is losing identity and is no longer a "portuguese" capital. The prices are higher than ever, and the locals are moving away. It is very difficult to have prices like other European capitals, and the minimum wage is less than half. Lisboa is becoming one more tourist trap.

I lived in Lisboa❤️ for around 6 years (until 2017/2018) and I loved it… and I feel actually nostalgic/emotional when I remember it. But yeah, I couldn’t agree more with you right now - Lisboa changed a lot.

I was looking to go back for a short weekend next month and the prices shocked me. I compared with the prices of my hotel and travel from 2016 and the difference is insane. Costs more now for a 3 night stay than it did for a 10 day trip in 2016. Obviously inflation is a thing but it's way beyond that, I feel sorry for the locals who live there

Lol 'big booty leopard '!!! So, we moved to Lisbon almost 2 years ago after falling in love on a trip...We still love it, but due to increasing prices and wanting more space we luckily found a hidden gem 30 mins north of Lisbon...No one talks about it! Prices are still 'cheap' if you stay out of the touristy areas! We had lunch in Lisbon just today...31€ for 4 at a Portuguese Cafe hidden in our old neighborhood in Avenidas Novas and it was delicious, as always! I saw you were in Campo Pequeno and my favorite resto serves an incredible menu do dia at 11,95 and it changes daily and it's a combo French/Portuguese. My point...If you know how to 'shop around' and eat with the local Portuguese you can still find affordable! Rents are out of control, but just outside of Lisbon, but still in Lisbon municipality affordable still exists and buying was more affordable for us!! As for the other side of the river, we looked there and did not like it so much, especially Barreiro!

Ohhhhh, I hate to even talk about it too much, but since you asked...Torres Vedras! Why? Still 'more' affordable, easy Lisbon center access, 20km from Ericeira/Santa Cruz, beautiful views (we have one!), not the 'silver coast', but almost, lots of history (we have a fortress from Napoleon's invasion of Portugal in our backyard), and honestly peace and quiet with easy access to Lisbon center(A8). Only downside is less English spoken fluently, but that's on me...Learn Portuguese! Anyhow...Still discovering, but overall LOVE it!!

But regarding Lisbon VS Madeira, I was born in Lisbon and grew up there (Calçada do Cascão) before I moved to Amsterdam. Obviously I love Lisbon to dead! But if I had to choose now, to live in? I would prefer Madeira!
Last year I was on Madeira for the first time and last week for the second time, man I love the place! It has everything and I could fly my DJI mini 3 pro everywhere! Nobody bothered me or gave me funny looks. :) Thanks for answering my question about flying in Madeira last time by the way!

Regarding prices, yeah Lisbon is expensive, but if you use your head it is doable! Like the Late, don't order a Late, order a galão same thing different name, different price. ;)
And regarding Saldanha, I agree, much better than Chiado to live. I would even prefer Campo de Ourique.
Regarding Madeira, please don't over sell it! Wait until I can convince my wife to buy a house there so I can still afford it. ;)
not rambling at all, it's all information. I wish more places would try to keep that authenticity that makes them special. Being welcoming does not mean becoming like everything else out there. Visiting in July and these videos really help. Great job.

well I am Portuguese, and I always take my breakfast outside, because is one of my favorite things and 5 years ago would be like 2,30€ now is 2,80/ 2,90 some places is 3,20€, always the same a cheese good bread sandwish and a cafe late ( galao ) , so yes more expensive but not like in the touristic AXIS that you go, you only go 90% of the time in Lisbon to touristic and foreigner living areas. Just for the record I live outside Lisbon , Cascais area but work in Campo de Ourique, and the price mentioned is for example 2,80€ in campo de Ourique that is a very central and even a bit touristic but prices are still "Portuguese", but well you have to be local to know more where to go....

We were in Madeira in January, then visited Lisbon (stayed at the Jupiter Hotel in Saldanha) and hung out in Chiado. Yes, prices are higher and people are stressed since Covid.
I'am from Brazil and my first trip to Lisbon was in 2017, was impressive because was cheaper than São Paulo, was possible drink good wines in good restaurants spending 10/12 euros.
However, I back to Lisbon last year in December and was scaried, the prices to eat out rose esponentially. Nowadays, eat out in Lisbon is expensive as Madrid, Barcelona and maybe Rome.

