Great work! I see by the attire that this is a dance education class in a school setting not a studio. You may have only 40 mins a week with the students and the classes are huge looks like 30 plus. Each student is engaged and seem to have a gasp understanding and introduction to Dunham technique. Well done teacher!
Someone is not doing a good playing the drums. It cannot be a Miss Dunham moves technique without out the Haitian drums The magic of the sound that embraces the all the body and the technical move according to the rhythms. If you do not believe me, go to her site and you will see how she danced when she started her group in Haiti. or visit Ayikodans website or Haitiandanseco, you will understand. The moves are in the drum's rhythmics. there was no harmony in the sound, that is why there was no coordination, and why they were having a hard time responding Watch again Cathrine Dunham performed with her Haitian musicians you will see the difference, It's not an advertising. I just want to help you understand the dance moves from the culture she had inherited it. That' where she had learned them and made them hers.
Your concerned about the drums....what's important is that the technique is being taught properly... when you do not have live drummers you use the best music that you can find. Let make sure that we are speaking of the same person Her name is Katherine Dunham not, I do not know who (Cathrine) !!!
This is a nice class for youth and I can see that they are enjoying themselves; however, this is not a representation of the technique. For instance, brushing the floor, a true flat back, etc. I love that these youth are getting into it and encourage the teacher to check out the Dunham Technique dvd put out by the library of congress.
this is very much a representation of the technique... from someone that has taken her classes at workshops, studied under one of Katherine Students as a professor in college as well as had the opportunity to perform in a performance, in recognition of Katherine Dunham.
