Another great video. As a fellow Engineer I clearly hear the passion and training come through in the quality of instruction and detail. Some of, if not the best explanations on amplifiers anywhere! Thank you Sir! The Z-Best sounded spectacular!
Choosing by db efficiency for home or stage environment is new to me never heard speaker choice discussed this way. Thanks for opening my ears this way!
Great video....... On my fender vibrolux reverb I used Emenince Lil Buddy 10 inch speakers. I had read they run a little darker tone but Fenders are so bright of an amp that they went very well with it. They seem to tame that edge of brightness....
I used the LB on a SFSuper Reverb for brightness control. The C Rex can smooth the highs out in a similar way. I imagine Eminence speakers can work great on Z amps.
Great video, Dr. Z! For those wondering how big a difference speaker efficiency can have, I swapped one of my AC30TB/6's greenbacks for a AlNiCo blue years ago. Since then I've regularly heard comments from sound guys that my amp is significantly louder than other players with two greenbacks in their AC30's of the same production years.
I bought a used SRZ 2 years ago and a used Z Best 2x12. I fought with with the sound of the amp for quite a while because there was just something missing to my ears, I actually almost sold it. I decided to start messing with different speaker combinations and finally settled on a Vintage 30 in the bottom and a Creamback M65 on top. Man did that change the sound to what I was looking for, it completely changed my mind and I a absolutely love how it sounds now. Speakers really do make a difference.
Thanks for sharing this, I have a Maz 18 with a 30th Anniversary and this was helpful in getting a sense of what a speaker swap would do to the sound of my amp.
I absolutely love your AMA series. Very informative, love your amps. Still wanna a video similar to the EMS history and inspiration video on the EZG- 50 amp. A very underrated amp.
Bloody good to have you back Dr Z. Unfortunately I had to sell my Z recently but that's put me in the market for another, hopefully a another MAZ 18 or a Z Plus.
Doc, thanks for all you do. Not only do you design and build great amps, your customer support is the best in the business and you share your knowledge with the world. Much respect!
I put a Weber Thames ceramic 12 in my buddy’s Maz-38 NR and he loves it even after 15 years of runtime. He’s a country picker with a Tele just for reference.
Messing around with different cabinets, my two favorite speakers for the Maz 18 are the Celestion Heritage Greenback and the G12-35XC. So, it seems like the Celestions with the imitations of the Pulsonic Cones.
I have an SRZ 65 that I run into an Orange 2x12 cab loaded with one Celestion Vintage 30 and one Celestion Alnico Cream sounds amazing! Loud as a fucking freight train!
Im usually pretty good at hearing an amp and knowing what i will like in it but im okd n cannot see or drive so it took me a long time M brainstorming on what i want in a 4×10 to go with my britishy head.
Awesome video doc. Would love to hear your thoughts on using the same speaker but at different ohms, 16, 8 and 4 not mismatched that is. What’s happening in the amp and how it impacts the tone.
@@DrZAmplification What difference in tone..breakup, etc. Could I expect from a Celestion Blue vs the Gold that I have in my Maz 18 Reverb combo MK II ? Thanks so much. And thanks for making such incredible amps. Chuck
@@charlesrawlinson429 the blue will be more mid foward than the gold. if you are playing at low volume, you won't really be hearding any speaker breakup in the equation

Gonna need a backup head at some point. Would love a Z wreck jr. Also, wish you had a Z Plus NR head, would most likely snatch one up as well. Thanks for these great videos!
Hi great speaker demo being from the USA have you used Naylor speakers? I'm from the UK and there quite rare over here. I have a pair in a hand wired ,turret board Dan Torres amp I managed to buy used some time ago. There 8 0hm 25 watt I really like them, to me they sound like a green back. Love to hear your opinion on them cheers Martyn.
HI. I have a Remedy head with Master Volume. I have a 2x12 cabinet with with 2 Celestion Greenbacks speakers. I would like to change just one speaker but I don't know which one pairs perfectly with my Greenback to have a balanced sound suitable for the model of my Remedy head. My genre goes from Rock to Heavy Rock. Which one would you recommend? Thanks alot
Absolutely love how you speak and explain things. It also says something about your mind and how intelligent you obviously are. 😊 Great video. I just bought a z-28 1/10” combo. Looking at speakers for it. Leaning towards the G10 greenback.
I love my Z amps, been using them pretty much exclusively for the last 15 years. I love experimenting with speakers, but I will say, the special sauce speakers Doc uses for amps like the Z Master are on point. Would love to see more specialty speakers down the line! BTW, what is that top loaded red amp?!?!?! Is that my Z28 MKII??? 🙂;-)
With the Maz 18 mkii master volume is pushing the amp more in an at home situation that important? Just ordered one and I’m torn between the h30 and greenback. Greenback could win if the sensitivity makes it better for home use.
I believe at lower volumes this won't be much of a consideration, I would suggest just going with whatever speaker you can think sounds better to your ears.
@@DrZAmplification thank you! Spent the last couple days digging up every speaker comparison I could find for this amp and it seems like the H30 was the best all around choice. Sounds amazing. Looking forward to getting the amp in hand next week.

Too long didn’t read. You get what you pay for when it comes to speakers. They genuinely make incredible types of plastics and resins that don’t lose frequency and are molecularly dense enough to resonate cleanly, but you do have to pay for it. You can’t expect much out of a $100 speaker. Put some $400 speakers in your car, power them well and you’ll be jaw dropped at how worth every penny is…

Hey Doc! Kinda get mixed reviews on this issue regarding certain tube amps but do recommend using the standby switch on the Maz 18?
you don't have to. it's tube rectified, high voltage won't hit the tubes till the rectifier is conducting.
