Martinelli's hesitance to take defenders on is baffling on many fronts. He has the speed, he has done it before and has been good at it in the past. What's even more puzzling is that this hesitancy has been manifesting for quite a while now. So why is Arteta not seeing it?! The fact that MA seems OK with this ' new Martinelli ' gives me the vibes that he's playing under strict instructions to conserve energy for his defensive duties. This is the only thing that makes sense to me right now.
I don't think it's necessarily about 'conserving energy for his defensive duties', but more about not taking risks. Recycling the ball for fear of losing it if he takes on his man, etc. It is a balance, risk-reward and right now, we're playing too safe IMO. We've gone within ourselves and missing that confidence to risk, "to play". I think, in part, because the results, sending-offs, etc., this season have made them a bit risk-averse/cautious. This needs to be addressed asap. As it was after the short winter break last Jan. For me they need to just start playing with a bit more freedom, less fear.
I’ve been thinking about what Henry said and, while I agree with everything he said on the surface, I think it’s much deeper than that. I believe there’s a lot he didn’t say out of respect and reverence for the club. What I have realised is that Arteta has all the confidence in the world in Saka and Ødegaard to make the right decision, but he doesn’t have that confidence in Martinelli. As a result, he is okay with the former two taking risks in possession but not Martinelli. To an extent, even Trossard takes risks; it’s just less evident because he doesn’t have the blistering pace to get away with it or make the defensive recovery. But he often tries to shake off his marker, or make difficult passes in an attempt to create something. Martinelli does neither and, in fact, doesn’t do much of anything. He just runs himself into a blockade and either comes back to look for support, or tries and fails to run past someone that has a better angle than he does. I believe Arteta keeps playing him BECAUSE of the over reliance on the right hand side. Once Arsenal get all the traffic on the right, defenders will naturally focus their attention - and inevitably drift physically - to the right. That means less attention is paid to the left. So when there’s a switch of play, or a cross/square ball to the left, Martinelli is there to pass it into the net. The issue is that Martinelli, himself, is too often caught ball watching to keep himself onside or get into the right position at the right time. And Havertz is often never in the right position for a tap in. So it’s not that we don’t create chances from open play, but that the final third decision-making and execution from our LW, and occasionally our CF, are severely lacking
TH14 talking straight facts, Haven't seen any backlash towards Titi. I always feel this has been Martinelli's downfall, compare him to Saka on the right and there's a clear difference. Id love this to be the kick up the arse Martinelli needs and he grows from this and takes it as not a critique but as constructive criticism.
I'm very disappointed in Odegaards finishing, but the whole team needs to do better; I am however confident that we will be in a title race, Liverpool and Chelsea will run out of steam at some point and we have to take advantage
Good morning Tom and everyone, time to put the recriminations from Saturday behind us and focus on being better v Palace times x2… it won’t be easy as they will try and low block us no doubt ! COYG
I think we have a serious problem on the left seeing as both of our left sided forwards play at their best as substitutes late in the game. There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with being a super sub but then we need a starter who is comfortable being an actual starter. That’s what the convo should be about.
My son is a foot baller and feels that One of the reasons that Odegaard cannot shoot is because his ball control is too close to his body . To take a good shot there has to be some distance between himself and the ball .
I understand what he’s saying from a technique perspective, but some of the greatest PL players of all time didn’t need a clear run up to the ball to get a clean strike. What Ødegaard lacks is conviction and decisiveness in his finish. He often hesitates because he’s looking for a clear sight of goal before he strikes. Other times, he’s aware he’s waited too long and forces a shot anyway when he was better off accepting the chance was gone. That’s part of the risk aversion that Arteta has coached into the side because he’s traumatised by City chasing us down and beating us to the title twice in a row. He talks about bravery, but is still so terrified of losing the ball or conceding a goal. He needs to breathe and let the players, themselves, breathe.
Josh Kronke said that sales are needed to buy a Marquee signing and despite making almost 90 million pounds they betrayed us and lied to us in the end Tom, thats what happened in the summer and to top it off they even bragged about it "Arsenal fans should be Proud, we had a Great window" 😂
I disagree that he's not getting doubled; our opponents almost always cheat a midfielder over to help high, with the RFB going low. Even then, he occasionally attacks on the RFB's left side to cross or shoot with his weaker left foot.
Saying Martinelli did not create and that is the end of story is simplistic. If Arteta is constantly emphasizing you cannot turn the ball over, and he punishes players for losing balls on take on's you remove the impetus of players to take on opponents.
