That's pretty much how I would have done it. But I wasn't aware the color ramp at 16:40 could be used to randomize the color like that. I learned something.....
Wow. Great tutorial it gives a great result. When you showed your final render, I couldn't believe that's what we made. Of course, you've added a few different things like the HDR and added depth of feild
I like how the technology becomes easier, now you could just download a 3D scanned model of a dirt in Quixel Bridge and then put it together after that boom! Realistic render
Hi i always watch this section of the cannel, and i have a request for you. Can you make a video explainig how to use all texture maps? like how to use normal, bump, roughness, and others maps efficiently in a textured material? Pls! that would help beginners like me alot!
I'm trying to create a scene where I dig with a garden trowel in a garden just digging up small amounts of dirt the trowel goes into the dirt and causes small holes just like a gardener does. Using your method Sir do you know how I could create this animation
I think it will look different if you had used object for the displacement and then use an empty. PS the roughness should be much higher, they are way to reflective. Dirt, rock, stone tend to have very high value pretty much dull like appearance
@@RomboutVersluijs To respond to all of your questions. Yeah, they did all look the same. A good fix is to make a few dirt particles in the 2nd render layer, then use the group rendering instead of object. When rendering dirt from a far, it's a good idea to use high roughness values, but as you get closer to the dirt and microfacets become closer and less significant, it's a good idea to use higher roughness. Ultimately, it's up to the eye of the artist though. And yeah, final result was mine. Just threw some basic color grading and depth of field on there.
Sorry you say 2 times roughness high?!?! I know dirt and dirt has a really high roughness, its dull. I come from a different render engine. Your roughness was very low and still glossy, they you add structure to it in the form of a normal map. Though that "fixes" the look, its still kind of reflective because of that low roughness setting you used ;) I tried the empty and its same as the global. Doesnt work neither. The particle dont use it, perhaps when there are animated it would but with static ones the initial are all the same. Indeed the group is the only solution, sadly i can use that with my render engine.
@@RomboutVersluijs you can duplicate objects 3-4 times and since the displace is set to global u can just duplicate and move the object and it will automatically change the displacement of the object texture and just group them and use group instead of object in the particle ..
Thanks for this tutorial, it really seems to be what I was looking for to bring more life to my grounds.. Only question though (and yes I am a beginner) I was with you all the way until you got to the whole render layer thing. Plus, I am working on latest Blender 2.93 version and not only I don't understand the render layer stuff but on top of it, it is not even presented the same way in older versions and latest ones. Would you kindly give me a tip to understand that part ? Cause I am stuck at the moment where I think I did right for "render layer" (I actually messed with "view layer on top right corner of the screen, since I couldn't find anything called render layer like you mentionned) but then trying to get back on another view layer, these Dirtparticle aren't appearing hovering the ground like you, it's just that one dirt particle I was building like you were showing which stayed at the same spot even if I changed the view layer (again, I think I did). Any help ?
WOW. Just plain WOW. Beautiful job, very detailed but straight to the point. You just made my day - and my render! Thank you for your hard work and a great tutorial! :)
There are some false information here. Object info node as far as I know does not change every particle, they would be all the same color of the one original object. Displace with global cordenate is the same thing. Object particles (again, as far as I know) are all clones of the real thing. A solution would be copying and grouping the original object and use group particles instead of object. If I'm wrong let me know.
I think you are correct regarding the use of the global coordinates in the displace - all the particles are the same shape, albeit with different sizes/orientations.
Hey Grant, thank you for doing the tutorial. If I have a car driving over the dirt, how would I get them to simulate realistically? Set the tires and dirt as Rigid Bodies?
I know this is a bit late (and im not Grant), but you could use dynamic paint, set a plane as the canvas>set surface type to displace and set your tires as the brush, and then animate the tires going over the canvas.
I'm sure there might be a way to change colors in the particle or hair node. Is there a size value output? Cause object info node does not do the trick.
Shadow isn't being cast on the particles (the particles themseles do cast shadows, they just don't recieve it), doean't anyone know what could be the problem?
I'm not seeing the point of using "global" for the displacement coordinates, just because I'd expect it would make each particle slightly different shape, but it doesn't seem to work that way... I kinda hope there's an easy way to do this in 2.9x, I'm just trying to look for inspiration, not a specific tutorial.
Modern Blender user here for 3.1. Where are the render layers? He clicked on a random box at the bottom. Unfortunately, I see nothing resembling that. :/
I thought this was gonna tell us how to make dirt for close up destruction simulations :( Was still a great tutorial tho, maybe it’ll help with the September contest.
Why do you have a pop filter when you LITERALLY never speak into the microphone, I've watch 10 of your videos and you do not speak into the mic, so no pops will ever happen!
Not looking for drawn out explain. But with the new tools in 2.8 would you go about this completely different. In regards to a better or faster render. Or just tweak some steps, or not change a thing. Im very noob, but some of the upcoming features i could see u using. Maybe?
Right clicking no longer works in my blender. I've used blender for almost 10 years so I know about all the regular settings to fix this. None of them work. Any ideas?
I found the cause of my problem. Out of date and/or conflicting addons. Once I uninstalled all the addons I had added to blender one by one my hotkeys began to work again. Hope this helps someone in the future having this same issue.
13:40 "Adding more variation is a great way to add more variety" I had no idea.

Using the random output from the object info node does assign random colors to the particles. You can see the effect in the final render.
I think you are correct regarding the use of the global coordinates in the displace - all the particles are the same shape, albeit with different sizes/orientations.
It does randomize the color even if the objects are particles and the material was applied to a single object..
I wish I could give this 1000 likes. I learned so much. Great job explaining.
Omg but.. I love you, some hours to search a serious tutorial ! It was just here. Thanks
Any chance you'll make a video about pearlescent/iridescent materials?
Check out Ducky3D, he's already made a super simple iridescent material
That last words "I don't know about you", well me too I don't know what happened here.
checking in from 2021...GEOMETRY NODES!!!
How to scoop up dirt in blender??
great, tnks
yooooooo, VERY NICE TUTORIAL BROOOO, Thank Youuu!. :)))))
If file is greater than 50MB then blender give error or we have to take care any other things ?

There's also the "particle info" node which is very useful too.
"darkish orangish red"... do you mean brown?
where have textured coordinates gone in blender 2.8. 6 minutes 51 seconds in. This would be really useful to me if i could find it.
My particles are glossy and shine, What type of lighting are you using, plus where you put the camera since you deleted it at the start?
the real deal! thanks
thanks a lot for this but i had a problem after rendering the groundplane still seems muddy..can anyone help is much appreciated
I wonder if it's possible to ad a color ramp to individual dirt particles ,
Cause in real life , no dirt particle has only one colour
Shadow isn't being cast on the particles (the particles themseles do cast shadows, they just don't recieve it), doean't anyone know what could be the problem?
That was pretty cool. How would that be exporting to a game engine or would you recommend applying those principles in the engine itself?
Way too much geometry for a game, I'd stick to normal maps and textures for realtime.