Woman from Montreal. I’m from Montreal. There’s not a chance that Lisbon is more expensive. If you’re talking about Airbnb and hotel, roughly the same. Grocery and eating out, grocery a bit less in Lisbon, eating out is double at least in mtl. I was just in Portugal this last summer. Family of 5. Was costing me less than 80euro to eat out. We spent just over 100eu by the beach in cascais, thy was with bottle of wine and some beer and drinks( soft) for kids.My bday in mtl in a so so restaurant(beni Hana) was Ali most $400 cad.

True and at least in Portugal, there is no tipping and taxes on the top of the meal ! With 8 euros, you can have a very good meal and they give you the wine for free usually. Can't beat that.....
Thank you for your honesty!! I am single and I moved to Costa Rica a few years ago 2017 (before Covid hit) I wish you can answer my question as to will I be lonely? I am a very extroverted, outgoing person. I was soooo incredibly lonely in Costa Rica😢 very family oriented country, tough. They were "coldly" polite. It was beautiful but not a match, not a fit for me. Honestly, do you think I'd struggle in Portugal as well? I'm researching and I'm researching the Azores area as well. @@TheLexy131313 - responsible? That would be a stretch. The reason Lisbon is what it has become is a strong agenda from the government. Golden Visa has been particularly detrimental as it has created this artificial level of pricing with low supply and high demand. Yes, we have advertised Lisbon as a great place to live and visit, but our channel is not nearly big enough to truly have made an effect. I also think that Lisbon becoming what it is, is inevitable. It happens to every corner of Europe. Portugal was just the last of it.
You can not blame the tourists or foreigners for wanted to live in beautiful Portugal! Blame the local government!!

I'm planning to move to Lisbon next year, and have many worried. I still need to do a lot more research. Me and my GF moving there want to embrace the real Lisbon and be respectful as possible. I don't think we will live in the dead center of Lisbon, but rather the outskirt of the city to save some money on rent. This video has been very helpful.
Went to Lisbon from Amsterdam, absolutely loved the city would come back in a heartbeat but besides the taxi's Lisbon wasn't as cheap as we read online.
As a matter of fact, when visiting the grocery store I noticed that the vegetarian meat my wife always eats was a whole lot more expensive (almost 30%) in Lisbon than it was here in the local supermarket.
Asked around and rent is the same it was in Amsterdam most of the times, difference is that in Amsterdam the average salary is around 3400 euro net per person and in Lisbon the people mentioned they were struggling to make 2000 euro net per month sometimes.
I would move there in a heartbeat because of the weather and people but not because of the food or for financial gains.

I was visited Lisbon 2014, for 7 days. Vacation with parents. From 2014 to now i just trying to learn Portuguese language and go alone to the trip into Lisbon again. If first time was amazing than second time must be so much better.

There are a zillion people on RUclips advising that Portugal, and particularly Lisbon and Porto are the best places for retirees, due to lower cost of living. Of course these youtubers are foreigners, many Americans and brits, and they don't know zilts about the culture. In the end they are economic immigrants, who could not afford a certain lifestyle in their countries, not different from the economic emigrants who left Portugal in the 1960's and 1970's, but they call themselves expats. It is mostly irritating, the whole lot... the tremendous influx of foreigners is causing an increase in goods and services, affecting the economy to the detriment of the Portuguese.
Joen and Amelie, I appreciate your love of Portugal and your honesty. Your work is so good that the Department of Tourism Portugal should pay you... as to all the others that followed in your footsteps, I wish they would go elsewhere. (One particular brit was so obsecessed with public toilets, that every video in every town they spent 10 to 15 minutes looking for, evaluating, or complaining about the lack of public toilets. As if London had a public toilet in every corner...)
Or even worse. I saw a video once made by a somewhat older American couple about Portuguese food and how mediocre it was. They didn't understand the fuss about Portuguese cuisine. They thought it was really overrated.......

@@TheLexy131313 it is sad isn't it? Years ago I was at the fruit market in AlbufeiraI with a friend from UC Berkeley, who had just finished his Ph.D., waiting for a colleague from the same program. She complained that "these foreigners don't speak English..." referring to the fruit vender, an elderly farmer... I clarified for her that "this is Portugal, he's Portuguese and he speaks Portuguese. You are the foreigner here and with that attitude you are not welcomed."

