Another great video Joe, thanks. Even though Joe Walsh asked for the higher powered Ghia, it was a favorite on stage amp for Walter Becker may he Rest In Peace .

Doc! I just found a rare bird in the wild. A ‘97 Ghia with the power cable hardwired in, and a single unlabeled speaker Jack. Snagged it yesterday. Can’t wait for it to get here!

i own a Mazerati V2 head. I sent it in to Don at Dr Z and he installed theo PPIMV and a Cut control. I own four Dr. Z amps,: Carmen Ghia, Z28 mkii , Maz 38 mkii and the Mazerati..and this one is absolutely my favorite. It has everything! Tons of clean, headroom and tremendous punch and crunch. Gorgeous tone. I'm so glad I found it! It's loud AF as well.

I agree with your comment at the end Joe. It definitelly sounds "British" (whatever that means) BUT, like you, i hear a distinctive Hiwatt character. I'm curious to hear it with Fane speakers, i think they'll be better for this amp than the Vintage 30.
On a separate note: The real surprise in this video was the Spaceman phaser. It was quiet shocking seeing you playing a "modern design" circuit.

Cool on the FANES.....I may be close to pulling the trigger on a Nova, if I don't get a Matchless Clubman....and would like to put a Rawson Sparfield 70w Yorkshire Purple Fane-clone in.

Not forgetting the Brad Paisley link. It was the first Z amp he played and gigged from Z. It was after Mike seeing Paisley at a gig and unexpectedly seeing his amp on stayed that they then connected to work together.
Brad said at the time it was the only amp he played out of many that could give him what his original 60s Vox did, which he was looking to retire.
I will also ad I played the 35th anniversary Ghia at Peach Guitar at the beginning of August and it's live in my memory rent free. I didn't pick it up, I went for the Z-28Mkii but the 35th Ghia had something special going on.

Interested in either this or a zmaster
What would be your preferred choice between the two ?
    Thx!

Extra knobs suck tone. same for pedals. Had a CG for a few years, but preferred my Swart Pro and Morgan AC40 custom. Im doing final assembly on a Bass I made my son this summer and the tone was suddenly boxy and you had the boss plugged in. Amp sounds great and I learned something today lol. I also love 30 Watt amps. The tweed Bandmaster is a favorite, but I have a Tungsten Buckwheat and its fantastic.

Excessive tone circuit settings sure can introduce phase shift and complicate mixing. In a recording session moving or swapping microphones can be better than twiddling a knob. Most pedals, IMHO, are supposed to modify tone.

Fun video. Enjoyed the variety of guitars. We live in an era of a great selection of amps. I really like the way you highlight the speaker since in many cases it has more impact than the amp itself.

While looking for a Ghia, I've found myself in a situation where I can buy a Mazerati head. For someone with dark tone in the fingers, who likes a plexi and the Z-Wreck Jr, do you think this amp has enough mids without too much low end for humbuckers?

    • @JoePerkinsMusic
      @JoePerkinsMusic  14 дней назад +1

Definitely! This amp is all about the mids, to me - and the tone control essentially sweeps through the midrange (a little like a cocked wah, but not as filtered sounding) so you can fine tune the mids just using that one knob :-)

Thanks, Joe. I'll bet that the Fane speaker frequency response would appeal better to my ear. This demo had a bit of nasal tone regardless of tone setting. I always trust your consistently high quality recording technique Have a splendid day!

Longtime Carmen Ghia owner (almost 15yr). Great demo of its long forgotten big brother. Super interesting comment about the amp sounding like a Hiwatt. On the forums, I've heard the Ghia described as everything from early Marshall to Vox to Tweed Fender but Hiwatt makes a lot of sense. To me Hiwatts straddle the line between tweed and early Marshall and so does the Ghia. My favorite speakers for the Ghia have been the Celestion Blue (really better off with a Gold for power handling as I destroyed 2 with the Ghia) and the Mojotone 50W Anthem, which is an amazing speaker for $85 USD. Need to try a Fane!

@@cchavez248 Transformer saturation certainly contributes to a amp's sound. Perky demonstrated that well recently with that Silicon Steel pedal. Materials certainly matter but I wonder if a smaller transformer saturates more easily.
