- Are Irish fish and chips any good? The big question is are Irish fish & chips as good as English Fish and Chips? Is The Irish Chipper as good as The English Chippy? Well we are in Galway in Ireland to review McDonagh's serving fish and chips since 1902. It's an Irish Institution. If you are looking where to eat in Ireland then maybe this seafood restaurant in Galway is for you.

One thing I really like about your videos is how you show the shops, bars, parks and surrounding areas. As someone who likes to travel it certainly enhances the whole thing for me.
Another great comedy duo, keeping us smiling 🙂 loving your work chaps.
Been there a few times, best fish and chips in our opinion is the Fish Shack in Malahide, also a lovely part of Ireland ☘
In 3 months you've travelled for food reviews from the North to the South, Tenerife and Ireland - What an amazing channel !
Thank You. USA Next :0)

Tanks a million for the video which was grand!
Great vlog Lee it’s good to see you in Ireland 🇮🇪
Hi Guys, Quay street looks really nice and the chipper looks fantastic and I love the Irish music on the vlog, looking forward to seeing the next one
Lee your a legend nobody can take that away from you your vlogs are top marks
Nice, A livestream earlier on today then a Darren John video now a MacMaster and The Crackmasrwe video nice, Take care you both and keep safe. Can't wait for more Irish videos to come
Enjoy. Loving the vlogs as always. 🥰🌞🥰Xxx
Love the names of the pubs and restaurants 🤣🙌great place to have fish and chips in looks good fish 👍making me hungry here now 😋 great choice of music Lee 🎶👍😊😘xx
7.3 Ireland is great for Bacon &Cabbage and Lamb i know i was brought up in Kerry
Just catching up on the vlogs ,got to say Daniel I'm loving your home town xx
Hiya boys! I have to say I love that leetle quaint shopping area. Looks off the charts as DJ would say. The fish at first looked a leetle like small Rock not cod. Didn’t think much of the chips,. They looked a little pale and lifeless. Peas I wasn’t sure on them. Delightful to see happy go lucky Daniel bringing some comedy and cheerful banter with you ☘️ can’t wait to see more vlogs with your both . Score wise I’d give that a 7
😊😊 look forward to this and the craic Lads
That Mc Donagh is actually Pat Mc Donagh , same dude that owns the SuperMac crap fast food chain scattered across Ireland.
Who told ya that lie?
@@pearcegolding3544 it isn't, why do think it is ? unless it has changed ownership in the last few years but from the recording pics of Pat Mc Donagh are on the wall...
@@fcunitedforever8677 oh so a picture means you own a business? That's new to me. It's in his extended family man named PJ who is the son of the previous owner Coley runs it now. Before that it was Liam and others in the Mcdonagh family. Pat has nothing to do with it, Clown.
The Magpie Cafe in Whitby is really good, fish and chips from there was excellent when I had it a few years back. Cooked in beef dripping which is always a bonus and I think the cafe has been in the good food guide quite a few times.
Dark peas will because they are probably natural colour and not nuked with dye.
If you want a trick when making mushy peas, use the dried peas and when 'mushing' them, add some garden peas that you have 'mushed' and mix them in... also works well when making a traditional peas soup... adds a bit of natural colour and taste.
When I did Dublin ,Longford ,Galway ,carrick on the Shannon Sligo for me the best pint was in Sligo
Mcdonaghs have a good rep over here... your food looked fresh and plentiful although I thought the curry sauce a little bit thin ? A solid 7.5 out of 10 for me. Galway's a good spot, between showers.
The best Fish and Chips I had in Galway was at Moran’s the Weir just outside of Galway. It’s a beautiful little cottage type restaurant with the best seafood you could ask for. If you’re after the best pint of Guinness then you’re spoiled for choice but my recommendation would be The Quays pub or Monroes Tavern. The best pint used to be Murphy’s bar but since Paddy Murphy sadly passed away last year it’s not reopened after lockdown and is now up for sale.
How many moons ha ha ha ha you two have us in stitches ,you bring out the best in each other 🌟🌟🌟
Great vlog Lee and Daniel keep safe
Never been to Ireland, Galway looks a nice place and the fish n chips looked decent….but like you say there maybe better out there . Enjoying watching you and Dan 👍👍👍
I’d give them a 10 just by the look of it and the mushy peas looks yummy 😘😋😋. And when you cut into the fish you could hear how crispy the batter was 😘😘😘
Nice review lovely place
Best wishes
MM👍 beautiful gig fish and those chips looked amazing, not sure about the batter or the peas but it looked damn good!by sight 9/10
Ohh my word lived the walk to see the shops and the people great and wow that looked amazing although not sure on the peas I like mine a bit creamy
Only had the pleasure of going to Ireland once...but them Irish pubs look very inviting...🍺.....
You should've tried the Smoked Cod. I've watched way too many Fish & Chips reviews from the UK and I've never seen anyone try it.
