Once all 4 tyres lose grip, your problems begin. No axle or hub lock will make any difference, which is why true offroad vehicles have a winch. The best car I have ever driven in mud or snow is a Jeep TJ. It is primitive in comparison, but the suspension lift and giant offroad tyres make the difference. Furthermore, the are penalties to pay for that in terms of normal road driving. I can add that I owned a G Wagen, which was excellent, yet it would struggle on even slight icy downslopes due to its immense weight. A Ford Fiesta would glide straight through, while I would be reaching for a fresh pair of underpants when I arrived at my destination.
@@SuperFlixz Haha, thanks mate! I've had a XC90 for around 18 months, 2 years now. It's a daily driver, plus carting my fishing gear to various destinations. In my usage case, compared to the G Wagen - no difference. It will drive across a muddy field just the same. It's not complained so far, it just does it. What IS different is the height - the G Wagen is too tall to go into many parking lots, and, more importantly for me, the XC90 fits under the height barrier at my fishing club match lakes. I will say again, after owning the XC90 for a while, which is more of a car than a 4x4 (and better suited to most drivers) the Jeep is still king in my opinion. I did unbelievable manoeuvres in mine, things a G Wagen couldn't even imagine doing. If G Wagen owners thing they are superior, the footwells of my G Wagen would fill up with water just the same as the Jeep, but the Jeep had a plug you could pull to drain the water out. I had brilliant times in both the Jeep and the G, though. The G Wagen carted my family, bikes, camping gear and God knows what else all around England and France, so no complaints.
