Well, the problem is that an opera (even a masterpiece) can remain neglected for decades, and suddenly all the major opera houses program it at the same time. I can count the numbers of works involved in a more or less recent past : Rusalka, Les Huguenots, Der Zwerg, Die Gezeichneten, Die Tote Stadt, Die Vögel, Das Wunder der Heliane... Let's hope the next fades will involve Schmidt's Notre-Dame, Nicolai's Lustigen Weiber, Marchners' Vampyr, Weinberger's Schwanda Dudak (though this one could almost be included in the 1st list), Strauss' Liebe der Danae, Magnard's Guercoeur...
I studied this work in depth as an undergraduate 30 years ago and only got to see a performance, (and that, in a cinema, a relay from the MET in NY) a couple of years ago. One of the principal reasons I'd had to wait so long became evident as the performance unfolded: the title rôle is one of the most demanding in (or almost in) the repertoire. The performance was stunning. It is, indeed, a marvellous work which richly deserves to be better known. Keep preaching/defending. It's Cherubini's greatest work.
This finale is far much better than those 3 by Callas. The last sentence by Callas sounds without sense; "al altra riva io vo": which riva???: here the dialogue between Giasone and Medea provides a lot of sense! What a pity that Callas cut off this magnificent finale...
Alas I dont don't understand the excellent language Italian i have the libretto in front of me. My first introduction to Opera an LP with Callas I was welll versed in Greek mythology. I was 14.years old in Santa Barbara California
Interesting perspective … Sondra has never let us down, so far, with her dramatic coloratura rep! Never seen an audience go so consistently wild for anyone ( tearing up programs as of old ) like they do for her ! We shall see soon