You're right 👍 smoked cod is gorgeous and rarely reviewed ✌️
@@martindunstan8043 is it sold in the UK?
@@Una2006 yeah👍 fishmongers if you have one or fish counters in most superstores possibly on pre- packed but depends where you are,cod loin is best(bit pricey)👍
Looked good guys. You and ya fish n chips Lee lol 😂 fish looked fab. 😎
Good vlog, looks a lovely part of Ireland, om presentation I would say 7.5, look nice big chips, fish on the medium size, But if It's tasty and good quality enjoy .
Love the Irish accent, many years ago i had an Irish friend. When i met his father one day, he had the broadest Irish accent you could imagine... and he could talk at a million miles an hour too. My friend literally had to be my interpreter when his father spoke to me. 😆 My score today Lee would be 7.0/10... as the chips looked a little anemic to me... the mushy peas looked overcooked like they'd lost all their liquid, while simmering away in a saucepan for too long... and the batter wasn't a chip shop style batter, it looked like the batter you'd get on a Young's frozen battered cod fish fillet, that'd been cooked in the oven. Cheers Lee. 🍺
Hi MacMaster - you don't appear to be a tartar sauce kind of guy ?
Love the different destination vids, btw.
Whilst your over there in Ireland you should pop up to Belfast and try John Long’s chippy 😋👍 it has been there for a very long time. It even kept open whilst the troubles were going on around it
Mary Barry's in kilmore village, Co. Wexford.
You'll be blown away, and stay for a couple of days 👍🇮🇪👍🇮🇪
Totally with you on the curry sauce, Iike that with fish and chips
That was a quare bit of fish, the chips looked really good, decent size of chip and a good portion, compared to most of the Sassenach chippies you've taken us to. The colour of the peas was a concern and the curry sauce looked a bit watery. I gave it 9.2, on looks alone.
so nice to see the wool shops how much are they?
Magpie in Whitby is brilliant. I used to get the fish platter, get a variety of battered fish such as lemon sole, Skate, halibut etc.
He's barred from Whitby ha ha
Lol there will be a digital diversion sign for the Macmaster
Ohhhh I luv the Irish accent n I'll be gettn me some of that when I take a trip there I love my fish n chips. We have some alot of beautiful fish n chips here in New Zealand too maybe you should both come over n try some 🍻💚🤍🧡
can’t wait to see and taste the food, that and Irish whiskey, a pint of Guineas, and more fish n chips!
Well done guys
A cup of tea after fish & chips is the greatest thing 😋
You could lay bricks with those mushy peas 🤣🤣 8 out of 10
Had a fish butty 2 weeks ago at the PALMS in tenerife and it needed 2 breadcakes for the fish to fit inside. And a pint while you wait lol.. The best iv had and thats from a yorkshireman 😎😎😎
Have a pint in Murphys pub on Quay Street
The best pint of Guinness is in a small bar in charlestown ( 5 min drive from knock airport) called JJ finnans
Where you were standing at Spanish arch is where the fresh fish was sold in bygon days
Good one guy's looks there the chips look nice I like Irish curry sauce 8
Look’s a lovely part of Ireland 🇮🇪 to me. Love to pay it a visit maybe next year now. Fare score i suppose. Great blog guy’s anyway.
Come back to McDonaghs when all the tables are back inside .Great craic
It looked really good to me. I'll give a 9/10. 👍
Didnt like the look of the batter Lee.... Like you i thought it was like the frozen fillets that come battered from the supermarkets... Yes Findus... 😉👍👏🍻✌️
Macmaster, you need to try ‘Robs’ in Pensarn, North Wales 🏴… famous for it’s Fish and Chips.
i had fish and chips at Harry Ramsden in Hong Kong and it was excellent this was a few years ago it's now closed though
Ooohh mac! An Irish fish put upon yer dish, with a mushy peas like yer grandma's knees, eat it with hunger to be fed in the Irish creed, and then to bed because yerve been darn fed with a drink er thrice and it was all nice. ENJOY MAC , yer friend aswell. Xxxxx
Ireland is ace hope Dan finds you a decent breakfast cos the Irish way of cooking is delicious 🤤
Another enjoyable video, but why would you get people of Galway say get out-bugger off when you gave the food a decent score anyway??
Those peas had them before in Ireland-I like them a lot!
I'm very confused how Daniel hadn't even heard of the company Findus, I mean a few of my many of my friends never been to Ireland but know of a lot of Irish things due to TV, books, mags/papers, speaking with other people...etc
ONWARDS!
Excellent vlogg Lee, palms chippy wins by a mile. Nobody is battering than Lorraine. ONWARDS
You actually finished a whole plate of food for once.Well done.