You have to compare the prices and go to the less expensive places. Also when you speak English, prices are usually more expensive I noticed. I tried to speak a little Portuguese and prices are way cheaper.
Lisbon is great unless you're Portuguese. then it's "complicated". Sad to see the locals being priced out of their city.
5:30 This Government in particular. Their members and the party members are almost exclusively real estate investors (as opposed to having diverse investments like stocks and bonds). So it is in their interest that prices keep going up.
For me peak Lisbon was 2016 before the Websumit.
I'm planning to visit Lisbon for the very first time this year. For me, this visit is exploring more about my heritage (son on Portuguese immigrants from the Azores). On the one hand, its great to see Lisbon getting attention, investment, and drawing people in - but at the same time, I worry about the long term effects. If the locals cannot stay, it transforms the neighbourhoods. It starts with some of the shops, and small businesses. Then, the buildings themselves - they modernize losing the older charm that was there before. The glorious old churches start to empty, and then only a handful of the touristy ones will be preserved, With new builings, high turn-over, I see the willingness to have the azuelejos, and the calcada portuguesa give way to painted concrete and ashphalt.
I'm super excited to see Lisbon, and yet, I feel an apprehension, as whatever wonderful thing I will comes across, won't be there for long.
I still pay 1 euro max for an espresso. You just have to search the right places!
Not to worry my friend. I'm from a similar situation as you, son of Portuguese immigrants. We, the Portuguese, love the world and its people. We were after all the first global empire. But there is one thing that distinguishes the Portuguese from other Europeans.
We are and will always be lovers of tradition. It's not that we don't embrace the present or progress, we certainly do. It's just that our traditions are our roots our essence. It's what keeps us grounded and strong. Willing to face adversity knowing that there's nothing we can't overcome. Portugal's strength comes from its people. They 're strong because they know who they are. They know where they come from and where they're going.
Well, can one expect to bring in all those non-resident visa investors that come from afar and that should not change things? Obviously, it needs to be balanced with the needs of the PT people, which I think the Gov is now trying to do. Let‘s hope they will not overdo things. ❤

i'm in the process to move to lisbon for work (and to escape war lol), but i'm worried i will only contribute more to the unfortunate globalization of it. people visiting or stopping for a while in there should not shape the entire place and drive locals away but it's sadly understandable why it is happening since all of europe is crazy expensive lately! i've lived in athens pre-covid and was shocked at the living costs, and that was with me making almost 300 euros more than the average greek, ~760 euros as a base wage is insane, i saw the crappiest listed apartments for like 850 euros! i wont be able to afford living in an apartment either, not a studio or a loft even, instead sharing one with other girls. i really want to experience portugal but i'm having second thoughts now.

Randomly meeting the two of you on our first night was definitely a highlight! We've fallen in love with the city and mostly, the people. We are planning our next trip to Portugal in September... @stayclassyvlog those are not Harry Potter replicas, they're students. I've even read that hogwards is inspired on Iberian Universities. You'll see those black capes (Trajes académicos) a lot in Portugal. Not because they're really big fans of Harry Potter, but because they're really proud of wearing that cape (for enduring the initiation rituals and for representing their university). I guess it's somewhat similar to Sororities and Fraternities in the US. But much less cult like, I think. (I have no clue about US American sororities/fraternities) Anyway, it's a big thing for students and most will make friends for a lifetime during those activities (Praxes académicas).

