My absolute faves are Open Gate Quilts and Sew Sampler. They have the best bang for your buck in my opinion. I didn't like Mrs Quilty. I've seen their fabric on Temu 😬. Sew What was too expensive. Cotton Cuts was fabric only with no projects. Ginger Quilter is all holiday themed, which isn't my thing. Precuts wasn't for me either. I'm a subscription box connoisseur at this point 😂😂.

I just found your channel a few minutes ago. I've not heard good things about Mrs. Quilty from several channels I've watched, but then again, I've seen other channels sing their praises. That made me wonder if they're just hype because they're getting paid to promote it. I generally am skeptical about gushy reviews, so thank you for showing pros/cons of each subscription company.

Hi! First time viewer here. I have subscribed to the Fat Quarter Shop's Sew Sampler for a couple years now. I am always looking for other subscription boxes that I might enjoy. So far, I've stuck with FQS and their Sew Sampler. A couple things I've learned may help you or others while you evaluate these kits. 1) At Fat Quarter Shop they seem to give you ample fabric to complete the project. Some places give you just enough to finish - but what if you make a mistake? FQS is generous in the amount of fabric you have to work with. Often you have leftovers to put into your stash. 2) They have a terrific blog where you can find all their videos - and there are a lot of them! They have a good selection of beginner videos that can be very helpful. I"m going through those myself to learn or relearn what I've forgotten. 3) Also, each month they have an alternative pattern that you can find on the blog. Just use the link that comes with the kit to find. So that is 2 patterns that work with the fabric for that month. Plus you get the extra pattern in each kit. That pattern is part of a year long Block of the Month quilt. At the end of the year you'll have the patterns to make a sampler quilt. Anyway, I do find FQS to be a quality company and they work hard to produce a good product. They are so easy to get hold of if you have questions. They have a facebook group for the sew sampler club too where people post pictures of their finished quilts and share ideas about how they used their fabric. You can also ask questions in there. If anyone will know how to clean a gluey iron, that group will! Missouri Star also has similar perks that go with their products. Both companies are quality businesses and you can feel assured that you are in good hands. Now, I'm going to have a look at your No. 1 choice. Thanks for sharing!

Absolutely without a doubt to get things off of your iron. Use a Mr. clean scrub pad. It works on all iron services and takes out the nastiest of everything without damaging your iron soleplate. Be sure to rinse good when you’re finished and always always use your shot or burst of steam in your iron before you actually at try to iron your fabrics to clean it each time. Also, you should dump your water out of your iron after each use. I usually use a dry iron and a spray Mr rather than take a chance on my iron leaking onto my beautiful fabrics.

***OK, this ended up being rather long. So the summary is: I've only tried the Sew Sampler box from Fat Quarter Shop. I really love it, but had to unsubscribe for financial reasons. When I can afford it again, I will definitely subscribe again!.***
I'm on a fixed income, so I can't afford to try multiple boxes at the same time. I was a Sew Sampler subscriber for years, and I loved it! It was like getting a Christmas present every month. I started around 2017 as a beginning quilter. After watching unboxing videos for several months, I made a list of possible choices, and narrowed it down to 1 subscription. However, after I finally made the decision, that box was discontinued! YIKES! (Sorry I don't remember the name of it now.) Sew Sampler was my second choice, so I went with that one. I never regretted it.
As a beginner, I needed fabric, notions, patterns and tutoring. Sew Sampler checked all of those boxes. So if it is so great, why did I unsubscribe? I started doing BOM's, also with Fat Quarter Shop, along with other fabric stores, and I simply couldn't afford to do all of that and Sew Sampler too. Plus the cost of living and inflation is maxing out my little Social Security check earlier and earlier each month. Since a BOM is a contract that you really can't get out of, I had to let something go. Having said that, however, as soon as I get the BOM's paid for, I will definitely re-subscribe to the Sew Sampler box! (BOM: Block of the Month)