Lol A chef when he tastes a dish never eats it all ot he'd be massive. 😝Although I was hungry that night. 😊👍🏼 Have a great weekend Mike. ❤️
McDonagh's fish-and-chips in Galway is the original business of the family that own the supermacs food chain . ⛓️
Galway looks a fabulous place xx
Greetings from Athy in kildare I love fish and chips 🍟
Don't know if that's how they do it over there but l thought the batter looked thick... much prefer bubbly and crispy with bits hanging off lol ... They would get a 7 off me .... that's still 1 higher than Whitby Lee .... apparently there are wanted posters in Whitby for The Macmaster 🤣
You gotta go t Limerick, seen ur in Ireland, and check out Donkey Fordes fish n chips 🍟, best in Ireland 🇮🇪 FACT !
It all looked dry for me and I agree as a Yorkshire lass the batter didnt look good .x
Fish was nice and thick but a little small. Batter was the casing type and had no bubbles in it. Curry sauce was thin and peas were thick. 6.5/10
Your fish & chips looked great, so did the mushy peas, but I would never have curry sauce. I love curry like you had in Bombay Babu in La Taheta but with fish & chips no way. When you are back in Tenerife you should try the Reef fish & chips on Golf del sur like I told you before, but you never replied to my comment, maybe you will this time!
I will do when I'm back. 👍🏼 👍🏼
Best Cod and chips in Ireland is in Johnstons chippy in Downings , Donegal
Experimental jabs for fish and chips. Yes please!
You haven’t been to Ireland till you have a pint of Guinness and the rain
Love fish and chips but I could never understand the fascination with mushy peas but to each, their own..
Chips looked great, fish looked fabulous but the batter didn't appeal .
Peas looked as I would expect and not bad value for a sit in 👍👍
If in Dublin I will bring you to Apriles chipper in South Richmond street .As good as it gets.
Galway 10 out of 10. Food was 8 - fish looked a bit like Birds Eye frozen version. I do not get use of mushy peas and curry sauce and do not get be started on over use of vinegar - still at leases you did not put gravy on the fish.
I have been going to Ireland for years, the wife is Irish. The peas always appear to be dry? Curry sauce , well take it or leave it. Fish and Chips in a tourist area are not top notch, much like Whitby , your there for the day etc . The fish its self is always good near the coast like you would expect, but the funny thing is the fish is not alway large? Its not rain Lee its holy water , well thats what I was told , being an atheist I dont get the benefit its just rain.
Superb
Was treemendous guys superb let’s go
😀😀Definitely not 28 there.🤣 Good video.
Brilliant! Got to say that's the best "let's go" you've done and think you should imitate that every time now haha. Food looked good but yh chips could of done with being abit more done. Great viewing as usual 👌 👍
Message from Whitby...Try The Fish Box in Whitby or Robin Hood's Bay. They won't disappoint
👍🏼👍🏼
Palms I wouldn't give a high score to, frying or battering everything except fish, potatoes or sausages is a big no no for me.
The curry sauce could be a little thicker for me but the Peas look fine. The Fish and Chips look good so I'll say a solid 8.5.
Ate you going to come down to Cornwall where the fish and chip shops offer everything from lemon sole to hake and monkfish?
Oh yes. 👍🏼👍🏼
@@TheMacMaster You could compare it all to Rick Stein’s chippy. Come all the way to the far west.
Chips are a wee bit pale for me and why do they have to serve up in such small plates, I like to move my food on the plate.
My late dad said put your vinegar on first and it dont wash the salt off
Add a bit of salt to mushy peas makes them more mushy not lying try it taste better
Fabulous place Galway..
You should go to Dublin Lee that's one he'll of a place
Great One Guys . Still Your On Wrong Side of The Country . Her in Doors Not Happy , Too Much On The Phone LOL . Keep Them Coming Pal LOL
Jackie Lennox's on the Bandon Rd in Cork is allegedly the best in Ireland.
Very good to be honest. Worth a visit.
@Chris H 100% its gonna be a cracker.
If you think McDonaghs is close to McDonalds there was actually a O'McDonalds in Bangor up in Northern Ireland in the late 90's. Was basically a chippy that sold burgers but they literally had some same arch logo and typeface as the real McDonalds, don't think they ever got sued but the owner stabbed his girlfriend to death so that was the end of that one.
To be fair the people in Galway will love it there because they are yet to try Yorkshire fish and chips then they will know how good they are
Hello, MacMaster You Can Lay Bricks With Those Mushy Peas 🤢Sorry Not Impressed with the
Fish & Chips 9:45 Not Worth €25 For Two Meals I will Score it a Solid 6.0😒👌
I Love North & South of Ireland and Its People ☘️😍☘️👍
If I’m totally honest the chips and fish looked a bit pale/undercooked, the peas looked too solid/dense and the curry sauce a bit watery. It’s a 6/10 from me.
Hi hun those fish and chips look nice. The fish is lovely and chunky and white chips looked OK not fussy on peas curry sauce looks OK . My score is 8.9 xx
What type of curry sauce was it? It wasn't a Dhansak by any chance?
Lol. 😂
Can't go to Galway without going to Supermacs Eyre Square. Quality after the pints
Lol. I did. Review coming soon.
I used to go to supermacs in tullamore all the time, bloody lovely
