Thank you for the excellent video. I purchased the same gas struts (Apexstone 10" 100N) as you and followed customer service's advice to install them more vertically. They really work fantastically.
I am a Veteran as well and .ale these exact same shelves. Ive been having the issue of them opening TOO fast and hard with a loaded firearm and magazines in them. I. Planning to add the struts to slow them down, but still want some speed. Does this just soften to opening. And do you still need the chains? Lastly how are you attaching your chains, just a small screw and jack chain into wood or do you have a better setup. The opening speed and sudden jarring the chain will inevitably pull out with heavier items

Is the direction of the strut important? I was told the big cylinder must be at the bottom but I m not convinced..