I always say, “every project is a learning experience.” I’d be all for a box that’s for younger sewists. I don’t like the old lady-ish fabrics and quilt designs. I personally want to start with easy jelly roll quilts. Ones where you can just relax and turn your brain off. In my opinion the best three boxes are Bella Rose, Open Gates and Pastry Shop. Both Bella Rose and Open Gates provide complete products for the main projects and they use their own patterns. They both have a secondary and sometimes third project and provide everything but the fabric since they are considered "stash buster" projects. They also provide an additional block of the month or extra pattern and they both have tutorials with Bella Rose doing a Zoom type gathering/retreat once every other month.
Open Gates is monthly and Bella Rose is bi-monthly. The Pastry Shop is also a great box that comes out every 6 weeks. You get most everything for the project, sometimes you might need background. All the fabrics are top of the line for all three boxes. All three boxes have notions and include some type of edible treat.
Bella Rose started their boxes in January of this year, so they are really new. Open Gates has been going for several years and The Pastry Shop is a couple of years old. They each offer something different and I would compare them to each other in price and value - def getting your value with all three boxes.
The other box that I'd like to add for your consideration is called Sweetwater. I waited a year and half to get off the wait list! They come out every three months and it is 100% their fabric line, so if you like Sweetwater fabric you'll love their quarterly subscription box. You need to read carefully because they do have different boxes like you can get fabric labels with your name or get them without for your quilt backs. Anyway, you should take a look at Sweetwater Company.
If you like Alison Glass fabrics she started a subscription box, limited time, that will come out quarterly but it is expensive - I'd compare it to Julie's at Intrepid Thread and she does the Tilda and Liberty fabrics. Alison Glass is brand new but you'd really want to read thoroughly the sign-up instructions and check to see if you like her fabrics. I LOVE her fabrics, very soft and vibrant and they wash up beautifully.

I have quite a large stash since I have been quilting for years. I have been making some scrap quilts, to try and use up some of my fabric. I am not sure they would be a good idea for me. They do sound fun, oh.

I think I mentioned this before. I subscribed to the knitting box by the same company; directions were horrible (and I’m a decent knitter). The yarn in the first box wasn’t bad. The yarn in the second box was rough. The second box required a length of cable needle and they sent 2 short needles to add up to that length.
I think the other boxes are you are evaluating are affiliated with brick and mortar or online stores…not sure about Mrs. Quilty.

@@crafterslog I wondered if Mrs. Quilty might actually be Temu products? Temu prices are much better though, I think several places get some of the notions from Temu since it is more affordable. If it doesn't have a company name on it like Clover, etc. you have to wonder.

@@GinaGrowe not to be a downer, but many temu products come from factories that use slave labor.

I have ordered Mrs Quilty two separate times now I am still very disappointed with this subscription. Have enjoyed Fat quarters box since they started. I use it to build my stash up. Sew What Box I am on the fence with. More than likely will stop the subscription! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I'm curious, have you ever taken a quilt class? It might help you understand how to read patterns if you haven't. I appreciate it when kits show you how to cut the fabric as they only give so much. You are a bit hard to follow, but I'm sure you will find your groove. Honestly, I would probably be all over the place as well. 😂 A little advice, don't use a rotary cutter if you've been drinking. And always, always close your rotary cutter before putting it down. I wanted to add that I appreciate your honesty. It would be interesting to see you revaluate some of these earlier boxes after you've become more experienced. A then vs. now type of thing.

    • @crafterslog
      @crafterslog  3 месяца назад

I have never taken a quilt class that covered basics. It was more of let's make this and ask questions if you have any. I was hoping for more of machine basics and quilting terminology/pattern interruptions. I highly doubt I will drink alcohol while cutting/sewing. I am too paranoid.

I appreciate you doing a video to compare boxes but I will admit I struggle to remember what box you were talking about as you went along. It might have helped if you had held up each box as you went along, green screened a picture of the box under discussion, broke the video up into chapters for each box. I did like the wrap up at the end though, thank you.

Mrs. Quilty I didn’t care for they mess up my first box and customer service is awful. So I cancelled after 3 months due incorrect items or missing things (never received any of the free gift that supposed to come with the box. By the shipping is not included. TQC subscription everything is great and it’s always a surprise however, the cost is too high and a lot of the notions is starting to be repeated. FQS I had about 2 years of the subscription before trying the other two companies their stuff is great too but again notions were starting to be repetitive. So at this time I’m not subscribing to anything of the 3 companies. Currently I’m giving Sweetwater a try.
