Really amazing movie and unfortunately very underrated, it deserved to have had a great highlight! With a very original theme and script, with great visual and sound effects! It is one of those productions that by some unknown phenomenon end up being deeply wronged!
It makes me wonder why the Odyssey Spacecraft was not armed? Surely going on a mission of such potential danger, you would have thought they would have considered having at least a few conventional HE (High Explosive) and nuclear missiles? Even on the movie The Black Hole, Captain Holland upon approaching the Cygnus, he goes "Locking warheads into firing position". This seemed a huge oversight and would have potentially saved Earth completely had they been able to possibly launch a thermonuclear warhead. I think any manned spacecraft despite nearly zero chances of contact should have a defense of some kind.
