250 hours on the KX500. Bought them both new, a '97 then traded it for an '04. Still got it in the shed, only 54 hours. Thanks for the post. A day on a 500 is always the best day you can have on a dirt bike.
Sorry, 1year later. This is absolutely awesome 😎 the longer I watch the kx, the more I like it. Then the screen changes to the cr and smile creeps across my face instantly!
Amazing both bikes. I love the sound, the smell, the vibe, everything about 2 stroke dirt bikes. I rode a few YZ490, CR500 and a KTM 495. Never owned any myself thankfully never wiped on any of them. All I know is these things are huge buzzsaws on the power band. When you get into it and she starts sawing the wood you best have your body in the right position and solid daylight in front of you.
I've owned THREE 1989 KX500s, 1 1987 which fell off a trailer and I didn't realize till I got to the track, and 1 1986 which a park of mind who wasn't racing at the time sold to me at a ridiculous price. Thanks, Kevin B. 💪🏿😎💪🏿
I have both! A '96 CR and a '97 KX. (And a '83 YZ490) The CR is a great track bike thats good on the trail. The KX is a great trail bike thats good on the track. They are bith great, but the CR is definitely more race oriented than the KX, but Big Green is no slouch when its track time. They are both great!
Started on a '69(in '71) Hodaka ace 90, then moved up to a new 74 Dirt Squirt, next was a new but obsolete'74 CZ 250 red frame, then after a big gap I bought an 84 CR 480(4 Gears were more than enough), then my last dirt bike was a 87 KX 250 cuz I knew that a 500 could do way more than I could. Great times, looking to get back on the dirt, Scrambles style-or flat track. Can't wait to get back out there. PS Just Give me a 500, any 500 will do.
Love em both but I love the cr way more. That cr is exactly how I’d build a cr500 great video too, he has such a cool Riding style. His whips look like he’s riding a mountain bike it’s so sick
I bought a 2000 kx500 back in 2014. I was the 3rd owner. The bike was raced in hare scrambles by the original owner. It had boyesen reeds, an fmf burly pipe and pro circuit muffler. Everything else was original or stock. Not sure about the motor. I cleaned up and replaced a few parts on the bike to make sure everything was proper and safe and the bike ran flawlessly for the 4 years I owned it. Such a fun bike especially in wide open terrain and the sand dunes. You could also lug the bike up the steepest hills like a tractor and it would never stall. The two things I didn't like about the bike were the handling and brakes. I ended up selling the bike because I was moving out of town for a few years and wouldn't be able to ride for that time. If anyone gets a chance to ride or even own a 500cc 2 stroke, I highly recommend it. Totally worth it!
Once upon a time when you could buy these bikes the logic was if you live near a Kawasaki dealer you buy the Kawasaki. If you live near the Honda dealer you buy the Honda. If you get a KX500 learn to clean the valve at the exhaust and you're golden. If I were to buy one today it would be the Honda.
The last CR 500 I rode was my buddies 2001 which was 15 years ago.... Compared to my 2004 KX 500 I can remember that the CR handled better and fealt more suited for motocross.... Either way both bikes are awesome units..... I think my girlfriend like them more then I do....Lol.
@@nick-yc6ww I must admit all around the Honda is better, especially ergonomically.... Just feels more comfortable and adaptable.... I can jump off my 450 onto my YZ 125 or 250 and within a short amount of time I can feel like I'm riding them all the time, I cant do that with my KX 500.... I feel I would have to ride that bike every day for a month to get used to it and I raced and rode 250 two strokes for 15 years.... But that's me I'm sure others could adapt a lot faster.
Rig them where she can ride 2 up. The vibrations from these 2 strokes will have her tearing you up when you get home. Or perhaps before you make it back. 😎
Great vid . Neither is best, Honda better looking ,better brakes and better for the tighter MX tracks . Got an '04 KX500 had 'em since new from '97 maybe 250 hours on them. Bit more power on the green bike due to the power valve which the Honda doesn't have . The green bike is a better machine for the longer tracks too . Fast stuff out in the desert. The Honda is slightly heavier but only by about one or two kg's . Got an '01 Honda in the shed too, zero hours . Thanks for posting, I'm a fan of both of them .
I'm a die hard kx guy. I currently own a 88 kx500, 94 kx250 and a kx100 I built for my son and stuffed a 87 kx125 in it. Every time I ride my 500, I have to tighten every bolt. I've fixed more cracks in the frame than I can count. I finally cured a lot of the vibration by putting gussets at just about any bend in the frame that was more than 45°. Constant... Maintenance....
CastrolRMK60 definitely have to agree on that. Kawasakis were terrible back then for stripped fasteners and bolts vibrating loose. Honda build quality is second to none. Or at least they used to be. Don't know anymore. My last Honda that I rode was a 97 CR 250 , I don't miss it at all but it was reliable. I do own a 00 CR500 but it sits warm and clean in my shop.
@2:30... some of those track sections look like textured concrete rubble ! You take a dive on that stuff and your going to be feeling it for a few months. 😎
In 1991 as sweaty 16 year old a friend let me have a go on his cr500, I thought I was the dogs bollocks until I put her into 3rd and pinned it,spat me clean of the back! Both classics, on the same track the Honda would have the edge for me just a great looking bike! But Kawasaki has more raw power in the straights, not as fun in the corners. 👍
200 hours on the KX500 maybe a few more. '04 still in the shed. Have to say the CR500 is the prettier bike . The Honda has the better brakes and carves the lines much better for the MX tracks. Similar horsepower, the KX500 has a few more ponies but the power-valve helps it torque it self out of the equation. Top gear front wheel up, traction permitted any day of the week. I'm no expert , only had about 20 hours on a CR500 . Thanks for posting. Got an '01 CR500 in my shed, still got the plastic on the seat. Zero hours. The 500's go alright.....