Do you think it's down to our style of play why these past 2 seasons as to why Martinelli and Jesus have fell off? The season they did well was when we were more attacking, and since then, we have gone ALOT more pragmatic and defensive. They both expressed (if that's the right word) themselves and now seem to be a shell of a player and robotic. Do you think if we sold Martinelli to Liverpool, he would flop because I don't, I genuinely believe it is to do with the way we play.
Is it possible that control is not the mantra for 90mins of the game . Pep and Mancity is showing us that in periods of game state you need to be unshackled . Spurs and Arsenal are two sides of that coin ….. They are all gung-ho and no control , and we are are control and zero gung-ho .
Tom , have we completely lost our counter attacking game ? When in possession soon after a second ball , our transition is so slow , and our players are almost waiting for the opposition to regroup and run up to defend . I’m mystified !
martinelli needs consistent support like saka, xhaka was always fit and helped attack and defending with martinelli. merino is starting to do some supporting
@@bennymotalem340 i will once the leftside is sorted ... well once he beats his man what then with support theres options to pass or take players away from other areas
Saka doesn’t get consistent support, mind you. He just almost always makes the right decision. Saka beats his man more times a half than Martinelli does in 3 games. It’s about courage and decisiveness. Saka thrives in every environment, but Martinelli needs the perfect environment for 90 minutes to produce. We constantly slag off Foden for this same thing and it’s embarrassing
@@nomnsookeke4882 saka has had white and ode around him for 2 years + . The best martinelli had was xhaka and a bit of KT, but also the ball goes down the right-side more then the left
I want to see changes. Jesus on left, Trossard up top, & Sterling for Saka. Strong midfield & defense & bring on Starboy & others at 60 if needed. 💪🦵⚽️😁🔥
I still reckon Jesus could smash in a few goals end of the season Omar mamoush may be one to go for in January martinelli just needs a time out to get his head straight
Raheem needs to start instead of Martinelli. Let defenders do their job. Defending ability shouldn’t be the reason to play a winger. Arteta is too rigid. Sterling is a better player on that left wing.
Man's here doing the fire fighting because we had 3 not so good results (while still being the 3rd best team in both competitions) 🤣 This fanbase is beyond cure.
Merino isn’t top level on the ball, too slow and heavy footed, we need a sharper between the lines type of player and you see his first touch, it’s like a trampoline
Many fellow fans rinsed me two seasons ago when I said that Arteta is not a mature manager and he may lose us the league title in the way he selects his team on the day, does not engage his whole squad, rotate, substitute, and make timely adjustments. We were 8 points ahead at the time. Other fans said I was the dumbest Arsenal fan ever - and then Man City won the league. Last season, Man City lost the league again. This season other fans are noticing Arteta's weakness. This season, some fans are blaming players and calling for squad additions. I am telling you again that it doesn't matter who Arteta gets. He will misuse the player. I am also saying that Martinelli is 1v1 a lot and that there is a problem as there is often no one there for him cross to. Havertz doesn't move like a center-forward when wingers break forward. He pulls away to areas where he cannot receive the ball, or he is often still in the midfield somewhere. Saka is equally to blame because he waits for the double team too often when he doesn't need to. This too isn't entirely his fault as Odegaard and Havertz never breaks forward with him quickly or close enough get behind the defense. They play it too safe as a team. It's down to Arteta's coaching. And finally, the left hand stopped working properly when Arteta sidelined Tierney. And then it stopped working completely when Xhaka left. Rice is not a left-side No8. Merino is, but he time to get into a rhythm. Plus he isn't playing with an overlapping and defensive left-back. In fact, Arsenal doesn't play with a left-back at all. Arteta plays with right-backs, centerbacks, and midfielders at left-back. And he also plays without center-forwards. Cannot win trophies at this level without specialists in their proper positions, and without utilizing and engaging the whole squad. Regardless of who is on the bench, Arteta under-uses them and relies too heavily on his favorites. Hence, the bench is never game-ready, the starters are exhausted, and all are susceptible to injury. It's the manager, not the squad. Thiery Henry has to remain politically correct and advise players on how to improve without causing mutiny in the dressing room and among the fan base. We need a new manager. Thanks to Arteta, but he has brought the team as far as his current experience can. Arsenal needs a seasoned manager to get through the fine moments that are costing us points.
Sake and Martinelli are two different players! One is always thinking ahead long before he receives the ball. Whiles the other player starts thinking when he gets the ball. That’s why Saka ends product is a lot better! Odegaard can’t consistently play with Martinelli because he’s just not good enough to understand in game management!