The real problem is the rent and the price of the houses. Cost of living is still insanely low compared to many other Europeans countries. Only Spain is cheaper. But that 5 euros coffee is very misleading. I live in Marques and in the bar down the road an espresso is 60 cents. In a fancy coffee shop nearby you pay 1.80 euros, but it’s good coffee that cost a lot per kg. Those places you are going are the super touristy spots. Even in Piazza San Marco in Venice you pay an espresso 10 euros. That lady that says Montreal is less expensive than Lisbon doesn’t know what she’s talking about. Had lunch a month ago in Chiado in a nice Tasca. Appetizer for 2, 2 sea bass with vegetables, water, bottle of wine and 2 coffee and the bill was 36 euros. Small beers are 1.5 euros, in Italy they are 5. So it’s still very cheap, especially if you have foreign income. Portuguese people crack me up when they say it’s our fault (digital nomads and influencers) if we are in this situation. That’s BS. The government is the real responsible here. Why they don’t increase salaries? Why they don’t free up all the abandoned buildings they own? Funny thing is that the same Portuguese people that complain have been voting for this socialist regime for years.
Great to see you again my friends! I first visited Lisbon in 2018, then again in 2019. I loved it but couldn’t imagine living there. It’s too dense for me, though I would visit regularly if I lived in Portugal. I’m more of a country/beach person. The Portuguese government seems to be promoting NWO migration patterns. 🤔 I don’t mean to be controversial but excessive multiculturalism is a proven recipe for disaster. The experiment has never been successful. The Portuguese culture will soon lose dominance in the big metro areas like Lisbon. Give it 20 or 50 years and it could be unrecognizable.
I think 5-10 years is enough before it will be just like London / Paris. Unfortunately!
I really love Lisbon. Food, people, nature - it's all wonderful. But the cost of renting and the cost of buying real estate in relation to the quality of the same real estate is huge. The property quality is terrible at 95% (1990 -2000 level or even worse). PS: compare the quality of real estate in your (homeland) Denmark and in portugal.. it's like day and night (but the cost is already almost the same).
It seems that foreigners coming to live in Portugal will have a brake. The tax issue was an advantage for foreigners but in 2024 this will change for new residency applications. From what I understand, the exemption will end and they will pay the same as nationals, or very close.

Since 1981 Porto and Lisbon lost inhabitants, respectively more than 120k and 200k. Portuguese did not want to live in the center, only poor people would, everyone want to go to the suburbs and the cities were dying.
This new cry about how the cities are unaffordable, makes me think how the memory is shorts not long ago most did not want to live there and cities were a bit dead especially Porto. Now they’re vibrant and lively! And as a Portuguese: I love that!

I was born in Lisbon. Live in the Netherlands since 1970 but keep visiting Portugal almost every year.
My wife and kinds a Dutch and when in Portugal, we usually eat in Centros Comerciais.
Rio Sul shopping Seixal, Almada Forum, Columbo, Vasco da Gama etc. etc. Menu's costs around 7-10 euros including drinks. These places are hardly secret. Obviously when people want to eat in trendy places (bars, lunch rooms) and luxurious restaurants, you will pay a much higher price. Portugal has always been fairly expensive for tourists. Even in the 60th when we lived in Pontinha. That is what kept mass tourism away from Portugal unlike Spain. But there is enough for all price ranges, still today.
Expensive is general is Algarve and even there, there are alternatives.

Thanks to the taxes and inflation its crazy expensive, even for the regular citizens that shop and eat at local small restaurants outside of tourist areas.. the cost of life is thru the roof... but I guess that's everywhere.
Portugal is for the tourists, or nomads who have a lot of money, as a young portuguese i think i have to go way from my own country because its impossible to rent a place in Portugal and have a good life here. The governement forgets about is own pleople.

5 euros for an expresso??!! Unless it is outdoors and there is a tax service included, it is insane (and illegal)! I go quite often to Lisbon (though seldom downtown) and I usually pay 1 euro for a coffee. And the quality of the coffee is very good!

This with also a very strong culture of paying the very least by every portuguese boss, making it very hard to find a job that pays at least 1000€/month.
As someone who grew up in Lisbon (Amadora) from 1992, Portugal ain’t as cheap as it once was. My breakfast used to cost me about €3,5 and now it’s creeping to €6/7. Unfortunately the wages are still stagnant for locals, working class is being pushed to areas like Alverca when I was young we would class as living in the sticks (far away).
Joen is making sense, Portugal needed tourism and unfortunately these are the side effects of attracting wealth, Rossio, Alfama and the adjacent areas look way better then it did in the 90’s.
Well said, don't come here without a job, while in most place a BICA (drink this with sugar) costs still around 70 cents, supermarket food is almost equal than in the north, let alone renting, it's becoming a living nightmare for the underpaid locals, moving out is the only solution for them, that being said please come back :)

I've always regarded Lisbon as a place I love to hang around, where I go to have fun, but wouldn't live in it.
Although the reason is rather due to a personal preference in small towns for a residence.
